Reconnecting with Getaway House in the New York Catskills

Getaway houses are the perfect solution to unwind and reconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life. In March 2019, I was excited to escape my crazy busy blogging life and unplug in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. I was beyond excited to partner with Getaway who provided me an adorable two-person house in New York to help me relax and rejuvenate.

I believe everyone needs to reconnect in nature every so often and I love how Getaway offers the perfect escape for those in the New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Los Angeles, Portland, Dallas, Houston, Austin/San Antonio and Pittsburgh/Cleveland areas. It is perfect for those who work non stop, are always on the go and live busy lives to sit back and savor nature. Getaway is also great for a romantic escape, a girls’ weekend or to even reconnect solo. You could also bring your furry friend! These wonderful cabins are available year round!

A snow filled hike in Upstate New York

In 2019 and early 2020, I made it my mission to explore my local area more. What a lot of travelers don’t know is that there are so many wonderful gems outside of New York City in Upstate New York. From the Hudson Valley to the Catskills and the Adirondacks to the Finger Lakes, this state offers so much adventure and Getaway is helping those escape the concrete jungle and connect to the wonderful nature New York offers. In this blog post, read all about my experience staying in a Getaway house in New York and discover the best things to do during your weekend in the Catskills.

**Please note that Getaway hosted me in their two-person cabin for two nights. Reconnecting in the New York Catskills with Getaway

Checking Into a Getaway House:

A Getaway house in the New York Catskills

One of the top things that I loved about Getaway was that they were very informative and super helpful throughout my entire stay from the moment I checked in to the second I checked out.

When you book your stay, you will be given the address to the Getaway Outpost in your area, your check in date and time as well as your check out date and time. Since I was doing a girls’ weekend Getaway, we made our way a little less than an hour and a half north to Catskill, NY. Since we arrived right after the sun went down, I was honestly a little nervous that we were going to have a tough time finding our little cabin, but the Getaway Outpost was mapped out precisely. It was a piece of cake finding our little house for the weekend, which was called Salvatore! I loved the name and it was so adorable. Apparently, each cabin in the Outpost is named after the grandparents of Getaway’s staff and guests. How cool is that?!

A woman looking out of her Getaway house window in New York

As you approach your house, you could park your car right next to it. All of the houses in the Outpost are pretty spread out, allowing you to enjoy your space, but you could also spot your neighbors from a distance, which is great! (It’s always nice to meet some friendly people.)

On the day of check in, Getaway emailed and texted me my key code to get in the house. It is super simple to use. Also, if you run into any issues, Getaway offers around-the-clock customer service to help you.

Getting to the Getaway House in New York:

A Getaway house in the Catskills New York outpost

Prior to your escape, Getaway will give you a guide on how to get to your cabin.  It is recommended that you take a car and drive directly to the house. There are public transportation options though, so Getaway will give you all the details for that in an email in case you don’t have access to a car.

The Getaway Cabin:

Inside of a Getaway house in New York

Even though the Getaway houses seem small, they are absolutely perfect and include everything you need during your escape. When we first walked into our cabin, I loved the fresh smell of the wood from the interior. I also loved the overall design of the house! (All of the cabins are custom-designed by the Getaway team.) In addition, the cabins are fairly new and are also super clean.

The house had a mini kitchen that included a sink with drinkable water, mini refrigerator and a little stove. It is also equipped with air conditioning and heat. There are also books, a radio, landline phone (in case your Getaway house is situated in an area where there is no cell service), wireless speakers and a fun and cozy hammock!

A woman enjoying her Getaway house in New York

One of my favorite parts of the house was the large, cozy bed. This queen-sized bed is placed right next to the large window in the house, so you could wake up to enchanting forest views. I had such a great night’s sleep because the mattress was comfortable, the fresh white linens felt amazing, the pillows were perfect and the throw blanket was warm. Since I did my Getaway weekend in early spring, it was still pretty chilly outside. On the other hand, the four-person cabins have two queen beds that are lofted (bunk beds).

Getaway encourages you to leave your laptop at home and also leave your makeup home as well. There is no WiFi in the cabins and there are also no mirrors. I will admit that this became a little difficult when putting my contacts in and taking them out, but it was really nice not having to put makeup on. In addition, Getaway believes in minimalism and will provide you with a packing guide of simple essentials such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, clothing, pajamas, undergarments, good walking shoes, anything you can’t live without (such as medication, etc.), weather proof clothing and bug spray for the summer months.

A group of girls enjoying their Getaway house weekend in New York

Another great aspect of staying in a Getaway house is that they have everything you need and nothing you don’t! There are basic cooking items such as salt, pepper, sugar and olive oil. There are also bottle openers and corkscrews, can openers, knives and scissors, a cutting board, grilling utensils for the fire pit outside, a pan, pot, mixing bowl, kettle, mugs, plates, bowls, cups, silverware, paper towels and dish soap. You could also purchase coffee, tea and hot chocolate along with oatmeal, cookies, pasta, marinara sauce, beef jerky and Swedish Fish. The prices of these snacks vary, but nothing costs more than $10 per item. You will be charged at the end of your trip for what you have used.

A Getaway House in the Catskills New York

In addition, there is a picnic table, fire pit, outdoor chairs and a grilling station outside of all the cabins. Getaway will provide you with simple instructions on how to use the fire pit in case you want to do a fire. There are log bundles, a fire starter and lighters for purchase. I will admit that I am not experienced in throwing campfires (I usually have someone else start one while I sit back and enjoy it), so I did not feel comfortable trying it for the first time at Getaway. Maybe next time though!

A group of women laughing and having fun at a Getaway House in New York

Even though the cabin was equipped with everything we needed for the weekend, we still brought a few bottles of wine to enjoy as well as some snacks on the side. In addition, we also brought a few board games and playing cards. What was also awesome about our time at the Getaway house in New York was that they provided us with some great camping jams on Spotify to get us in the solitude mood!

I loved being in the middle of the woods and what was cool about our location is that we saw a few wild turkeys run through our area. There was also a peaceful creek nearby, which was nice listening to.

The Getaway House Bathroom:

A beautiful snow-filled hiking trail in New York

What is nice about Getaway ’s cabins are that they also come with their own private bathroom and shower, so you don’t have to leave your house to do any of that. Since the house is similar to a trailer, the toilet had an interesting flush to it containing aluminum foil. The only thing about the toilet was that you only had so many flushes until it needed to be changed. Thankfully, Getaway was able to fix this right away.

The stainless steel shower was very nice and provided hot water with organic and biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and body wash by Pharmacopia. In addition, Getaway will also provide you with two towels in the two-person cabin. (There will be four towels in the four-person cabin.)

Checking out of Getaway:

When it comes to check out, all you have to do is make sure you pack all your belonings and leave everything from the cabin the way it was before you got there. It is also important to clean up. Once you are ready to leave, you just lock the cabin. It is super simple.

Things to do in the Catskills near Getaway’s Outpost:

Beautiful woodland nature in Upstate New York

Prior to our weekend escape, Getaway also provided us with a list of nearby hiking trails and convenient stores. Even though I’ve been to the Catskills before for a 6th grade field to Frost Valley, a ski weekend in high school and a yoga retreat back in September 2017. Below is where we ate and had fun in the area during our Getaway house weekend in New York:

Mike’s Diner, Catskill, NY (Breakfast):

On our first morning in the Catskills, we went to a great mom and pop diner located a few minutes from our cabin. Mike’s Diner is a great country diner where you could get your typical American breakfast. I enjoyed coffee, orange juice, pancakes and hash browns and my friends had omelets. It was perfect!

Gracie’s Luncheonette, Leeds, NY (Breakfast/Lunch/Brunch):

On our last morning, right before we left, we found a great spot to enjoy a nice brunch right before we hit the Interstate to go home. Gracie’s Luncheonette is a cute, “Instagrammable” spot that offers wonderful brews from the area, a nice Southern comfort breakfast, a great lunch and so much more! On this morning, I enjoyed coffee, eggs with a homemade biscuit, sausage and hash browns. It was so good!

Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company and Italian Restaurant, Catskill, NY (Dinner):

A seafood dinner from Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company

Since we ate dinner in the cabin our first night, we decided to go out to eat our second night. Because the Catskills have some great breweries, we decided to check out Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company nearby. In case you didn’t know, Rip Van Winkle was a fictional character from a story by Washington Irving that was published in 1819. The story was taken place in the area, so that is why the brewery is named after him. Nowadays, Rip Van Winkle Brewery is a brewing company and also an Italian restaurant. (The owners are immigrants from Sicily.) I enjoyed a delicious IPA with a crab stuffed cod dish. It was amazing!

Hudson-Chatham Winery, Tannersville, NY (Winery):

A red wine from a winery in the Catskills

After our well needed hike on Saturday, my friends and I wanted to check out the local winery situated in the colorful downtown area of Tannersville. (We love hiking followed by “wining”. It’s the best combo.) Hudson-Chatham Winery is an indoor winery that is super adorable inside. We did a tasting of five different wines from the long list that Hudson-Chatham Winery offers. I tried a dry white, two bacco noir’s, a signature red and a sparkling red wine (which was new for me). They were all amazing, but I really loved the bacco noir and bought a bottle to take home with me.

Catskill Mountain Country Store, Tannersville, NY (Country Store and Café):

A hot chocolate from Catskill Mountain Country Store

One of the tops things to do in the area is walk around Tannersville. There are so many quaint antique shops and boutiques as well as eateries. (It reminded me a lot of my time in the Poconos of Pennsylvania.) Since it was the middle of the day, my friends and I stopped into the Catskill Mountain Country Store to enjoy their amazing creamy hot chocolate. They gave them to us in this adorable mug above! In addition, you could also get breakfast or lunch at Catskill Mountain Country Store and they even have a bakery.

Kaaterskill Falls, Hunter, NY (Hiking with Waterfalls):

Beautiful Kaaterskill Falls near the Getaway House outpost in New York

Located 20 minutes up the mountain from the Getaway Outpost are Kaaterskill Falls. I absolutely love waterfalls, so I was excited to do this trail. One thing we did not realize though was that it snowed overnight up the mountain from us. Where our Getaway house was situated in New York, there was no signs of snow, but as we made our way up through the Catskill Mountains, there was a lot of snow! (That is common weather for Upstate New York.)

A woman enjoying winter nature in the Catskills

Kaaterskill Falls in located in Hunter, NY, not too far from the ski resort. We could have gone skiing during this getaway, but we were more in the mood to go hiking. Our hike through Kaaterskill Falls trail was absolutely gorgeous with the snow! When we finally reached the waterfall, it was breathtaking. I highly recommend seeing this during your time at Getaway in the Catskills. In addition, we also drove past another beautiful waterfall on our way up the mountain called Haines Falls.

Other Things to do in the Area:

The beautiful snow filled mountains of the Catskills

Overlook Mountain Trail:

If you are looking to do a longer hike, Overlook Mountain Trail is the perfect place to go! During this hike, you could admire the wonderful views from the overlooks. There is also an old fire tower and ruins of a former hotel at the summit. In addition you could also visit a Buddhist temple. If we had more time, I totally would’ve loved to do this hike!

North South Lake:

Another great hike is the North South Lake. It is here where you could catch glistening views of the lake.

Hunter Mountain:

Hunter Mountain is New York State’s most premier resort featuring skiing/snowboarding trails, zip lining, hiking, festivals and events plus a lot of hotels and eateries. It is the perfect four-seasons resort to enjoy.
