Saving to Travel with Stacks: Save Better

Saving to Travel with Stacks: Save Better

Back in December 2018, I went on my dream holiday getaway to the Christmas markets in Central and Eastern Europe. During my trip, I visited Munich, Salzburg, Budapest and Vienna and made pit stops to rural Bavaria, Hallstatt and Bratislava. Not only did I get to drink glühwein (mulled wine) and wander through the Christmas markets, I got to visit the magical Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, ice skate in front of another castle and relax in a well-needed thermal bath in Budapest and I also got lost in the Austria National Library in Vienna. Thankfully, I was able to find cheap flights and as a blogger, score hotel collaborations in Munich and Budapest.

Even though it was nice to score hotel collaborations for a couple of the cities I was visiting, I still needed to pay for my stay in Salzburg and Vienna. I also had to save for transportation and spending money. Thankfully, Stacks: Save Better was there to save me – literally!

Stacks: Save Better is an automated savings app that allows users to save a specific amount of money per week towards a dream or goal. (The app is available on iOS and will eventually be available on Google Play. Make sure to sign up for the waitlist located on the Stacks: Save Better homepage.) It is super easy to use! All you have to do is download the app. Once the app is downloaded, start by creating a Stack, which is a goal that you are saving for (vacation, car, purse, home, etc.), put in your start and end date and then set up your bank account. Stacks: Save Better will automatically calculate how much money you need to save each week to reach your goal. What is also awesome about Stacks: Save Better is that you could even do a Group Saving Stack and even have others contribute to help with your goal.

I started planning and saving for my Christmas market trip in early fall. I went through everything I was spending money on daily such as morning coffee, going out for lunch and dinner, nights out on the weekends and spending money on unnecessary material items and would add those amounts into my Stacks so that I would use that money to enjoy my trip.

During each week leading up to my trip, I put in $10 to $15 USD to calculate all of the coffee or beverages I would usually spend money on. Next, I added in another $15 to $25 for the lunches and dinners I would’ve usually spent my paycheck on as well. I also limited the amount of time I went out with friends on the weekends, so I would add another $20 to $30 to make up for that. (You could still have fun with friends by doing a movie night or host your own party at your house!)

Even though it may not seem like a lot of money being saved, it all added up after a few months! I was able to pay for adorable hotels in Salzburg and Vienna, bought my train tickets and even had some extra money to treat myself to some authentic meals.

As an avid traveler, I believe that saving on the small, unnecessary things is the best way to afford that dream trip, car, home, purse, electronic, etc. Here are some questions I like to ask myself:

  • “Do I need to buy XXX Coffee every morning when I could just purchase an affordable coffee maker and brew a cup at home?”
  • “Is it necessary to go out and buy lunch every single day when I could purchase items at the grocery store and make my own lunch?”
  • “Do I really need to go out on the town every weekend when I could have my own girls’/guys’ night at my place?”
  • “Could I find an affordable restaurant with authentic food instead of going out to dinner at an expensive place with moderate food?”
  • “Do I really need XYZ? Is it a necessity or could I wait to buy it another time?”

Other great ways to save money by using Stacks: Save Better is by adding in work bonuses, dividend checks, side hustle money as well as money you receive for your birthday, holidays, celebrations and more!

Saving to Travel with Stacks: Save Better

Since I successfully saved with Stacks: Save Better using the above method, I am so excited to start saving for my next big getaway to New Zealand!
