You can never be bored in New Jersey! Below is a list of winter activities and adventures that can fill your calendar. Check out where to go from January through early March below:

Memorable New Jersey Winter Attractions in the Outdoors:

Enjoy Winter Sports at Mountain Creek Resort:

A woman skiing at Mountain Creek - one of the best things to do in New Jersey in the winter.

(Vernon, NJ, Sussex County)

There’s no better way to enjoy a snow day in New Jersey than skiing or snowboarding at Mountain Creek. Located in New Jersey’s Appalachian Mountains, Mountain Creek is a four-season premier resort that has not only a ski mountain and snow tubing but also mountain biking trails, zip line tours, a waterpark, a mountain coaster, a rope course, a wedding venue and more. It’s one of the best ski resorts near NYC as well!

A ski or snowboard day at Mountain Creek is always memorable. Enjoy the ski resort’s four peaks, 46 trails, 1,040-foot verticle drop, eight lifts including two high-speed gondolas, a terrain park, ski and snowboard rentals, plus more.

Mountain Creek also has trail levels for all abilities, which you can enjoy weather-dependently from mid-December through early April. You can find most beginner green trails on the main Vernon Peak, which boasts the Cabriolet gondola. Vernon Peak also has a few intermediate blue trails and a couple of advanced black diamond trails.

On Granite Peak, intermediate riders can enjoy the longest run, called Southern Sojourn, a blue trail. The South Peak is where Mountain Creek’s freestyle terrain slopes are located and Bear Peak mainly boasts black diamond runs.

Since New Jersey doesn’t get as much snow as places like Jackson Hole, Mountain Creek has an efficient snow-making process to ensure all the popular trails have desirable terrain. (Mountain Creek is the perfect place to practice before visiting the bigger mountains in the Rocky Mountains or the Alps.)

Just like other ski mountains, Mountain Creek offers private and group lessons for those wanting to learn how to ski or snowboard. There is also snow-tubing for those who don’t participate in winter sports but still want to make memories with friends and family.

During a day at Mountain Creek, you can warm up, eat and grab a drink at the Red Tail Lodge, which is at the base of Vernon Peak, as well as at South Lodge, which is at the bottom of South and Bear Peaks.

In the Red Tail Lodge, you can grab food at Schuss, which has wood-fired flatbreads, signature cocktails and over 20 varieties of beer; The Market, which has typical lodge food like chicken fingers, fries, burgers, etc.; as well as The Biergarten, which has local craft beers, burgers, soup, sandwiches and more.

At the South Lodge, you can celebrate a successful ski or snowboard day at Kink, which has an extensive list of craft beer and American BBQ, along with South Square, which has typical lodge food like chicken fingers, burgers, etc.

Mountain Creek also has lodging at The Appalachian, which offers cozy rooms with fireplaces, an outdoor heated pool with a hot tub, a fitness center, a bar and a grab-and-go market. The ski resort is also not far from Crystal Springs Resort.

Go Snow Tubing at Campgaw Mountain:

Snow tubing during a New Jersey winter.

(Mahwah, NJ, Bergen County)

One of the leading things to do in New Jersey in the winter is snow tubing at Campgaw Mountain. Whether you visit during the day or at night, snow tubing at Campgaw is fun for the whole family.

This fun and easy winter activity requires minimal physical activity and is a thrilling experience that will leave you and your loved ones with lasting memories. Inflated snow tubes are provided for anyone who books a tubing experience at Campgaw. A surface lift takes everyone to the top of the hill, where riders can choose between different tube runs with varying levels of rollers and pitch.

There are 15-17 snow tubing lanes that are 800 feet long. All tubers must be at least 48” or taller and buying tubing tickets online in advance is suggested. Click here for tubing rates.

Additionally, Campgaw Mountain is the premier learn-to-ski/snowboarding destination in New Jersey. Private and group lessons are offered at great value, and once you get comfortable on your skis or snowboards, there are eight beginner to intermediate trails to practice on. (I first learned how to ski at Campgaw!)

Overall, Campgaw offers a variety of terrain for all skiing and snowboarding abilities and has 100% snowmaking capabilities. There are also 18 acres of skiable terrain and five chair lifts. Campgaw Mountain is also one of the best places to visit in New Jersey in winter because it offers night skiing.

Campgaw Mountain has a 270-foot vertical drop and at the summit, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Ramapo Valley and New York City skyline.

During a visit to Campgaw Mountain, you can rent ski and snowboard gear and there is a Main Lodge where you can purchase food and hot cocoa. The mountain is usually open from the end of December to the end of March, weather depending.

A great accommodation to book in Mahwah is the Courtyard by Marriott off Route 17. The best places to eat in Mahwah after a day at Campgaw are Mahwah Bar & Grill, Mason Jar and RP Prime Steakhouse.

Do Cross-Country Skiing in High Point State Park:

A woman cross-country skiing during winter.
This photo was not taken at High Point. Instead, it shows a similar experience you can have there.

(Sussex, NJ, Sussex County)

New Jersey has cross-country skiing trails and you must go when it’s a winter wonderland! Located in High Point State Park, New Jersey’s highest mountain, you can enjoy a memorable outdoor adventure through peaceful forests and around lakes, trees, wildlife and sweeping vistas.

Even though New Jersey doesn’t get much snow compared to other destinations in the country, High Point is the best place to be when it does receive snowfall! Located at 1,800 feet above sea level, this mountain is the snowiest spot in the Garden State.

Like regular ski mountains, you can enjoy green, blue and black diamond cross-country ski trails at the High Point Cross Country Ski Center. Because cross-country skis are thinner than regular skis, you go much faster, so the trails aren’t as steep as regular ski mountains.

The Center is open based on weather and the trails are also available at night! You can also take cross-country ski lessons and rent gear from this fantastic spot.

Crystal Springs in Hamburg is the closest resort to the High Point Cross Country Ski Center.

Ice Skate at Van Saun Park:

(Paramus, NJ, Bergen County)

Experiencing Van Saun County Park’s Winter Wonderland is one of the best things to do in New Jersey in the winter with family. From the end of November through the end of February, locals and visitors to Bergen County can enjoy ice skating and ice bumper cars at the rink in Van Saun Park.

You can make memories at this magical destination and take an ice skating lesson, learn to play hockey and enjoy a festive lantern spectacular during the holiday season from early November through mid-January.

Van Saun County Park is a year-round destination in Northern New Jersey. Some of the best things to do there, whether winter or not, are to say hi to the animals at the Bergen County Zoo, enjoy the walking path President George Washington marched through during the American Revolution and ride the carousel.

This magnificent park in Paramus has five major shopping centers, including the renowned Garden State Plaza; it’s nice to treat yourself to some shopping along with a dinner at one of the mall’s restaurants. Paramus, NJ also has a plethora of hotels to suit all budgets.

Participate in the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights:

A polar bear plunge.

(Seaside Heights, NJ, Ocean County)

It’s no secret that one of the most thrilling and fun things to do in NJ in the winter is participating in the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights at the end of February.

The Atlantic Ocean along the Jersey Shore has some of the coldest temperatures at the end of February. Every year, Seaside Heights’ Polar Bear Plunge challenges thousands of brave New Jersey jumpers. In 2024, the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights will occur on February 24.

The Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights is a fundraising event in support of Special Olympics New Jersey. If you choose to donate, you don’t have to plunge, but it’s fun if you do so.

After the cold plunge, jumpers and other supporters celebrate on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk at one of the many bars like Spicy Cantina or Beachcomber Bar & Grill or at one of the many indoor arcades.

It’s a fun day where many locals and “Benny’s” come together during the Jersey Shore’s slowest season, make memories and listen to live music while supporting a great cause!

(Full-time Jersey Shore residents use the term “Benny” to describe stereotypical North Jersey or New Yorkers who only flock to the shore during summer. A “Shoobie” is a similar term for Philadelphia and Pennsylvania seasonal vacationers.)

If you want peace and quiet after the Polar Bear Plunge, head over to Lavallette. Even though there aren’t as many things to do in Lavallette, NJ, during winter as in the summer, fantastic restaurants are still open that offer a fun vibe with delicious food, like Castaway’s Pub and The Crabs Claw Inn.

Participating in the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights makes for a great day trip. However, booking a rental property is best if you stay in the area overnight.

Incredible Indoor Winter Activities in NJ:

Experience the Indoor Adventures at American Dream Mall:

A woman enjoying a ski day at Big SNOW at American Dream - one of the best things to do in New Jersey in the winter.

(East Rutherford, NJ, Bergen County)

Right outside New York City is the second-largest mall in the United States, after Mall of America in Minnesota. American Dream is one of the top places to visit in NJ during winter because it has everything from shopping to skiing and dining to ice skating.

A fantastic place for winter fun at American Dream is Big SNOW. It’s North America’s first and only indoor ski and snowboard resort with real snow! Big SNOW also boasts winter weather that you’d experience on a cold January or February snow day all year. (The only other indoor, year-round ski resort is in Dubai.)

At Big SNOW, you can enjoy blue and green slopes (beginner and intermediate trails), a terrain park, sleigh riding and hot cocoa to warm you up. You could also take a lesson, rent ski and snowboard gear and enjoy Sno-Go Bike Rentals.

There’s also an indoor ski lift and conveyor belt, and all the décor resembles what you’d see at a mountain resort. It’s a fun place to make endless memories no matter the time of year!

In addition to Big SNOW, the other main attractions at American Dream are Nickelodeon Universe, the Western Hemisphere’s Largest Indoor Theme Park and DreamWorks Water Park, the largest Indoor Water Park in North America.

Other fun things to do at American Dream during winter in New Jersey are to go ice skating at The Rink, play mini golf, ride the Dream Wheel (a giant Ferris Wheel), visit the Paradox Museum, challenge yourself at The Escape Game, go indoor surfing at Skudin Surf and enjoy the renowned shopping and dining scene.

The Renaissance Meadowlands Hotel in Rutherford is a wonderful hotel near the American Dream mall.

Escape to Atlantic City:

Atlantic City, New Jersey

(Atlantic City, NJ, Atlantic County)

If you’re looking for a great getaway during winter in New Jersey, you must not overlook visiting Atlantic City in South Jersey. Even though it has one of the best beaches with boardwalks to enjoy during the warmer months, Atlantic City is still a year-round destination!

Staying at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City is one of the top romantic things to do in NJ in the winter, especially around Valentine’s Day. This five-star luxury hotel, owned by MGM Resorts, has a comedy club, casino, spa, great dining, an indoor pool and fun nightlife! During the winter, you can even catch a show at the Borgata.

Other great things to do in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the winter are to walk the Boardwalk, see the Absecon Lighthouse, make memories at TopGolf, go shopping at the Tanger Outlets and make a day trip to the charming seaside village of Cape May.

Treat Yourself to a Wellness Experience at SoJo Spa Club:

(Edgewater, NJ, Bergen County)

Undoubtedly, treating yourself to a well-needed spa day is one of the best things to do in New Jersey in the winter! Overlooking the Hudson River and NYC skyline in Edgewater, NJ, SoJo Spa Club is the best day spa in the Garden State.

During a spa day at SoJo, you can enjoy a re-imagined Korean bath house, numerous outdoor thermal pools with incredible views, recharging saunas, astonishing spa treatments and therapies, plus a boutique hotel and superb dining facilities.

Whether revitalizing your skin in the outdoor silk bath, relaxing in the Korean red clay sauna or enjoying cryotherapy in the ice room, you can rejuvenate your soul during a day trip to SoJo Spa Club.

Watch a New Jersey Devils Hockey Game:

(Newark, NJ, Essex County):

Another of the best indoor things to do in New Jersey in the winter is to see a Devils hockey game at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Overall, hockey games are always a great time whether you take the entire family or enjoy a date night! Hockey fans get into it and from the game to the music to the beer and the Jersey spirit, you will surely make memories while watching the NJ Devils.

Afterward, head into downtown Newark to enjoy one of the many Portuguese restaurants, like PortuCale Restaurant & Bar! Another excellent downtown area nearby is Montclair, which has renowned restaurants like PastaRAMEN, breweries like Montclair Brewery, bars like Egan & Sons, dessert spots and more.

The perfect hotel in Montclair is The MC Hotel by Autograph Collection.

Celebrate Mardi Gras in Asbury Park:

Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ.

(Asbury Park, NJ, Monmouth County)

A great place to celebrate Mardi Gras along the East Coast is in Asbury Park, New Jersey. This iconic Jersey Shore city is still rocking during the winter and one of the best times to go on a road trip there is during February. (Asbury Park’s Mardi Gras will take place on February 21, 2024.)

There’s a lot of history to Asbury Park! It’s where famous New Jersey musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi performed at the popular Stone Pony venue. Asbury Park also boasts the iconic 1920s Paramount Theater, the Silverball Retro Arcade and the Wonder Bar.

During February, Asbury Park has fun Mardi Gras festivities where you and your friends can make memories of enjoying a dog parade, bar hopping, a costume party, Zydeco dinner dances, masquerade balls, king cake baby hunts and more. There’s something different every year, so keep an eye out for what’s happening in 2024.

A great hotel to stay at in Asbury Park is The Asbury Hotel, which is a block from the boardwalk. You must also visit Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten for great beer and a fun time, along with Porta. Other fantastic places to eat in Asbury Park are Taka, Talula’s and Toast.
