If you’re looking for a snowy mountain getaway this Christmas, look no further than Mammoth Lakes, California. It’s nestled in the eastern Sierra Nevada’s and is filled with rustic charm, making it one of the most spectacular and unique December getaways in the USA.
Thanks to its high elevation, Mammoth Lakes is quite cool in December, with daily highs that are usually in the upper 20’s Fahrenheit. There is also a decent chance of snow, making it perfect for a white Christmas!

During these annual festivities, there’s a tree lighting ceremony and a special appearance by Santa Claus!
Once you’ve soaked up as much Christmas cheer as possible, spend the evening at the Juniper Springs Resort, which offers ski-in, ski-out access, heated outdoor pools and in-suite fireplaces.
While you can get to the ski resorts, the town’s hotels and the downtown area with the town’s public transit, it’s best to have a car if you want to explore Mammoth Lakes’ off the beaten path adventures.

Telluride is famous for its ski slopes, which remain refreshingly uncrowded compared to many popular ski destinations in Colorado and within the Rocky Mountains. To get to Telluride, Colorado, you can either catch a flight from Denver International Airport or rent a car in Denver. It takes 6 hours to drive through the state before getting there.

Orlando, Florida:

If you are looking for a warm Christmas destination, look no further than Orlando, Florida. It’s one of the most magical December getaways in the USA! There are plenty of things to do in Orlando at Christmas without needing to pack all of your winter gear.
The theme parks go all out for the holidays with stunning decor and exciting events. However, you can also enjoy walking through the Disney hotels and Disney Springs without having to pay the park entry fees. Disney Springs has a festive tree trail with each tree themed to a different Disney movie or character while the Grand Floridian goes all out with a massive Christmas tree and gingerbread house.
Disney Springs also offers tons of options for dining and dessert lovers won’t want to miss Gideon’s Bakehouse. You’ll also find plenty of hotels options near the parks if the Grand Floridian or other Disney hotels are out of your budget.
Many of the communities surrounding Orlando also have Christmas events featuring outdoor movies, Santa Claus, Christmas lights and even ice skating rinks as well as Florida “snow”. Winter Park is one of the best towns for Christmas events with several throughout December. You can also take a day trip over to Cocoa Beach to see the skydiving Santas at the Cocoa Beach Pier.
Perhaps the best part of Christmas in Orlando is the weather. If you visit near Christmas, you are likely to miss the humidity and daily rain Orlando experiences in the summer. With highs in the 70s and 80s most days and lows in the 50s, you can get by with a light jacket to keep you warm.
When visiting Orlando, because of how spread out things are, your best bet is to rent a car or use a ride sharing app. Orlando’s public transportation is not as good as in many large cities, so unless you are staying at the parks and only visiting the parks, you’ll probably need a car to get around. Some hotels in the more touristy areas will have shuttles to popular spots, but you will be on your own to get to other places.
Add Orlando at Christmas to your USA Christmas destinations bucket list, and you won’t be disappointed!

Natchitoches, Louisiana:

Located along the Cane River in Louisiana, Natchitoches (pronounced at nah kuh tuhsh) boasts the oldest community-based holiday celebrations in the United States.
The best way to get to Natchitoches, Louisiana for their famous Christmas Festival of Lights is by flying into Shreveport, which is an hour and 15 minutes north of the city. Once you’re in this festive city, it is best to stay at the charming Perrault House which is also found on Vrbo! It’s only a five-minute drive (and 20-minute walk) to all the Christmas festivities in downtown Natchitoches and features a luxurious, renovated space; cozy porch and saltwater pool.
Overall, Natchitoches, LA is one of the best warm weather December getaways in the USA! Temperatures range from the high 70s (during the day), to low 40s (at night) during the Christmas season. It is best to bring warm clothing as well as light jackets and boots when you visit this jolly Christmas festival.
The best things to do in Natchitoches, Louisiana are to take a Christmas Tour of Homes in historic downtown; admire all the Christmas lights and decoration along the city’s Front Street (where all of the shops, restaurants, cafés and bars are located); make memories at Cookies with Santa at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; watch the Lighted Boat Parade along the Cane River; see the incredible Christmas fireworks show over the river every Saturday through New Year’s Eve; visit Melrose Plantation and enjoy all the live music and performances in the downtown area.

Wow, this was a great guide on some awesome US states to visit during Christmas time. It seems that it is not necessary to go to the European markets, when you have them here in the states. Really beautiful Chritmas markets and wonderful places to visit in December during the holiday season ~ what a great guide and read. Loved all the beautiful photos too! Love you, mom xoxo 👩🏻🤎
