First-Time Solo Female Travel Destinations by Continent

A woman on a solo female travel journey in Bavaria, Germany

Solo travel changed my life!

I started solo traveling later into 2018 at the age of 27, but boy I wish I started sooner.

Honestly, the thought of traveling alone as a female even a year prior to starting my solo travel journey gave me a lot of anxiety. I would constantly wait around and pray that someone was available to take the trip of my dreams with me.

I got fed up feeling like I needed a significant other or friend who travels to always take that epic trip with me, so I decided to take the leap of faith!

My first-ever solo trip was December 2018 to the European Christmas markets in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.

I will admit that it felt a little weird being alone in a foreign country by myself on the first day and I even told myself that I would never travel solo again because it just wasn’t for me, BUT that changed very quickly and by the end of the week, I had gotten comfortable and confident navigating public transportation, eating out by myself and making new friends.

If you are pondering whether to take a solo trip or not, I say go for it!

Solo travel pushes you out of your comfort zone, it allows you to be on your own schedule and do what you want without having to answer to others. Most importantly, solo female travel allows you to gain confidence and explore the world with your own eyes.

As Diane von Furstenberg says, “You are the one that possesses the keys to your being. You carry the passport to your own happiness.”

One of the best ways to meet other travelers as a solo adventuress is by staying at hostels. I recommend doing your research and choosing a hostel that offers what you are looking for.

If you are someone who enjoys the privacy of having your own room, there are a plethora of hostels that have a private room option. If you are looking to save money and don’t mind sharing a room with others, there will usually be all female or mixed gender dorm rooms that you could stay in.

A lot of hostels around the world will offer social gatherings, events and city tours so that people could meet each other.

What to do in Munich:

  • Attend an Event: Two of the best times to visit Munich is during Oktoberfest in the autumn season and also Advent Season in December leading up to Christmas. As I mention above, I visited Munich for the Christmas markets and it was so dreamy. I truly enjoyed sipping glühwein, savoring delicious bratwurst and getting into the Christmas spirit. If you travel to Munich outside of both those seasons, it is recommended to experience Munich’s beer scene at Hofbrauhaus, which is the largest biergarten in the world and where Oktoberfest is hosted every year.
  • Walk through Residenz Palace: Known as the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria, Germany, it is recommended to visit the Residenz during your solo trip. Of course, there is nothing like having a refreshing beer on the side!
  • Visit Neuschwanstein Castle: One of the top things to do during a trip to Munich is visit the Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps. Unless you rent a car, you will need to visit Neuschwanstein Castle on a tour. Located in the town of Hohenschwangau, there are numerous restaurants you could eat at and I recommend taking a walk around Alpsee Lake that offers breathtaking views. You could also see the Hohenschwangau Castle from there. After that, you could take a hike up to Neuschwanstein Castle where you are able to go inside and learn all about King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

If you decide to visit Nuremberg from Munich during Christmastime, it is a MUST to walk around the Nuremberg Christmas markets.

A woman enjoying her solo female travel adventure by paragliding in Queenstown

When I was there, I savored a delicious pulled BBQ chicken sandwich and it was amazing!

It is the best way to get a taste of Andean culture. As you stroll around, there will be artisans selling wonderful crafts and friendly locals will be walking around with llamas and alpacas.
  • Visit the Historical Sites around the Plaza de Armas: The Plaza de Armas in Cusco is absolutely beautiful as it features a mix of Inca and European Spanish architecture. As you walk around the Plaza de Armas area, you could see the original Inca walls that are made out of large stones. Located in the Plaza de Armas is also the Cusco Cathedral and Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus.

A beautiful view Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany

As you walk around the palace, you could admire the stunning architecture along with all the room decorations and displays.
  • Savor Authentic German Food: You cannot visit Munich and not have dinner at an authentic German restaurant. During my solo trip to Munich, I indulged in delicious German food at Wirtshaus Kurgarten. I savored spätzle with fried onions in a light gravy sauce. It was amazing!
  • Do a Day Trip to Nuremberg: Nuremberg is the second largest city in Bavaria, Germany. If you decide to visit Nuremberg from Munich during Christmastime, it is a MUST to walk around the Nuremberg Christmas markets. If you are adventuring to Nuremberg any other time throughout the year, I recommend visiting the Imperial Castle, climbing the Frauenkirche (at the Church of Our Lady’s tower) and savoring delicious bratwurst (Nuremberg is known for their mini bratwurst).
