Top 10 USA spring break destinations

Travel Resources for Spring Breakers:

A woman on a trip in the mountains of California

When it comes to actually getting to your spring break destination, you could either fly, drive or take public transportation. If you’re planning a road trip, you could also rent an RV and get to experience a bit of van life!

From my past spring breaks, I remember doing a family road trip from Northern New Jersey to Orlando, Florida when I was in middle school and it was such a blast! We had a great time stopping at South of the Border on the North and South Carolina state line as well as visiting our favorite road trip restaurants such as Cracker Barrel!

During my senior year college spring break, my friends and I flew to Daytona Beach, which saved us a lot of time!

Below are my suggestions for booking flights, transportation and accommodation:

Best USA Spring Break Destinations:

Sunset Cliffs in San Diego - one of the best spring break destinations

For the College Partygoer – Daytona Beach, Florida

A woman on college spring break in Daytona Beach in 2013

Starting off with the first of the top 10 USA spring break destinations is Daytona Beach, Florida, which is the destination I visited when I was a senior in college. As a 21-year-old who wanted to have a good time with my friends at the beach, Daytona was the perfect destination as it was affordable, fun and had great weather!

During a spring break vacation in Daytona Beach, there are numerous beach parties, themed pool parties at specific beachfront resorts as well as fun bars and nightclubs in the evening. When I went on my college spring break to Daytona in March 2013, my friends and I had fun at a Dole sponsored beach party where there were games, competitions and free Dole pineapple fruit and snacks!

My friends and I also had a blast at a luau pool party as well as a blacklight party at one of the local nightclubs. We also ate delicious seafood at a few of the great restaurants on the Daytona Beach boardwalk and enjoyed all of the beautiful ocean views on the Ocean Walk.

Since Daytona Beach, FL is known for all things car related, you can drive and park your vehicle on the beach there and I also recommend checking out the Daytona International Speedway!

Overall, Daytona is one of the top spring break destinations for college students looking to have a fun time and make great memories. (Please note that you must be 21+ to drink alcohol in the United States.)

Other great things to do in Daytona Beach are to go on a dolphin and manatee tour, enjoy shopping, visit the Daytona Lagoon waterpark or Marine Science Center and even do a day trip to Walt Disney World!

For the Music Lover – Nashville, Tennessee

Pinewood Social in Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville, Tennessee is one of the liveliest and most fun cities in the United States. With its great live music and art scene, delicious dining options and wonderful museums, Nashville makes for a wonderful spring break option for music lovers!

Even though country music is what the city of Nashville is known for, you could find everything from honky tonks (live country bars) to 90’s bars. There is also Pedal Tavern, which is a fun BYOB bike bar that you peddle around the city with your friends!

A fun thing to do in Nashville is visit Pinewood Social, which is a trendy social hub that includes a coffee lounge, bar, a 50’s retro-style bowling alley, outdoor heated pools and yard games.

In addition, explore the city through mural hunting (Nashville is known for some of the most talented street art in the United States) and check out Marathon Music Works, which features a winery, distillery, coffee shop and more!

Nashville also has great BBQ and Southern comfort restaurants! You could also catch a stunning sunset at Nissan Stadium (where the Tennessee Titans play), visit the Grand Ole Opry and even do a day trip to Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

For the Adventurer – Denver, Colorado:

A woman exploring Garden of the Gods in Colorado - one of the best spring break destinations

Sometimes spring break means hiking 14ers, admiring epic views and tasting different craft beers. For those looking for a great mountain escape, I highly recommend Denver, Colorado as one of the best USA spring break destinations.

During a trip to Denver, I suggest planning a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. There are a variety of different hikes to do within the park and you could also visit different sites that will take your breath away.

Other great places to visit and hike near Denver in the state of Colorado are Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs; the Paint Mines Interpretative Park in Calhan as well as doing a 14er to Torreys Peak (where you hike over 14,000 feet above sea level).

Also located in Denver is Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater where you can catch a concert, take a yoga class or even watch the stars at night.

What is great about Denver and the rest of Colorado is that there are great breweries and restaurants for you to enjoy during your spring break! You could also find great beer and bites in the towns of Boulder, Colorado Springs and Estes Park.

If your spring break also falls in the beginning of March, like mine did in college, there may even be some ski resorts that are still open where you could enjoy the slopes at Vail, Breckenridge and more!

For the City People – New York City, New York

A woman enjoying spring fun in NYC - one of the top 10 USA spring break destinations for city lovers

If you are a city lover, then look no further than the greatest city in the world for your spring break!

In my opinion, and I may sound biased because I’m from the area, but New York City makes for one of the top USA spring break destinations because you seriously have everything from Broadway shows to renowned restaurants and amazing rooftops to beautiful parks.

During a spring break city getaway to New York, I highly recommend doing a food tour like the one I did with NYC Urban Adventures in October 2020. NYC is known for its pizza, bagels and more, so this is the best way to get a taste of everything locals rave about!

I also suggest having fun on a rooftop like Mr. Purple or Magic Hour where you could sip on refreshing cocktails while enjoying a gorgeous sunset! There are also wonderful spots like City Winery and the Frying Pan that are located on the Hudson River where you could savor good food and drinks with a view.

Other spectacular things to do in NYC during your spring break is to enjoy all of its nature at its magnificent parks! Central Park is absolutely breathtaking and is the perfect spot to take a stroll and also have a picnic. NYC also has The High Line along the Hudson River where you can stroll for blocks on end.

For the Girly Girls – Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia

A woman in Savannah. Georgia

If you and your girlfriends are looking to enjoy a lovely spring break, I couldn’t recommend both Charleston and Savannah combined more! (I even suggest adding Hilton Head into your Charleston and Savannah itinerary if you are looking to get some beach time in your spring break.)

Overall, I recommend both Charleston and Savannah for the girly girls as one of the top USA spring break destinations because they are very feminine cities in a sense that you could find so many beautiful “Instagrammable” locations, trendy boutique shopping, various wine bars and amazing restaurants.

During a spring break escape to the Southern cities of Charleston and Savannah, there are so many beautiful and colorful homes to admire, restaurants with the best lowcountry food, cute rooftop bars, wonderful brunch spots and more.

One of the most thrilling things you could do in both Savannah and Charleston are ghost tours. Both cities are super haunted, so one of the best things you could do with your girlfriends on a trip to Savannah and Charleston is participate in a haunted night tour where you could get spooked out together! From there, you have a reason to grab some cocktails afterwards.

For those Who Love it All – San Diego, California

A woman at La Jolla in San Diego, one of the best USA spring break destinations

San Diego, California has it all – beach, mountains, desert, city, great food, great wine and beer as well as adventure! If you are someone who looks for it all during a vacation, I highly recommend San Diego as one of the greatest USA spring break destinations!

Some of the best things to do during a trip to San Diego is see the seals at La Jolla; go on a hike at Torrey Pines; enjoy a beach day at Coronado; have a bonfire at Mission Beach; savor delicious food (San Diego is known for its incredible Mexican eateries as well as Asian cuisine); stroll through the beautiful Balboa Park and have fun in the Gaslamp Quarter.

What is also great about visiting San Diego during spring break is that you could also do some epic day trips to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Orange County Beaches, Los Angeles and more. You could even visit Mexico since the border is right there!

For the Hipsters – Austin, Texas

Barton Springs in Austin, Texas one of the best spring break destinations in the USA

Austin, Texas is a funky city here in the United States for those who love the hippie life! From amazing creative street art to awesome eateries and fun live music venues to great nature spots, there is a reason why Austin, TX is one of the best USA spring break destinations.

During a trip to Austin, Texas, travelers must visit all of the iconic foodie spots like Salt Lick for amazing BBQ, Torchy’s Tacos for delicious tacos, Voodoo Doughnut and Gourdough’s for the best donuts, Chi’Lantro for Korean BBQ mixed with Mexican fare and Jo’s Coffee for great brews.

Other great things to do in Austin are to take a look at all of the amazing street art around the city as well as at Graffiti Park; cool off on a hot day at Barton Springs or Lake Travis; stroll through Zilker Park and Botanical Gardens and watch the bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge!

One of the most fun things to do during a spring break getaway to Austin, Texas is enjoy the live music scene on 6th Street or Rainey Street. Throughout the city, you could find numerous bars and restaurants with live country, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, indie and classic rock.

For those Looking for a Tropical Vacay – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A woman on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida - one of the most fun spring break destinations

After visiting Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the first time in March 2017, I could definitely say that its beaches and water are close to those you’d find in the Caribbean. For spring breakers looking for a tropical escape with a fun party scene in the USA, Fort Lauderdale is definitely one of the top 10 spring break destinations.

In addition to enjoying the beautiful white sand beaches with tall palm trees, the water in Fort Lauderdale is similar to those you’d find in places like Anguilla! It is perfect for swimming, snorkeling and more.

Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale is an amazing strip with renowned restaurants, charming cafés, boutique shops and more. You could find some of Fort Lauderdale’s best bars and nightclubs on Las Olas as well! Another great area to have fun and enjoy shopping, good food and drinks is on the Beachfront Promenade.

Some great day trips you could do from Fort Lauderdale during your spring break is go to Miami, explore The Everglades, visit West Palm Beach and more!

For those Wanting to Feel Like They’re on the Riviera – Catalina Island, California

A woman at Catalina Island in California

For those wanting to get the Mediterranean experience during their spring break, especially when they are unable to make their way over to Europe, Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles is the perfect place to feel like you’re on the Riviera!

After visiting Catalina Island, California on a family vacation during summer 2016, I could definitely say that if you could visit this beautiful spot, you will see why it is one of the USA’s top spring break destinations!

Avalon Harbor is a rustic and old-world seaside town that will bring you straight to Italy, France, Greece or even Spain! During your time on Catalina Island, there are a lot of amazing restaurants ranging from Italian to seafood that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of the Mediterranean.

During a spring break trip to Catalina Island, you can enjoy the beach as well as zip lining, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, paddle boarding, biking, hiking and more! I also recommend doing the Avalon Scenic Tour, which is what I did during my time there in 2016. On this tour, you can learn about the island’s history!

For Those Who Want to Be a Kid Again – Orlando, Florida

A woman enjoying Walt Disney World - one of the top USA spring break destinations

Obviously, the best place in the world for those looking to relive their childhood is Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. Over the years, I have done dozens of trips to Disney World, but some of my most fond memories were when I visited with my family during a few spring breaks when I was still in grade school.

Overall, Orlando, Florida makes for one of the best spring break destinations in the USA because it is perfect for everyone – families, friend groups and couples. You also not only have Walt Disney World to visit, but you can also enjoy Universal Orlando ResortUniversal Studios and Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld and more.

During a spring break vacation in Orlando, Florida, you can meet your favorite Disney characters at Magic Kingdom, enjoy your favorite rides at Universal, travel the world in one day at Epcot and experience the night scene at Disney Springs! No matter what you choose to do in Orlando, Florida, you are guaranteed to have the time of your life!

I can’t decide what kind of person I am. I think I may be all of them. Would love to have the chance to see these amazing places. We do have flights booked for the US this summer, so if all goes to plan New York and Colorado here we come!

Loved Savannah when we visited in the Summer. Orlando is also so fantastic, with Disney World and Universal. Visited those during Summer and Fall and I can understand Spring would be perfect too. Denver and San Diego I’ve been in Spring, but way to short. NYC is always a great idea! Can’t wait to visit Nashville, Charleston and the other places in Florida you’ve mentioned.

What a great list! I have to say that Catalina Island looks NOTHING like the USA and if you didn’t tell me I definitely would’ve thought that was somewhere along the Riviera haha! I absolutely must get to Denver as well – that is my type of vacation! I’d love to get to Savannah too. Great photos!

    • Taylor Deer on March 6, 2021 at 8:58 pm

Austin, Orlando and SC/GA. I loved San Diego and would happily go back there again, and Denver is a great choice for people who love the outdoors
