A woman happily enjoying skiing activities at Mount Snow, Vermont

Mount Snow in Vermont is a great weekend getaway that offers the best winter activities for anyone who loves to ski and snowboard in the New York City and Boston areas.

With a long winter in the northeast of the United States, I highly recommend making the most out of it by planning a well needed and fun ski weekend in beautiful Vermont.

Winter driving adventures and activities at Mount Snow, Vermont

One of the many hobbies I LOVE is skiing in the winter months. I learned how to snowboard when I was 9 years old at a small ski mountain in my hometown called Campgaw Mountain.

For some reason, the whole being tied down to a snowboard and not being able to move my legs was not up my alley, so a friend of mine and her dad taught me how to ski when I was 12 years old and I fell in love with it! I remember it only took me two and a half days on the bunny slope to finally make my way to the bigger hill.

Once I successfully made my way down without breaking a bone, I became hooked and got a season pass. The rest is history!

Throughout my teens and 20s, I have enjoyed countless skiing memories with my friends.

Even if you don’t ski, all winter sports are super awesome to get into and it gives you a reason to look forward to December through March – months many people dread.

Now, I am super stoked to share one of my favorite ski resorts on the East Coast of the USA  – Mount Snow in West Dover, Vermont!

Mount Snow, Vermont Activities

Getting to and From Mount Snow:

A snowy road amongst Evergreen trees

Since Mount Snow is located in Southern Vermont in the Green Mountains, it is around a 3-hour drive to get there from both the New York City and Boston areas.

Before you go, I highly recommend renting a car to get there (preferably an SUV or a larger vehicle since road conditions could be pretty harsh due to all of the snow).

If you are flying, the closest major airport to Mount Snow is Albany International Airport in the capital of New York. (You could find affordable flights through Skyscanner.)

Where to Stay:

Best activities in Mount Snow, Vermont

There are plenty of hotels and accommodations both on the premises of Mount Snow resort itself and within the surrounding areas. In addition, there are also a variety of Airbnb and Vrbo options too.

I personally recommend staying at Mount Snow because you don’t have to travel far to get to the resort and everything is right there (the slopes, restaurants, bars, activities etc.)

When my friend and I were looking into Airbnb options, houses were very spread apart and a lot of them tend to be a long distance away from Mount Snow, which to me is out of the way and not worth the time and gas if you’re planning to ski every day.

It is important to know that the surrounding area is very desolate and you want to be surrounded by the fun action that the ski resort offers.

Winter activities in Mount Snow, Vermont

Mount Snow offers a plethora of lodging options. The Grand Summit Resort Hotel is a luxury accommodation option at Mount Snow and is situation right at the entrance of the mountain.

Other great accommodations that range from mid-budget to budget options are Snow Lake Lodge, Shearer Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast, Austrian Haus Lodge, Big Bears Lodge, Colonial Motel and Spa, Cooper Hill Inn, Deer Valley Inn, Gray Ghost Inn, Inn at Quail Run, Kitzhof Inn, Lodge at Mount Snow, Mountaineer Inn, Old Red Mill Inn, Putney Inn and The White House Inn.

Mount Snow Mountain:

Winter wonderland activities in Mount Snow, Vermont

Located in the beautiful Green Mountains of Southern Vermont, Mount Snow offers seven awesome mountains that feature countless trails for all ages and levels. Mount Snow also offers memorable winter activities!

Just like most ski resorts, Mount Snow offers a bunny hill that is great for beginners and young children to learn how to ski. Once a beginner graduates the bunny hill, there are numerous mid-way trails for them to take their ski and snowboard skills to the next level.

In addition, there is a snow tubing hill for those who either are not into winter sports or would like to take a fun break from the mountain.

Weekend activities at Mount Snow, Vermont

All of the slopes’ level of difficulty are based by color and shape. The green circle trails are the easier and flatter slopes; the blue square trails are a little windier, narrow and steeper, making it perfect for intermediate skiers; the black diamonds are mainly steep and narrow, making it a fun trail for more advanced skiers and the double diamonds are for expert ski and snowboarders.

The slopes at Mount Snow, Vermont

The Main Face is exactly what its name says. This mountain is where the main ski lift is located that goes from the bottom of the mountain to the Summit Lodge and The Bullwheel.

The Main Face makes it easy for all levels to easily meet up and enjoy the slopes. It is also the mountain that offers learning areas for the Mount Snow Ski & Snowboard School.

Sunbrook is probably my favorite mountain at Mount Snow. This beautiful mountain offers great scenic trails and you can even get the best views of the sunset!

I also love this mountain because it is the most quiet and serene. The chairlifts are smaller, so people with large groups and families tend to stay near the Main Face. What is even more awesome is that the chairlifts will play music while you are on them, making it even more of a peaceful adventure. Most of the slopes on Sunbrook are blue squares and there is one black diamond.

A woman skiing down an expert slope, one of the best activities at Mount Snow, Vermont

If you are an advanced skier or are just looking for an adventure or thrill riding down the slopes, Northface is the perfect mountain.

Many of the trails on Northface are kept un-groomed; you can find moguls if you are looking to ski freestyle and the only double diamond of Mount Snow can be found on this mountain.

You can even find some of the steepest terrain in the Northeast of the USA on Northface. It usually takes me a few rounds on the blues to make it to this area, but when I am skiing down the terrain, I always have a blast and I enjoy the views of the beautiful evergreen trees the Green Mountains feature.

If you are looking to pull a Shaun White or get adventurous, Carinthia is the perfect mountain for that. This fun mountain boasts 100 acres of terrain parks with rails, jumps, creative lines, tree-skiing zones and the super pipe.

If you’re an expert snowboarder and skier, you would love Carinthia! My friend and I would usually do a few rounds in this area, jumping off of the mini jumps and cruising through the half pipe. (Nothing too crazy though.)

Mount Snow Activities and Beyond:

A woman relaxing on a mountain

In addition to skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing, Mount Snow also offers other epic winter activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hiking.

Since Vermont is on the snow belt, the weather on the slopes can get down to negative 20 degrees on some days. I highly recommend getting hand and feet warmers. You could find them at the base of the mountain in the gift shop. It’s also important to cover all exposing skin to prevent frostbite.

Food and Après Ski at Mount Snow:

Campfire activities at Mount Snow, Vermont

One of the most fun parts of a ski weekend is the après ski, also known as the “after ski” in French. It generally refers to all of the social activities that take place post skiing.

After a day skiing the slopes at Mount Snow, we enjoy grabbing a delicious Vermont brew at The Bullwheel, which is located at the Summit Lodge as well as the Station Tap Room, located at the Main Base Lodge.

For lunch, we don’t usually like to eat the lodge food, which is mostly burgers, chicken nuggets, hot dogs and pizza (aka kid food), so we like to grab warm and delicious Belgian waffles with chocolate at Waffle Cabin.

Later in the evening, after we are finished skiing for the day, we like to join the party and liveliness at Cuzzins Bar & Grill. This great sports bar has fantastic live music, which gets everyone up and dancing. It is the best way to end a day of fun adventures and activities at Mount Snow.

Another great thing to do after skiing is to have a camp fire. There is nothing more relaxing and comforting than being around a fire on a cold winter’s night.

Activities Outside of Mount Snow:

Downtown Wilmington in Vermont

After a fun filled day of skiing, we would usually go back to the hotel or house we were staying at and get ready to enjoy a nice dinner in downtown Wilmington, Vermont, located 10 minutes from the ski resort.

This beautiful New England village offers a warm and welcoming downtown area with colonial houses, gas lamps, great restaurants and fun bars.

Every time we go to Mount Snow, we always enjoy having dinner at The Roadhouse – a Vermont farmhouse-inspired restaurant with fresh and local food.

In fact, The Roadhouse is the perfect place to warm up on a cold winter’s night. They have a huge stone fireplace that you can sit near and capture the heat; Christmas lights fill the interior; every table has scented candles and the food is delicious and hearty.

A Vermont farmhouse in the winter

There are a variety of great places to eat in downtown Wilmington and there is also a great selection of bars as well.

In addition to great dinner places and bars, Wilimington also offers a variety of great breakfast and brunch spots to start your day before hitting the slopes.

When we would go, we’d love to eat at a farm-fresh comfort diner called Jezebel’s Eatery. This great place is not like typical all-American diners; it is a farmhouse with warm details and a New England ambiance. Plus the food is delicious!

A happy woman enjoying Mount Snow activities

Overall, I love mini ski trips in the wintertime to Vermont. It is relaxing, peaceful, a great way to meditate, stay active and make great memories.

In addition to Mount Snow, Stratton Mountain is also in the Southern Vermont area. Further north in Vermont you can find some of the East Coast’s most renowned ski resorts such as Killington Resort, Okemo Mountain Resort, Stowe Mountain Resort, Smuggler’s Notch Resort and more!

Your photos are so beautiful! I’ve never been to Vermont but I am dying to visit. It would be so much fun to go snowshoeing or snowboarding during the winter. Michigan has 0 mountains so all we can ski on are old dumps turned “ski resort” 😂😂
