The Bavarian-style city of Frankenmuth, Michigan is another one of the best December getaways in the USA! In fact, Frankenmuth is known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria” and is magical to visit at Christmas. The entire town is lit up and full of festive activities to enjoy.

Want to ring in the holiday season by visiting the world’s largest Christmas store? Bronner’s is in Frankenmuth, MI and has every decorative Christmas item you can imagine! Even if you don’t need to buy anything, it is worth exploring this 2.2.-acre winter wonderland that is open year-round.

In addition, Frankenmuth has an outdoor ice-skating rink that is open to the public during the winter. Main Street has great shops and cafés to enjoy as well. Everything is decked out so warm and festive during the holiday season!

You can’t miss seeing the Glockenspiel Tower at the famous Bavarian Inn Restaurant. It contains a 35-bell carillon and figurines that are all imported from Germany. The Glockenspiel plays every day at noon, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm. It’s worth seeing before enjoying a nice German meal in the restaurant.

When in Frankenmuth, there is no better place to stay than at the Bavarian Inn! It’s a charming, European-themed hotel with lovely rooms and a cozy atmosphere. It will make you feel like you’re right in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany!

The best way to get to Frankenmuth is by car and you can park for free in the large lot behind the River Place Shops or at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Aside from Bronner’s, which is a little outside of Frankenmuth, most of the holiday attractions in town are within walking distance.

When it comes to the weather in Michigan, Frankenmuth is usually cold and snowy in December. Expect temperatures to range between high 30s to low 20s Fahrenheit during the holiday season. It’s not always a white Christmas in Frankenmuth, MI, but chances can be high!

Mammoth Lakes, California:

If you’re looking for a snowy mountain getaway this Christmas, look no further than Mammoth Lakes, California. It’s nestled in the eastern Sierra Nevada’s and is filled with rustic charm, making it one of the most spectacular and unique December getaways in the USA.

Thanks to its high elevation, Mammoth Lakes is quite cool in December, with daily highs that are usually in the upper 20’s Fahrenheit. There is also a decent chance of snow, making it perfect for a white Christmas!

What makes Mammoth one of the best places to visit in winter is because it’s renowned for its world-class ski resorts, including Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain! If you’re not a skier or snowboarder, there’s plenty of other winter activities to enjoy such as 19 miles of Nordic skiing trails at the Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center or the eye-popping 140 miles of snowshoeing trails in the nearby Inyo National Forest.

After all that exercise, be sure to get extra cozy in one of the many natural hot springs that are sprinkled throughout the area. A great spot is Wild Willy’s Hot Spring, where you can find your own personal natural hot tub. It’s the best place to relax and soak in all the jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Sierra’s.

While the town’s natural features lend itself as the perfect wintery destination to enjoy Christmas, downtown Mammoth Lakes has planned Christmas activities that will kick it up a notch.

The Village at Mammoth, one of the main outdoor shopping centers in town, is decorated with countless twinkling lights throughout the holiday season and hosts a fun and festive celebration the weekend after Thanksgiving. During these annual festivities, there’s a tree lighting ceremony and a special appearance by Santa Claus!

Once you’ve soaked up as much Christmas cheer as possible, spend the evening at the Juniper Springs Resort, which offers ski-in, ski-out access, heated outdoor pools and in-suite fireplaces.

While you can get to the ski resorts, the town’s hotels and the downtown area with the town’s public transit, it’s best to have a car if you want to explore Mammoth Lakes’ off the beaten path adventures.

One of the best December getaways in the USA is Helen, Georgia! Helen is a small mountain town that is located besides a river. It’s 85 miles northeast of Atlanta! Due to its unique Bavarian architecture and colorful buildings, it has a special charm that has made it one of the most popular Christmas destinations in America.

The entire town of Helen is walkable and most activities can be found in a central square that is located on Main Street. In December, the annual Helen Christmas parade marches down this street and a giant Christmas tree sits out front to bring cheer to the village.

At the beginning of the season, Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive for a special Lighting of the Village event and children have the chance to meet the beloved couple or take a photo with them!

What’s also special about Helen during the holiday season is that it boasts an annual German Christkindlmarkt that runs for two weekends every year. It’s a great spot to shop for holiday treats, Christmas décor and handmade gifts that are made by local artisans.

When you get hungry, head to one of the riverfront restaurants for authentic German food! Troll Tavern decorates their outdoor patio with twinkling Christmas lights and it’s one of the prettiest places you can eat outdoors!

Helen’s weather in December is rather mild, with daily temperatures between 45° to 55° Fahrenheit, so you can remain comfortable outside with just a light sweater or jacket!

California does not only consist of gorgeous beaches and palm trees, but the Golden State also has so much more to offer from centennial trees and deserts to world renowned ski resorts and beautiful snowy mountain peaks! There is also a special area that should be considered as a fun Christmas destination – Lake Tahoe!

Texas Hill Country:

Christmas in the Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country is made up of several small, charming towns that each offer magical and festive activities for the holidays! The weather is mild and pleasant in the 60’s Fahrenheit with plenty of things to do, both indoors and outdoors, making it one of the most fun December getaways in the USA.

Visitors to the Texas Hill Country can fly into Austin, which serves as a gateway to Hill Country. Travelers can also fly into San Antonio! You can base yourself in one place or hop around on a road trip along the scenic routes of these Hill Country treasures! A rental car is necessary for exploring the Texas Hill Country.

Fredericksburg is one of the most well-known towns in Hill Country for its numerous wineries and deep history. The town’s German roots come especially alive during the holidays when the downtown Marketplatz is transformed by the 30ft Christmas tree and 26ft German Christmas pyramid.

Light and music shows take place every evening in Fredericksburg and there is also an outdoor ice-skating rink! In addition, Main Street is festively decorated from end to end, offering the opportunity for a magical stroll as well as plenty of holiday shopping opportunities.

Altdorf Biergarten and Eaker BBQ are great spots for dinner and the Hoffman Ranch Haus is a gorgeous bed and breakfast to stay at during the month of December!

On the way to Fredericksburg from Austin, it is well worth your time to visit a few smaller towns to experience the quaint and magical streets and events. The town of Wimberley is a true hidden gem with a Trail of Lights winding through the forest and marshmallows roasting at the Yule Log there.

Johnson City, known as the Twinkliest Town in Texas, offers an experience of two million lights completed with horse drawn carriage tours. Luckenbach is a tiny town worth a stop to see the U.S. Post Office from 1850 and you must also catch a live music show too!

San Antonio also can’t be beat with its Riverwalk decked out in lights, nightly boat rides and more. You can also bike the Mission Trail and visit the Christmas tree in front of the Alamo.

Tamales are a staple during Christmastime, so don’t miss Adelita Tamales & Tortilla Factory during your time in this beautiful city! In addition, staying along the Riverwalk is a must for making the most of the season and Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is a great choice.

Nashville, Tennessee:

One of the best December getaways in the USA - Nashville, Tennessee

Another one of the best December getaways in the USA is Nashville, Tennessee! The Music City during the holidays provides a lot of fun and unique experiences.

During the month of December, the weather in Nashville is an average high of 52° Fahrenheit with a nighttime low in the 30’s Fahrenheit. You can easily get around town without a car through taking ride sharing apps.

One of the most decorated hotels during the holidays is The Graduate Nashville. It’s a funky country music themed hotel located in Midtown and features a Dolly Parton themed rooftop bar called White Limozeen.

During Christmastime in Nashville, you must visit the Honky-tonks on Broadway, the Country Music Hall of Fame or Studio 2B, where Elvis himself recorded many songs! Don’t forget to also check out the Bluebird Café for the most authentic live music experience in town.

The best Christmas things to do in Nashville include a visit to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, which turns into a winter wonderland in December! The indoor atrium is decorated to the nines with lights and poinsettias. You can also wander the gardens for hours and still not see it all! Also, venture outside for hot chocolate, a nativity scene and a fun ice rink!

Make sure to also check out one of the pop-up Christmas bars that are around the city. They are usually themed and extravagant. (There was a Home Alone bar one year!) Be sure to book reservations far in advance or you won’t get in.

For a last-minute cozy activity, head over to the Bobby Hotel for specialty holiday drinks that you can enjoy in igloos. There is also a bus that sits up on the roof!

Lastly, book a ticket to the General Jackson Showboat for a delicious and festive holiday dinner along with live music! You can also enjoy their New Year’s Eve show while admiring the Nashville skyline.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

Christmas lights in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Another one of the best places to visit in winter is Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Overall, the city of Milwaukee is a winter wonderland during December and the weather is usually between the 30’s and 20’s Fahrenheit.

During the holiday season, Milwaukee gets cozy and lively! The horse-drawn carriage rides in the city are unmatchable. You must also enjoy ice skating, which is one of the best things to do in Milwaukee with kids.

Telluride, Colorado:

Colorado in a winter wonderland

Located in the heart of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Telluride makes for a perfect Christmas destination and one of the best December getaways in the USA.

Telluride, CO is a small town that sits in the remote part of the state and away from the major travel route. While it offers plenty of charm and history, it lacks the crowds of big vacation destinations like Breckenridge, Aspen or Vail.

Telluride is famous for its ski slopes, which remain refreshingly uncrowded compared to many popular ski destinations in Colorado and within the Rocky Mountains. To get to Telluride, Colorado, you can either catch a flight from Denver International Airport or rent a car in Denver. It takes 6 hours to drive through the state before getting there.

December averages just over 26 inches of snowfall, which makes it perfect for winter activities like skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. It can also get cold as temperatures range from a high of 35° Fahrenheit to a low of 5° Fahrenheit, so make sure to dress warm!

Another fun winter activity in Telluride is fat biking. The area has dozens of trails, many of which can be explored during a winter wonderland. The good news is that you don’t have to go too far to enjoy it! Some of the best fat biking trails are Bear Creek Falls and Jurassic Trail.

Telluride also has a rich mining history and is surrounded by several ghost towns, which are fun to visit, and you can see them by renting a snowmobile!

If you want to experience something unique beyond a classic winter getaway, try ice climbing! It’s one of the most challenging activities in Telluride! Mountain Trip runs the best ice climbing tours if you want to give this fun adventure a try!

Anchorage, Alaska:

Sleigh riding in Alaska

Few people consider Alaska when planning USA December getaways for Christmas, but the magic of the holidays in the largest and most northern state is something everyone should experience at least once!

For those who don’t like the bitter cold, Anchorage, AK is the perfect city for you to visit during Christmastime. The average temperature in December is in the 20’s Fahrenheit, but it can get down to the teens. There is also a chance of seeing the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in Alaska, which makes it extra special!

Anchorage lights up for the holidays and boasts numerous events around town to celebrate. For those who arrive in advance of Christmas, there is a spectacular holiday market in the middle of the month!

If you enjoy winter sports, you’re in for a real treat when you travel to Anchorage! Snow comes early in Alaska, so Alyeska Ski Resort is the best place to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

The best place to stay in Anchorage, and the perfect location to watch the Northern Lights, is at the Loft in the Clouds! The decks on every level, including its expansive roof deck, is the perfect setting for aurora hunters!

Orlando, Florida:

Photo by Christine of Live Love Run Travel.

If you are looking for a warm Christmas destination, look no further than Orlando, Florida. It’s one of the most magical December getaways in the USA! There are plenty of things to do in Orlando at Christmas without needing to pack all of your winter gear.

The theme parks go all out for the holidays with stunning decor and exciting events. However, you can also enjoy walking through the Disney hotels and Disney Springs without having to pay the park entry fees. Disney Springs has a festive tree trail with each tree themed to a different Disney movie or character while the Grand Floridian goes all out with a massive Christmas tree and gingerbread house.

Disney Springs also offers tons of options for dining and dessert lovers won’t want to miss Gideon’s Bakehouse. You’ll also find plenty of hotels options near the parks if the Grand Floridian or other Disney hotels are out of your budget.

Many of the communities surrounding Orlando also have Christmas events featuring outdoor movies, Santa Claus, Christmas lights and even ice skating rinks as well as Florida “snow”. Winter Park is one of the best towns for Christmas events with several throughout December. You can also take a day trip over to Cocoa Beach to see the skydiving Santas at the Cocoa Beach Pier.

Perhaps the best part of Christmas in Orlando is the weather. If you visit near Christmas, you are likely to miss the humidity and daily rain Orlando experiences in the summer. With highs in the 70s and 80s most days and lows in the 50s, you can get by with a light jacket to keep you warm.

When visiting Orlando, because of how spread out things are, your best bet is to rent a car or use a ride sharing app. Orlando’s public transportation is not as good as in many large cities, so unless you are staying at the parks and only visiting the parks, you’ll probably need a car to get around. Some hotels in the more touristy areas will have shuttles to popular spots, but you will be on your own to get to other places.

Add Orlando at Christmas to your USA Christmas destinations bucket list, and you won’t be disappointed!

It’s only a five-minute drive (and 20-minute walk) to all the Christmas festivities in downtown Natchitoches and features a luxurious, renovated space; cozy porch and saltwater pool.

Overall, Natchitoches, LA is one of the best warm weather December getaways in the USA! Temperatures range from the high 70s (during the day), to low 40s (at night) during the Christmas season. It is best to bring warm clothing as well as light jackets and boots when you visit this jolly Christmas festival.

The best things to do in Natchitoches, Louisiana are to take a Christmas Tour of Homes in historic downtown; admire all the Christmas lights and decoration along the city’s Front Street (where all of the shops, restaurants, cafés and bars are located); make memories at Cookies with Santa at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; watch the Lighted Boat Parade along the Cane River; see the incredible Christmas fireworks show over the river every Saturday through New Year’s Eve; visit Melrose Plantation and enjoy all the live music and performances in the downtown area.

There is no better place to celebrate Christmas in the USA than in Chicago. The weather can be chilly in the Windy City, ranging from high 30’s to mid 20’s Fahrenheit. December in Chicago can also draw a lot of rain.

On the bright side, Chicago’s holiday magic will leave you feeling jolly! What’s nice about big cities like Chicago is that you don’t need a car as you can easily get around by bus or using the L train to enjoy Christmas events like The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. It’s a merry, annual festival that takes place on the Magnificent Mile (Chicago’s premier commercial district).

During the holiday season, Milwaukee gets cozy and lively! The horse-drawn carriage rides in the city are unmatchable. You must also enjoy ice skating, which is one of the best things to do in Milwaukee with kids.

You can also experience a romantic snowy walk with your partner along the lakeside! The frosted scenery allows you to enjoy the calm aura of the vibrant city. In fact, it’s what makes it one of the best December getaways in the USA.

In addition, you must visit the Historic Third Ward, which is the most famous warehouse districts in the country. It has so much to offer from decorations to art venues and galleries!

One of the coziest places to enjoy during Christmastime in Milwaukee is Alderaan Coffee. Other great places to eat are at Blue’s Egg or Oggie’s Kitchen & Bar for breakfast or brunch and Lake Park Bistro or Ardent Restaurant for lunch and dinner.

The best way to get around the city of Milwaukee is by taking the Hop Streetcar and awesome places to stay are at the Iron Horse Hotel and Pfister Hotel.

During a trip to Anchorage in December, you can also enjoy Nordic skiing, ice climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and more. Make sure to rent a car with four-wheel drive to be able to enjoy everything the area has to offer in the winter months!

For a delicious meal in Anchorage, be sure to try Ray’s Place for mouthwatering Vietnamese dishes. The city also boasts a lot of great breweries too!

Orlando, Florida:

Natchitoches, Louisiana:

Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana

Located along the Cane River in Louisiana, Natchitoches (pronounced at nah kuh tuhsh) boasts the oldest community-based holiday celebrations in the United States.

The best way to get to Natchitoches, Louisiana for their famous Christmas Festival of Lights is by flying into Shreveport, which is an hour and 15 minutes north of the city. Once you’re in this festive city, it is best to stay at the charming Perrault House which is also found on Vrbo!

Wow, this was a great guide on some awesome US states to visit during Christmas time. It seems that it is not necessary to go to the European markets, when you have them here in the states. Really beautiful Chritmas markets and wonderful places to visit in December during the holiday season ~ what a great guide and read. Loved all the beautiful photos too! Love you, mom xoxo 👩🏻🤎
