Turneffe Island Resort – the place where guests “Come as Strangers” and “Leave as Friends”. During August 2019, I traveled to the unspoken wonders of the Turneffe Atoll where I met with three other travel bloggers and influencers to experience an adventure in the glistening Caribbean Sea and around the coral island of Little Caye Bokel.

The three other bloggers and influencers I experienced Turneffe Island Resort with were Gabrielle of The Trini Traveller (click here to read her blog post on Turneffe); Shwetha of Chasing Shwetha (click here for her blog) and Diana of DWanderess. Together, we enjoyed fun water activities around the island and resort; relaxed at the resort’s beach and pool as well as the many lounge areas and hammocks; savored three delicious meals a day; started the day with a colorful sunrise; ended it with a breathtaking sunset and watched the beautiful stars at night. We also did a fun day excursion to Belize’s Great Blue Hole. It was such a memorable four days together and even though we all came from different parts of North America, we left as great friends!

About Belize:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Belize was in fact the first-ever Caribbean and Central American destination that I visited. It is one of the world’s last unspoiled destinations, where individuals consider it “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret”. It also holds the second largest barrier reef in the world behind the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Belize Barrier Reef offers a magical array of marine life and it is where the Great Blue Hole is located. Because of how expansive the Belize Barrier Reef is, the country has become a premier destination for diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. Belizean islands are called Cayes and there are around 450 of them!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

In addition to beautiful islands, Belize also offers mountains, jungle, waterfalls, Mayan ruins and caves. It borders Mexico and Guatemala and it isn’t far from Honduras either. Another fact is that Belize is the only Central American country where English is the official language. Belizeans also speak Creole, Spanish, Garifuna and Mayan.

Getting to Turneffe Island Resort

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Traveling to Turneffe Island Resort from the New York City area requires a 3-hour flight from Newark to Houston, Texas (other popular airport hubs to Belize City are Miami and Atlanta). From Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, it was another 2.5-hour flight to Belize City. When we arrived in Belize City, Turneffe Island Resort organized a private transfer from the airport to the Radisson Fort George Hotel located on the marina where Turneffe’s private boat departs to take you to the resort. (If you have some time before the boat departs, you could grab food and drinks at the Radisson’s pool bar.)

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Prior to your trip to Turneffe Island Resort, they will let you know when you need to arrive in Belize City since the boat leaves the marina at specific times. The overall boat ride from Belize City to Turneffe Island Resort is around 90-minutes long and it is quite an enjoyable ride. We were provided with tropical fruit juice and enjoyed the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea surrounding us.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

When we arrived at the resort, the staff was waiting at the dock and greeted us with a warm welcome! That was one of the best parts about staying at Turneffe Island Resort, everyone was so friendly and the staff will ALWAYS greet you by your first name! The resort also allows everyone to get close because there are scheduled meal times where you eat with other guests and you could literally sit wherever you want at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Looking to make friends? Just go up and sit at any table and get to know others. There are also scheduled activities where you could have fun and adventure with other guests. It’s such an amazing concept! (Ps. this concept is not only great for couples on vacation, it is also amazing for solo travelers!)

Staying at Turneffe Island Resort:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Another amazing aspect I LOVED about staying at Turneffe Island Resort is that you are getting a boutique and authentic experience. Plus the resort is sustainable! Because Turneffe was built around world-class, all-inclusive fishing, diving and snorkeling experiences, the resort attracts adventure-seekers who also enjoy the luxury of staying at an all-inclusive island resort. Turneffe Island Resort is remote and offers a lot of space for individuals, couples, friend groups and families to get closer to themselves and enjoy the beautiful sites that the Turneffe Atoll is renowned for.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

The accommodations at Turneffe Island Resort are guest room and private villa style. The rooms are filled with mahogany wood and they feature a large and comfortable bed that came with tropical flowers on it when I first arrived. Depending on your budget, number of guests and what you are looking for, you have a choice of staying in a Deluxe Guest Room, Superior Guest Room (which is what I stayed in), Private Villa, Honeymoon Villa and Presidential Villa.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

In the Superior Guest Room, I enjoyed my own private screen-in porch that overlooked the beautiful blue sea, a lovely en-suite bathroom as well as an outdoor shower. (The outdoor shower felt amazing with the tropical breeze in my face.) The staff also came in the morning to make up the room and they also prepared it in the evening before I went to bed. As they prepared the rooms for bedtime, they left a different poem on the bed. It was so cute!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

In addition, the room also comes with beautiful island furniture, lounge chairs and a mini refrigerator that included candy, water, soda and alcohol.

Eating and Drinking at Turneffe Island Resort:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

The food and drinks at Turneffe Island Resort were absolutely incredible. Turneffe Island Resort will blend traditional Belizean fare with flavors as worldly as their guests. (During my four days at Turneffe Island Resort, there were guests from Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Texas, Rhode Island, Italy, Canada, Australia, Utah, New York, London and other parts of the world.)

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Every morning, the staff at Turneffe will deliver coffee, tea or hot chocolate outside of your door right before the sun rises so that you could enjoy your morning beverage with a view. (It was the best!)

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Included in Turneffe’s dining experience are three meals: breakfast, which is served at 7am; lunch, which is served at 12:30pm and dinner, which is served at 7pm. Right before lunch and dinner, staff will ring a bell (similar to summer camp) to alert everyone that the food is ready. Some of my favorite meals during my time at Turneffe was a fresh lobster dinner served with pasta, an almond-crusted red snapper sandwich, a warm peanut butter chocolate chip blondie, key lime pie and a delicious coconut cake.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Happy hour includes hor d’oeurves that are served by the pool bar at 6pm everyday. What I loved about happy hour is that everyone would gather before dinner and sip a refreshing cocktail made by the awesome bartender! (I LOVED the piña coladas.) You could also bring your drink into the dining room too and the bartender will come around and see if anyone needs a refill while they eat.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Also included in a package with Turneffe are to-go lunches for fishing excursions and the day trip to the Great Blue Hole. There is also all-day snacks and juices in the dining room for you to grab at any time during the day. On Friday night, there is an outdoor BBQ dinner with hermit crab races. (You could also book your own private dinner where Turneffe will set up a romantic table for you and your partner to enjoy with stunning views.)

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

*What I also loved about the dining experience at Turneffe is that they will cater to your dietary needs and restrictions. Since I don’t eat red meat and certain cheeses make me sick, Turneffe either had a vegetarian option or a substitute when they served one of those items.

Activities at Turneffe Island Resort:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

There are a lot of fun water activities to enjoy at Turneffe Island Resort. You could do fly fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. You could also relax, enjoy a well-needed spa treatment and experience the Great Blue Hole every Tuesday.

Fishing:

One of the top unique activities that Turneffe Island Resort is known for is fly-fishing. On a fishing excursion, Turneffe will take you to nearby salt flats where you could catch numerous types of fish. You could also catch a Caribbean Grand Slam, which is a bonefish, tarpon and permit.  If you catch a Grand Slam, you will be recorded in the International Game Fish Association.

Snorkeling:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Since I haven’t had the chance to become PADI certified, I was more than happy to partake in some amazing snorkeling. I have snorkeled in the Greek Islands, Sicily and the Thai Islands, but nothing will ever be as epic as snorkeling in Belize. It was like I discovered a whole new world!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

During my first full day at Turneffe Island Resort, I participated in two snorkeling excursions (one in the morning and the other in the afternoon). During that day, I saw a Tarpon, Barracuda, Yellow Stingray, Rainbow Parrot Fish, Juvenile Queen Angel Fish, Scrawled Cow Fish, Banded Butterfly Fish, Spot Fin Butterfly Fish, Rough Face Blenny, Scrawled Trunk Fish, Juvenile Yellowtail Damsel Fish and a Spanish Hogfish. The coral reefs were absolutely magical and I also saw so many conch shells.

Activities on the Turneffe‘s Property:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

While you are enjoying the resort, you could go swimming in the sea or pool, kayak, paddle board and/or sail on the Hobie Cat. I did the kayaking and a few of us also went on the Hobie Cat one day (which was so much fun and we went so fast too).

Day Trip to the Great Blue Hole:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

One of the top experiences during my time at Turneffe Island Resort was the day trip to the Great Blue Hole – a geological wonder! Originally a limestone cave, the Great Blue Hole flooded and collapsed thousands of years ago in the Ice Age. Located at the center of the Lighthouse Reef (within the Belize Barrier Reef) and 60 miles off the coast of mainland Belize is the world’s largest underwater sinkhole, measuring 984 feet in width and 410 feet in depth.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Now, one thing to note about the Great Blue Hole is that you will not find a lot of colorful coral or tropical fish. It is the colorless caverns and age-old-stalactites that are the main attraction. Divers can go 130 feet into the rare geological formation. Another reason why the Great Blue Hole is a popular dive spot is because of Jacques Cousteau. In 1971, the legendary oceanographer, diver and undersea explorer sailed to Belize and ventured into the Great Blue Hole, exploring its limestone walls. He officially declared it one of the top 10 dive sites on Earth.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Our day to the Great Blue Hole started early. Since it would take us another 90 minutes to get there, we sailed out at 7:30am so that we were one of the first ones there (it could get very crowded and authorities will limit the amount of boats coming into the Great Blue Hole). The boat ride to the Great Blue Hole was admittedly pretty rough. A lot of us felt sick, but we made it through. Once we got to the Great Blue Hole it was all worth it!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

One thing about going to the Great Blue Hole is that you cannot actually see the hole at sea level. Unless you are in a plane, helicopter or taking footage with a drone camera it is nearly impossible to see it from a boat or ship. The water surrounding the Great Blue Hole is incredible though! It is some of the clearest water I’ve ever seen.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

During the snorkel excursion at the Great Blue Hole we saw a Nurse Shark! (Nurse Sharks have no teeth, are super friendly and protect a lot of species around them, so you do not have to worry about them attacking.) In addition to the shark, we also saw a Channel Clinging Crab, Bermuda Chubb, Queen Angel Fish and Brittle Star. After snorkeling and diving in the Great Blue Hole, Turneffe had warm chocolate chip cookies for us to enjoy!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Half Moon Caye:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

After our time at the Great Blue Hole, we made our way to the private Half Moon Caye, where we got to wander around the beautiful beaches and snorkel again. I will admit that the snorkeling at Half Moon Caye was better than the Great Blue Hole. We saw two Nurse Sharks, Yellow Stingray, Jolt Head Porgy, Barracuda, Sail Fin Blenny and Blue Striped Grunt. (During this time, the divers were taken to a different location.) After both excursions, we all met together to enjoy a picnic lunch by Turneffe. There were fresh fruits, chips and various salads. (The pasta salad was delicious and I’m not usually a pasta salad girl.)

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Half Moon Caye is also known for its bird sanctuary. There is a walking trail that will lead you into a forested area where you could spot the Red-footed Booby bird. Unlike other seabirds, the Red-footed Booby displays a variety of color morphs. These birds are unique to Belize’s wildlife and you can’t even find them in the Galapagos Islands.

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Long Caye Wall:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Our last excursion of the day was to Long Caye Wall. The water is much deeper in Long Caye, so we didn’t get too close to the coral reefs, but we still got to see Hog Fish, Southern Stingray, Rock Beauty, Rock Hind, Black Grouper and Queen Trigger Fish. After this last snorkeling adventure, Turneffe had watermelon and beer waiting for us. Thankfully, the boat ride back to the resort was a lot quicker and easier than it was from earlier in the day. Overall, it was an amazing day trip and if you want to experience the Great Blue Hole, it is best that you ensure you are at Turneffe Island Resort during a Tuesday because that is the only day they do this specific excursion.

Sustainability:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

Another awesome aspect about Turneffe Island Resort is that they have an eco-conscious mindset. The resort integrates environmental initiatives that involve staff and guests in the conservation of the Turneffe Atoll and its reefs. Click here to check out Turneffe’s environmental initiatives.

Heading Back Home After an Amazing Adventure:

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

When it is (sadly) time for you to head home, Turneffe Island Resort will provide you with a sheet of all the fish you saw during your snorkeling/diving excursions. They will also sail you back to the Radisson in Belize City where you could wait until your flight home. (You could also walk around the surrounding area and check out the tourist market near the port. I recommend grabbing a smoothie at Creme de la Creme because all proceeds go towards the local San Cas Park for children.) When it comes time to get to the airport, Turneffe will drive you there. They are awesome!

An Escape to Turneffe Island Resort in Belize

PS. Staying at Turneffe Island Resort is a great way to disconnect from the digital world. There is no cell phone service on the island and WiFi connection is available, but very weak. It is perfect because it allows you to stay present and enjoy the little moments.

After snorkeling and diving in the Great Blue Hole, Turneffe had warm chocolate chip cookies for us to enjoy!

Half Moon Caye:

Long Caye Wall:

When it is (sadly) time for you to head home, Turneffe Island Resort will provide you with a sheet of all the fish you saw during your snorkeling/diving excursions. They will also sail you back to the Radisson in Belize City where you could wait until your flight home. (You could also walk around the surrounding area and check out the tourist market near the port. I recommend grabbing a smoothie at Creme de la Creme because all proceeds go towards the local San Cas Park for children.) When it comes time to get to the airport, Turneffe will drive you there. They are awesome!

PS. Staying at Turneffe Island Resort is a great way to disconnect from the digital world. There is no cell phone service on the island and WiFi connection is available, but very weak. It is perfect because it allows you to stay present and enjoy the little moments.
