Traveling during Christmas time is always a memorable and joyous experience! It isn’t a secret that my favorite holiday events, which I constantly look forward to during late November through early January, are the European Christmas markets! In fact, some of the best trips to the Christmas markets in Europe were experienced while touring Eastern Europe! Overall, there are many Eastern European Christmas markets you can admire and enjoy this upcoming festive season.

Fairytale cities like Prague to Budapest and Tallinn to Vilnius are transformed into a magical Christmas dream. City centers are filled with wooden stalls, beautiful Christmas trees and sparkly lights. What also makes Eastern Europe special during the month of December are the smells that fill the air. From mulled wine to chimney cakes, there is so much to enjoy at these lovely Christmas markets!

Some of the best Christmas markets in Europe are in Budapest, Hungary. The market stalls within these dashing Eastern European Christmas markets are filled with traditional Hungarian food staples, such as goulash, langos (Hungarian flatbread) , chimney cakes and spiced hot chocolate. There are also plenty of unique, handcrafted trinkets, art, clothing and Christmas decorations.

If you are looking for a beautiful and internationally acclaimed Christmas market, then you need to visit Budapest’s main markets in Vorosmarty Square. This is one of the largest Christmas markets in Europe and walking through it is the perfect way to enjoy the holiday season! In the center of this market, you will be amazed by the nearly 70-foot-tall Christmas tree that boasts dreamy lights and magically decorated streets and stalls.

Another one of the most exciting European city Christmas markets is in St. Steven’s Square in Budapest. In this magical square, there is a pretty Nutcracker display and a stunning Christmas tree.

In addition, the Christmas market by the Vajdahunyad Castle is also enchanting and romantic. In fact, there is a fun ice-skating rink to enjoy right in front of the castle! This Christmas market’s best feature is its incredible food. I personally loved the spiced hot chocolate! Along with stunning, medieval views, there is also a local choir to listen to.

In addition to the Christmas markets, you must also check out Budapest’s ruin bars, Fisherman’s Bastion and the local thermal baths during your December trip to this fascinating city!

Bratislava, Slovakia – Most Underrated Eastern European Christmas Market:

Bratislava, Slovakia has some of the most enchanting Christmas markets and the capital city is a lovely place to experience Eastern Europe in winter.

The main Christmas market in Bratislava is located at the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square within the city. The red and white Christmas stands are filled with delicious food and crafts, which make the city magical during the Christmas season.

For foodies, you’ll fall in love with the variety of strudels, gingerbread cookies, kolaches and Slovak rolls! The mulled wine is also a popular and delicious choice to choose from as you make your way around these exciting Eastern European Christmas markets.

When visiting Bratislava, you must travel to the historic and impressive Bratislava Castle. While you take in the incredible architecture, you can stroll through the other beautiful European Christmas market that is located on the castle grounds.

The Christmas markets in Cesky Krumlov, Czechia are full of culture, history and beauty! The Cesky Krumlov market takes place in late November and continues into early January!

These specific Xmas markets are the perfect activity for a Christmas vacation in Eastern Europe and are considered some of the best Christmas markets in the world! The main Christmas market to attend, while exploring Cesky Krumlov, is the one located in Svornosti Square. This beautiful market has glowing stands with traditional mulled wine and hot beer!

Additionally, there are plenty of tasty food to enjoy at the Cesky Krumlov Christmas market like klobasa, chimney cakes, praska sunka and langos. You can also purchase hand-knitted clothes, art, candles, decorations and much more!

Along with the magical wooden chalets, Cesky Krumlov also boasts a beautiful Christmas tree, nativity scene and a carousel for kids to enjoy! There is also a stage where local choirs and bands perform in the evening. Overall, Cesky Krumlov, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is predicted to be one of the best Christmas markets for 2022.

The city of Krakow, Poland during the winter months is both beautiful and exciting! The Eastern European Christmas markets throughout this city will fill your heart with magic.

In Krakow, the first Christmas market you need to visit is in Rynek Glowny within the Old Town. This historic, 13th Century town is decorated for the festive season with its glowing lights, Christmas trees and mistletoe. It’s known as one of the best traditional Christmas markets in Europe! You can find everything from crafts to clothing within the wooden stalls.

If you are a food lover like myself, then you will enjoy the different treats and dishes you can savor in Krakow during the month of December! My personal favorites were the fresh Polish pierogis and sweet chimney cakes that melt in your mouth. A special Polish delicacy you can find at these awesome Eastern European Christmas markets is smalec, which is a spread made of lard and spices.

When looking for something festive to drink, you can enjoy different meads, mulled beer or Grzaniec Gallicyjski, which is mulled wine. You can also warm up to hot cocoa, coffee, tea and more.

Inside the Krakow Cloth Hall of Rynek Glowny, there are even more Christmas stalls to shop at! During the 14th Century, this space was originally used as an east-west trading post that were filled with textiles and fabrics. Nowadays it’s one of the most magical Christmas markets.

Prague, Czech Republic – Top 10 Christmas Markets in Europe:

Prague, Czechia is a timeless city to admire during the month of December and the Christmas markets that it boasts are among the 10 best Christmas markets in Europe! Visiting Prague will make you feel like you are in a Hallmark movie with its welcoming atmosphere and spectacular decorations.

Starting in late November, you can experience all that Prague’s Christmas markets have to offer! A famous Christmas market to enjoy is within the Old Town Square. While it’s considered one of the more crowded Christmas markets, it is still impressive with its popular Astronomical Clock Tower, beautiful Christmas tree, mini zoo and performance stage.

Another great set of Eastern European Christmas markets to enjoy in Prague are those near the National Museum. Additionally, at Wenceslas Square, you can enjoy the Christmas trees change colors along the Václavské Nám.

The food in the Wenceslas Square Christmas market is delicious. A great combo is a sausage sandwich with medovina (honey wine) and a trdelník (chimney cake). Other great Christmas markets to check out in Prague are at the Peace Square, the Republic Square and Prague Castle! These spots are festive and make for some of the best Christmas places in Europe to try some traditional Czech cuisine.

The number of magical Christmas markets spread throughout the city of Prague, along with its beautiful architecture, is what makes it one of the best European destinations to visit during the holiday season!

Riga, Latvia – Best Place to Go for European Winter Travel:

One of my favorite Christmas market trips was to Riga, Latvia in the Baltic States. Riga is the winter wonderland of Eastern Europe during the month of December and it has plenty of fun Christmas activities to get you into the holiday spirit!

Located in Doma Laukums, or the Cathedral Square, this market is known as one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. It’s also one of the best snowy Christmas markets!

There are additional markets located in Livu Square, Esplanade Park and Vērmane Garden as well. The authentic wooden stands glow under the magical Christmas lights and are full of Christmas treats, clothes, jewelry, trinkets, decorations and more!

An interesting part of Riga’s history is that it was the birthplace of the Christmas tree! Thus, throughout the streets of Riga, you’ll love all the beautiful Christmas trees that line the timeless streets of Latvia’s capital city and its magical Eastern European markets.

Tallinn, Estonia – Best Christmas Markets in Europe with Snow:

When completing an Eastern Europe tour during Christmastime, you cannot miss Tallinn, Estonia’s Christmas markets. Located in the Town Hall Square of Tallinn is one of the most festive places and will be one of the best Christmas markets in Europe for 2022.

When I visited the Tallinn Christmas market in 2021, some things I loved were the historic architecture and glistening winter snow! You can also admire the market’s beautiful Christmas tree that stands in the center of all the action. The atmosphere is charming and magical!

Overall, it is well known that Tallin’s Christmas market leaves a memorable impression on its visitors as it was named the best Christmas Market in Europe in 2019. At this magical Estonian Christmas market, you can enjoy a traditional alcoholic spiced wine called glogg, taste traditional food, like blood pudding, and have gingerbread cookies.

The Tallinn wooden stalls, selling a variety of clothing, trinkets, jewelry and ornaments, are wonderful to browse through. At this European Christmas market, you can also watch a show or concert from local groups or ride the carousel.

Tallinn, Estonia is magical during a winter wonderland! When you visit this stunning city in December, you are more than likely to experience a wondrous snowstorm, so dress warm for the Christmas markets in Tallinn, Estonia.

Vilnius, Lithuania – The Best of Eastern Europe in Winter:

Another one of the best holiday markets to enjoy during Christmas in Eastern Europe is in Vilnius, Lithuania! One thing that makes this European Christmas market unique is that you can simply hop on a train to admire the decorations, concerts and wooden stalls.

The Christmas trees in Vilnius are interesting and feature a different design every year. The coolest tree to check out is the one located in the center of Cathedral Square’s Christmas market! I also loved all the white wooden stalls in Vilnius.

Other great Christmas markets to check out in the city of Vilnius are in Lukiškes Square. At these lovely Eastern European Christmas markets, you will be overwhelmed with the number of tasty treats from roasted chestnuts to grilled meats. Just like other epic Christmas markets, mulled wine and spike hot cocoa are also available at different stalls.

Vilnius, Lithuania also has a lot of magical Christmas decorations and themed bars and restaurants throughout the city. Make sure to check them all out during your December trip!
