One of the top things to add to your travel bucket list is experiencing a luxury safari in the Serengeti of Tanzania, Africa. It’s one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth, dating to prehistoric times. The Serengeti is a breathtaking part of East Africa and one of the best places to stay in safari camps, lodges and hotels.

The Serengeti became a National Park in 1940, is one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Serengeti got its name from the Maasai word siringit, which means “endless plains.” It is over 12,000 square miles (30,000 square kilometers).

A sunset in Serengeti National Park.

Serengeti National Park is unique because it boasts the Great Migration every year from July through October, the best months to travel there. Regarding weather and climate, the Serengeti’s primary dry season is from May to August, which is winter in Tanzania. It was also dry and warmer in September and October when I was there. The rainy, wet season is from November to April, the area’s summertime.

As featured in National Geographic, the Great Migration is a journey where safari animals migrate from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara and vice versa. It’s the largest overland migration in the world, where more than 1.7 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra and 200,000 antelope migrate over 500 miles (800 kilometers).

The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park.

I experienced a luxury safari in the Serengeti after my Kilimanjaro trek in early October 2022. I traveled to Serengeti National Park with Caitlin of My Darling Passport and we stayed at one of the best luxury safari lodges in the Serengeti – the Four Seasons!

One of the best ways to experience Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is by enjoying a luxury safari experience at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. In this article, discover how to have the best time at one of the most exquisite Serengeti lodges.

Best Luxury Safari in the Serengeti

Traveling to Serengeti National Park:

Elephants in the Serengeti.

The Four Seasons is in Central Serengeti. Getting to Four Seasons Safari Lodge can easily be done by taking domestic and international flights into the Seronera Airstrip (SEU) from Arusha Airport (ARK), Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

The Seronera Airstrip is a 45-minute drive from the resort, so you must arrange transportation in advance. The airlines that fly into Seronera Airstrip, which you can book your flights through, are Air Excel, Coastal Aviation, Regional Air, Northern Air and Auric Air. Please be mindful of how much luggage you take on these local airlines. Most luggage is limited to 33 lbs. (15 kg), and hard-shell cases are usually not allowed.

Staying at a luxury safari lodge in the Serengeti after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Since Caitlin and I had just completed climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, we had many bags with us, so it was easiest to hire a private driver to take us from Arusha to the Four Seasons. We chose our private driver through Galloping Safaris LTD. They also took us from the safari lodge to the airport in Nairobi since that was the airport we flew out of to go to Mauritius. (There are no flights to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, to Seronera Airstrip.) Altogether, our private ground transfer costs $900 USD for two people.

You can rent a car to get around Africa. Still, self-driving can be challenging, especially in Serengeti National Park, as road conditions are poor and accidents have resulted in injury or death. You can also find affordable flights around Tanzania and Africa, in general, using Skyscanner. No matter what, it’s always best to make travel plans ahead of time when visiting the Serengeti.

Best Luxury Safari Lodge in the Serengeti:

A woman enjoying one of the best luxury safari experiences at Four Seasons Serengeti.

One of the best hotels in Tanzania’s Serengeti for luxury and adventure is the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. This exclusive lodge is in a remote location, next to an animal watering hole, where you can watch a family of elephants hydrate. The luxury safari lodge also overlooks the endless Serengeti plains!

Four Seasons Serengeti is the perfect place to stay for a honeymoon, family vacation, girl’s trip or even a solo adventure! From the best game drives to the dining scene and the beautiful rooms to the infinity pool that overlooks the watering hole, you will have the ultimate luxury safari experience in the Serengeti.

The beautiful property of Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.

Another reason why I loved staying at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti was because of its spa. You can enjoy different massages, body treatments, facials, manicures/pedicures and more in an open-air environment. The spa at the Four Seasons uses indigenous ingredients and African healing rituals that nourish your soul.

Since I traveled to the Serengeti after my Kilimanjaro trek, a massage was everything my body and soul needed!

Best Accommodation in Serengeti National Park:

A hotel room at Four Seasons Serengeti.

One of my favorite parts about staying at Four Seasons Serengeti was the spacious accommodations that offered scenic views of the savannah and a watering hole. During our time at the Four Seasons, Caitlin and I stayed in the Horizon Room with Waterhole View, and it was amazing!

Our room consisted of two twin beds with a private canopy, a walk-in closet, and a spacious bathroom with a separate soaking tub and rain shower. I loved how our room had contemporary African décor and we were also given some treats during our stay.

A sunset in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Africa.

The best parts of our stay were enjoying beautiful sunsets on our private terrace which included a grass roof and seeing the giraffes hang out from the bathtub. Four Seasons Serengeti has infrared cameras that will notify you in your hotel room when animals are approaching the watering hole. In addition to the Horizon Rooms, there are also the Savannah Rooms.

Additionally, this luxury safari lodge in the Serengeti has stylish suites that include a master ensuite bedroom and a large lounge area with private plunge pools that overlook the savannah. This resort also has residential-style villas, perfect for larger groups. The villas as the Four Seasons boast infinity-edge plunge pools and incredible terraces with the best views of the plains and acacia trees.

Dining at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti:

Breakfast at Four Seasons Serengeti.

Another reason why Four Seasons is one of the best luxury Serengeti lodges is because of its fine dining scene. From authentic African feasts to international cuisine, there are plenty of gourmet cuisines to savor at Four Seasons Serengeti.

Caitlin and I enjoyed a wonderful African feast at Boma Grill on our first night. What is great about this restaurant is that there is an open-air firepit and a performance area where you can enjoy a show and immerse yourself in Maasai culture. It’s such an incredible experience!

Having dinner at the best luxury safari lodge in the Serengeti.

The bread served at this restaurant was delicious and we also savored the Masala, which consisted of calamari, coconut chutney, avocado and paprika aioli. I had roasted chicken with local herbs and marinade for my main meal. Everything was delicious and went well with an excellent South African Cabernet Sauvignon.

Breakfast at Four Seasons Serengeti is served at Kula’s Restaurant every morning. The breakfast buffet is fantastic! You can enjoy tropical juices and smoothies, fresh fruit, croissants and pastries, homemade waffles, eggs, breakfast meats, traditional African dishes and more. In the evening, wonderful meals are served at this spot and one of my favorites was the pumpkin ravioli.

During the day, I loved having lunch, small bites and poolside drinks at Maji Bar and Terrace at this luxury safari hotel in the Serengeti. You can enjoy Japanese fried chicken, satays, fresh salads, homemade pizza, sandwiches and wraps at this spot. We ate at this restaurant on our third night and I savored the mushroom truffle risotto as my main meal and profiteroles for dessert, which were delicious!

Profiteroles from Four Seasons Serengeti.

Not only does this exclusive lodge have wonderful restaurants onsite, but you can also book a wilderness adventure with a dinner in the bush along with a family poolside barbecue on the wooden decks. You can also organize a seven-course dinner in the resort’s wine cellar.

The Best Luxury Safari Experience in Serengeti National Park:

Elephants during the Great Migration in the Serengeti.

As I mentioned above, the time of the year I traveled to the Serengeti was during the annual Migration. This is one of the best areas to see the Great Migration and you can experience it with the Four Seasons’ luxury safari through the Serengeti.

From a half-day game drive to a full-day game drive and morning safari rides to night drives, there are many incredible ways to explore the Serengeti and see the Great Migration!

A cheetah from the Serengeti.
A leopard eating during a luxury safari game drive in the Serengeti.

During a safari game drive, the goal is to see the big five game: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and African buffalo. During my safari, I saw 4/5 because spotting the rhino in the Serengeti is hard. The other animals I saw on my luxury safari drive in Serengeti National Park were zebras, lions, elephants, giraffes, African buffalo, gazelles, topi, hyenas, monkeys, various bird species, hippos, wildebeest, cheetahs, leopards and more.

Caitlin and I did a morning and sunset safari adventure in the Serengeti. Four Seasons provided us with water, beer, cookies, fresh fruit and more. They also offer packed lunches and special packages for occasions like an engagement, honeymoons, family adventures, etc.

Lions in Serengeti National Park
The African Buffalo

After the rainy season, you can catch the Great Wildebeest Migration from late May through early July. Thousands of wildebeest are completing their river crossings through the Mara River of Northern Serengeti. The Migration’s primary route is from Southern Serengeti through the Western Corridor of the National Park into the Maasai Mara. It’s a beautiful site to see!

During a game drive with the best Tanzania safari experience, a Maasai guide will lead you through the Serengeti with expert local knowledge. They will also help you spot different wildlife on your safari experience. I loved seeing all the animals, but my favorites were the giraffes, lions, zebras, cheetahs, elephants and leopards.

Four Seasons Safari 4x4
A woman enjoying a luxury safari experience in the Serengeti.

The luxury safari vehicles that Four Seasons Serengeti uses are great for wildlife viewing. There are windows all around and the hood of the 4×4 pops open so you can experience more epic encounters with nature. You can enjoy daily game drives, whether that be private or shared.

The hippos in Africa.
Topi in Tanzania.

Please note that you can still visit Serengeti National Park during the rainy season and experience a luxury safari. Four Seasons has game drives from late December to early April. February is birthing season for wildebeest, which is also fantastic to see!

Exploring Ngorongoro Crater:

A rhino in Ngorongoro Crater.

Another epic thing to do when staying at the best luxury safari lodge in the Serengeti is to explore Ngorongoro Crater. It’s the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera.

What is remarkable about a safari ride through Ngorongoro Conservation Area is that you have a greater chance of seeing the black rhino to complete your big five explorations! During an adventure with the Four Seasons, you’ll ride through the Serengeti Plains, see traditional Maasai villages and make your way onto the Olduvai Gorge. It’s one of the most incredible things to experience!

A cool fact about Ngorongoro Crater is that it was once a giant volcano. Before it erupted, it would’ve been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, making it the highest peak in Africa!

You can spot the big five in the crater, along with over 500 bird species. There are many animals in Ngorongoro Crater because a lot of them became trapped there and the population of different creatures populated and multiplied. One animal you won’t find in the crater is the giraffe because of the steep descent; you will find them surrounding the conservation area, however.

Enjoying a Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride over the Serengeti:

Hot air balloons.

One of the most memorable and romantic things to do during a luxury safari trip is to take a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti plains during sunset.

Four Seasons Serengeti organizes memorable experiences for all occasions. You can enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride over this breathtaking part of the world, year-round. The staff at Four Seasons Serengeti will ensure you have the most spectacular, one-hour experience and set up a lovely Champagne breakfast in the bush afterward.

This is a wonderful opportunity for an engagement proposal as well as to take incredible photographs. You can also spot numerous wildlife roaming the savannah from a distance!
