Traveling to Tamarack Resort in Idaho:

A happy woman enjoying the snow

Getting to Tamarack Resort in Idaho from anywhere in the United States or in the world requires a flight into the capital, Boise. I took an affordable flight from Newark Airport in New Jersey to Boise Airport with a short layover at Chicago O’Hare.

From Boise Airport, I rented a car and drove two and a half hours north to Tamarack. Overall, it is an easy drive from Boise Airport to Tamarack Resort. I definitely recommend checking the weather before you make that drive because it will determine which type of vehicle you rent.

If snow is expected in the forecast, definitely rent a vehicle with all-wheel-drive or an SUV because you will be making your way through mountain roads that are narrow and windy.

If you are traveling within Idaho or are doing a road trip, Tamarack is super easy to get to with your own vehicle! (This is a great destination if you want to add onto your Montana, Wyoming and Colorado road trip or your Northern California and Oregon road trip!)

Staying at The Lodge at Osprey Meadows:

During my three nights at Tamarack Resort in Idaho, I stayed at the Lodge at Osprey Meadows, which is located on the property, just steps away from the slopes.

(Looks like I have to return to Tamarack, Idaho during the summertime!)

Tamarack Resort views during sunrise

One of the best memories I had during my winter trip to Tamarack ski resort in Idaho was waking up early to watch the sun rise over the mountains in front of the lodge’s massive fire pit that easily turns on with a simple push of a button.

A woman sitting in front of a fire at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

Afterwards, I made my way to the hot tub since no one was in there that early in the morning. It was heavenly watching the sun rise over the beautiful Idaho mountains!

A woman in a hot tub watching during sunrise at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

Idaho is on Mountain Standard Time, but during the winter, the sun doesn’t rise until closer to 8am, so it definitely isn’t difficult at all to wake up early to watch the sunrise from the resort’s scenic patio, fire pit, hot tub, snowshoe or Nordic ski trails. I’m so happy about that because seeing a sunrise at Tamarack is absolutely special!

Tamarack Resort in Idaho during sunrise

Another fun winter excursion that I did during my time at Tamarack Resort in Idaho was snowshoeing for the very first time! Located all throughout Tamarack are beautiful trails for you to enjoy whether you choose to go snowshoeing or Nordic Skiing.

A woman snowshoeing at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

For me, there is nothing more refreshing than that crisp and fresh winter air. What is great about snowshoeing at the resort is that you can discover stillness within the rolling Idaho hills, meadows, alpine/aspen/evergreen trees as well as within the Tamarack groves.

The beautiful property at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

A snowshoeing adventure at Tamarack may also allow you to cross paths with beautiful wildlife! It’s an amazing way to connect with nature without venturing too far from the resort. Overall, my experience snowshoeing for the first time was a lot of fun, but it was definitely a workout!

A sunrise in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho

Tamarack has a golf course that can be enjoyed during the warmer months and a lot of the snowshoe and Nordic trails go through there and you could also head into the woods and up into the mountain if you are looking for more of a challenge. There are so many great options for different skill levels.

You could also go fat tire biking at Tamarack! There are also snowmobiling options not too far from the resort.

Skiing at Tamarack Resort:

A woman skiing at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

Since the main focus of my winter trip to Tamarack Resort in Idaho was to ski, I could not wait to hit the slopes! (It was my first time skiing the Rocky Mountains, which is what the Idaho mountains are part of in the American West.)

One of the BEST feelings EVER is when you first get on that ski lift. The air is fresh, it gives you the opportunity to watch all of the other skiers and snowboarders make their way down the mountain and you are filled with excitement.

The ski slopes at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

Overall, I had an enjoyable time skiing at Tamarack and found the trails to be freshly machine groomed and I barely saw any ice.

That is huge for me when I go skiing! (Unfortunately, a lot of the slopes that I usually ski on the East Coast get very icy, which gets a bit scary and dangerous, especially on the blue and black trails. The terrain was amazing at Tamarack ski resort and I felt safe at all times.)

The mountain Idaho ski mountains

At Tamarack Resort in Idaho, there is a 7,700-summit elevation; 4,900 base elevation; a 2,800-vertical drop; 50 runs; 17% beginner terrain; 45% intermediate terrain (which is what my ski level is) and 38% advanced terrain.

There are also a variety of terrain parks for those who want to try some cool tricks and there is also backcountry skiing for experts. If you choose to go backcountry skiing, please note that you are doing so at your own risk. Click here for a trail map!

The views skiing at Tamarack in Idaho

During my time skiing at Tamarack Resort, since it was my first-time skiing for the year, I mainly stuck to the blue and green trails, which are the intermediate (blue) and beginner (green) trails.

Once I warmed up and got my confidence back, I was excited to have made it down one of the black trails! When I used to ski a lot more during my teens and earlier 20s, I would ski a lot of black diamond trails. I am hoping to create more time in my schedule to ski more often during the winter so that I could get my skills back.

Skiing at Tamarack

What is great about Tamarack Resort in Idaho is that it is also the perfect mountain to learn how to ski or to improve your skills! The Winter Sports School offers lessons for new students of all ages to learn basic maneuvers and for the intermediate to advanced level rider looking to further hone their skills and progress to become the best they can be.

You can either sign up for an Itty Bitty Private Lesson, a 2-hour lesson, 3-hour lesson, 6-hour lesson or a backcountry experience.

Gateway to Tamarack is the ski resort’s partnership with Gateway Parks and Play it Again Sports, which is designed for people ages 13 and older who are new to skiing and snowboarding.

Tamarack Resort also has Trailblazers, which is a multi-week program for children between the ages of 4-12 who have previous ski experience and can confidently ski the green terrain. In this program, children will be coached by Tamarack’s certified and experienced instructors in a team-based environment.

The Backcountry Experience offers a mix of classroom and on-snow training for intermediate skiers and snowboarders wanting to learn about snow safety and off-resort skiing. This one-day class focuses on snow science, backcountry skiing skills, tactics as well as snow safety, introduction to beacon use and exploration of some of the best in-bound powder stashes Tamarack has to offer.

Tamarack also offers mountain bike lessons and watersport lessons during the summer months for visitors.

In addition to all of the above, Tamarack Resort also offers tuning services for your ski and snowboard gear and they also have great rentals!

Since I had to fly to Idaho to go skiing, I obviously didn’t want to haul all of my equipment onto the plane (plus my personal ski gear is very old at this point and I need to get new and updated equipment), so I rented everything.

It was really easy for me to get rental skis, boots, a helmet and ski poles for my size and ski level at the Tamarack Sports Center. Please note that you must make your rental reservations 48 hours in advance!

Dining at The Village:

Tiramisu donust from The Reserve at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

Located at Tamarack Resort in Idaho is The Village, which offers luxury living, dining, and shopping.

During my time at Tamarack in February 2021, part of The Village was still under construction, but let me tell you, it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I loved the architecture, dining options and how close it was to the ski slopes and lifts.

A beer after skiing

Located at The Village is The Village Market, which is a convenient store where you can purchase necessities, toiletries, snacks and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). It is always nice to have a convenient store on the property since the drive to the nearest town, Donnelly, is around 15 to 20-minutes from the resort.

My favorite restaurant at Tamarack Resort was The Reserve, which is a Mediterranean-inspired fine dining restaurant with a bar. I ate at The Reserve for dinner during each of the three nights I was at Tamarack and it did not disappoint.

Idaho Trout from The Reserve at Tamarack

During my first night, I savored the Idaho Trout, which also came with grilled seasonal veggies and rice polenta. It was absolutely amazing and probably the best trout dinner I’ve ever had! On that same night, since I was starving, I also had the tiramisu donuts, which were fire (pictured at the start of this section)!

An Italian linguine and shrimp dinner

My second night eating dinner at The Reserve had me savoring the linguini and shrimp dinner that came with Oregon pink shrimp, roasted peppers, shiitake mushrooms and saffron broth. It was absolutely delicious!

An Italian chicken sandwich

I was craving French fries on my third night at The Reserve, so I got the Italian chicken sandwich that featured grilled marinated chicken breast, pancetta, marinated roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella on a ciabatta bun with fries on the side. It was so good and definitely suited my taste buds!

French toast from Triple B Diner at Tamarack Resort in Idaho

In addition to The Reserve, The Village had a lot of other great eateries to enjoy off the slopes. On my first morning at Tamarack, I got breakfast at Triple B Diner where I savored the French toast that included cinnamon and sugar French toast, granola nut crunch and maple syrup. It was amazing!

A coffee shop at Tamarack ski Resort

During the other two mornings, I enjoyed heartwarming coffee with a chocolate muffin as well as a ham and egg breakfast sandwich on a croissant at the charming Clearwater Coffee Co.

An apres ski craft beer

At the Plaza walkway, located within The Village at Tamarack, is the Rendezvous Food Hall, which is an indoor open venue that features an eclectic mix of eateries such as Crusty’s Pizza, Summit Bowls (for noodle lovers), El Pueblo Taqueria and more. A biergarten will also be opening at Tamarack Resort for après ski fun (after ski parties)! There is also a food truck called Mountain Bites that features Asian fusion eats.

Tamarack Resort in Idaho also provides for a great mountain wedding venue! Click here to learn more about hosting a wedding at Tamarack.

Afterwards, I made my way to the hot tub since no one was in there that early in the morning. It was heavenly watching the sun rise over the beautiful Idaho mountains!

Another fun winter excursion that I did during my time at Tamarack Resort in Idaho was snowshoeing for the very first time! Located all throughout Tamarack are beautiful trails for you to enjoy whether you choose to go snowshoeing or Nordic Skiing.

For me, there is nothing more refreshing than that crisp and fresh winter air. What is great about snowshoeing at the resort is that you can discover stillness within the rolling Idaho hills, meadows, alpine/aspen/evergreen trees as well as within the Tamarack groves.

Click here to check out Tamarack’s ski packages. The only ski items I had to bring were my winter clothing and goggles. (Please see below my outfit suggestions for a winter ski trip!)

What a BEAUTIFUL resort! My husband and I just drove through ID in December when we were driving down to Jackson, WY from MT. We are dying to go back to see more of ID (hopefully next winter after seeing this). These are amazing suggestions!!

    • Taylor Deer on February 22, 2021 at 1:08 pm

Oh how fun! I did Montana and Wyoming in September and it was absolutely beautiful there. I’d love to see more of Idaho too one day. 🙂

  17. Catherine on February 22, 2021 at 4:28 pm

This is so silly, but I never think of going to a ski resort because I don’t ski. But the photo of you snowshoeing reminded me that I *do* love that winter activity—so should mix up my winter travel! I’d love to check out Tamarack in Idaho, especially because it’s near my home in Oregon.

    • Taylor Deer on February 23, 2021 at 9:20 pm

I totally get it Catherine! A lot of people don’t realize how much there is to do on a winter trip besides ski/snowboard. Also you’d love Tamarack! 🙂
