Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Killarney, the land of sparkling green hills, rainbows and beautiful Irish farm life. The area of Killarney, Ireland is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I seriously thought I was in a dream in this gorgeous region.

During October 2017, I traveled to Ireland with SitInMySeats Travel. From the moment I landed in “The Emerald Isle” I was in awe. I was exposed to the greenest nature I’ve ever seen, fresh Atlantic air and there was overall happiness.

Throughout my 10 days in Ireland, I had a blast in the capital city of Dublin and meandering around the beautiful fishing villages surrounding that area; chasing rainbows in scenic Killarney, Cliffs of Moher and Galway and experiencing a taste of royalty at Ashford Castle in the rural village of Cong. In this blog post, dance with me along the yellow brick road to Ireland’s “Land of Oz” (aka Killarney).

Where to Stay in Killarney:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Ireland was definitely a luxury trip for me since I traveled with SitInMySeats – a luxury travel agency. Even though we traveled around the country, we stayed at five-star hotels in Dublin, Killarney and Cong and they were all amazing! During our few nights in Killarney, we stayed at The Killarney Park Hotel located in the heart of Killarney’s town center.

I absolutely LOVED staying at The Killarney Park Hotel because it was absolutely beautiful and elegant. My cousin Alexie and I shared a room that was way more luxurious than anything I’ve ever stayed in before. As you walked into the room, there was a little hallway that had a big bathroom, closet and then there were two doors that led into our room. Inside of our hotel room was a fireplace, seating area and two king beds. It was amazing! I liked how conveniently located the hotel was to all of the restaurants and bars in downtown Killarney and they also welcomed us with a complementary glass of Champagne when we checked in.

In addition to The Killarney Park Hotel, you could find a plethora of other luxury, mid-budget and budget hotels in the Killarney area using Hotels.com. There is also a wide range of Airbnb options as well.

Traveling to and Around Ireland:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Nowadays, there are so many great ways to find affordable flights. I love using Skyscanner to get the best for my buck! From New York Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, New York, I flew directly to Dublin where I spent a few days there.

Since I traveled with a group, we took a private coach around Ireland, but other ways to get around is by renting a car or journeying with the Bus Eireann.

Things to Do:

Kiss the Blarney Stone:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Located in Cork is the infamous Blarney Stone! Known to be the “germiest” place in the world, Irish folklore has it that kissing a block of carboniferous limestone will give you everlasting eloquence.

Even though I personally didn’t kiss the Blarney Stone, it is still a cool experience if you are in County Cork.

Stroll around Midleton:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Midleton is a quaint city lined with colorful buildings, ivy-filled stonewalls, friendly faces and overall charm.

Since it was lunchtime when we arrived in Midleton, we went to Sage, a farm-to-table restaurant located in a beautifully remote spot off of the main street. When we walked inside, the restaurant was filled with sunshine and offered a welcoming ambiance. There were flowers and candles located throughout the main dining room and the menu looked absolutely delicious! One of the cool things with farm-to-table restaurants like Sage is that the menu always reflects the season. This allows the restaurant to work with local producers and growers.

Visit Jameson Distillery:

After our delicious lunch at Sage, we walked down the main street of Midleton to the world-famous Jameson Distillery. When we first arrived at Jameson Distillery, I couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was! The Distillery has a huge campus that features beautiful bluestone buildings with clay shutters and an Industrial-era vibe. Unlike most tourism places, the souvenir shop is the first building you enter when you do the Jameson Experience.

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

The actual Jameson Experience is a guided tour, which brings the stories of Jameson’s rich heritage to life. In addition, we learned about the hard working individuals and field-to-glass processes that are responsible for the high quality whiskey that bears in John Jameson’s name. As we learned about the history, we also got to go into the old distillery buildings. I loved the architecture to these buildings!

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

When the tour ended, we went into the tasting room where we tried five different whiskeys. Like I have said in my previous blog posts from Dublin and Nashville, I am not the biggest whiskey drinker, but I do like to participate in the tastings and Jameson is known to be one of the world’s best whiskey.

Killarney:

Enjoy Downtown Killarney:

Downtown Killarney has so many wonderful restaurants, cafés and pubs. Below is everywhere we ate and drank at during our time in Killarney:

Killarney Park Hotel:

The restaurant in our hotel was absolutely amazing! During our first night, we enjoyed a nice lobster dinner with French fries and veggies on the side. This was by far one of my favorite meals in Ireland.

The Grand:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

The Grand is the perfect place to get the true Irish pub experience. Since Killarney is a small city, there were a lot of locals hanging out and having fun during the night we went.

A little after we arrived, an AWESOME cover band started to play on the little stage they had there. They were playing current and classic rock as well as fun Irish music that we all had a great time dancing to. In addition, The Grand also has a hidden nightclub/lounge in the back of the pub.

Pink Lounge (Ross Hotel):

During one of our evenings in Killarney, we enjoyed cocktail hour at the super chic Pink Lounge located in the Ross Hotel. This fun bar is a gin and champagne lounge that has every girl dreaming to be there. The Pink Lounge also has a restaurant downstairs that offers crafted meals that anyone will enjoy.

The Ring of Kerry:

Go Back in Time at Bog Village:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

My second day in Killarney was nothing but magical. We hopped on the bus early in the morning that took us into the beautiful Irish countryside. We stopped in the town of Kerry at a historical park called Bog Village for an Irish or Bailey’s coffee and soda bread.

After we fueled up, we went into the cute little village that provided us a fascinating insight into how people lived and worked in Ireland during the 18th century. At Bog Village, you can go into each cottage and learn about the bog (a wetland that accumulates a deposit of dead plant materials such as moss), wildlife and equipment used to extract the turf. It was really interesting!

Experience Kells Sheepdog Display:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

One of the coolest experiences during my time in Ireland was visiting Kells Sheepdog Display. The owner of Kells trains Border Collies to herd sheep. He uses a special kind of whistle and a few words and sounds for the dogs to hear so they could swiftly round up the herd. The dogs did a great job directing the sheep and vice versa. A dog is considered a “predator” to the sheep, so the direction the dogs move plays a huge role in where the sheep go.

At the end of the demonstration, the trainer got both the sheep and dogs close to us so we can pet them. Watching this demonstration along the beautiful bright green hills of Kerry was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I recommend it to everyone who travels to Ireland.

After the sheepdog demonstration, we walked through the Irish wool shop attached where we could purchase warm sweaters, jackets, blankets and more! When we were finished, we went across the street where we took in the beautiful scenery of the Atlantic Ocean from the cliffs. It was magnificent!

Savor the Seaside Views at Portmagee:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

As we drove from Kells Sheepdog Display to Portmagee, we made our way through wonderful backcountry roads, passed over the highest mountains in Ireland and saw more rainbows in the valleys.

When we finally reached the picturesque village of Portmagee, we were ready for a nice hearty lunch. This colorful area is known for its charming town, spectacular scenery, lively music, fresh seafood and the iconic Disney animal – the puffin!

During our time in Portmagee, we enjoyed lunch at The Moorings & Bridge Bar. When we got inside, we not only warmed up from the nautical ambiance of the pub, but the owners were just as welcoming. Since Portmagee is known for its seafood, I enjoyed a SUPER delicious seafood chowder that had mussels, lobster meat, salmon and other fresh herbs in it. It was delicious!

See Skellig Rock:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

Our next adventure through the Ring of Kerry brought us to the top of a mountain that featured an overlook of the famous Skellig Rock. A fun fact about Skellig Rock is that in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker had his hideout there, where the Jedis built one of their temples. (How cool!) The other side of the overlook featured more beautiful hills and valleys, cute sheep and beautiful blue water from the distance. It was so awesome!

In addition, it was very windy in this area and there were overwhelming cliffs and great ruins. It was so beautiful!

Adventure through Killarney National Park:

Explore the Magic of Killarney, Ireland (With a Pit Stop in County Cork)

The drive through Killarney National Park was absolutely breathtaking! There were rainbows, beautiful trees (that reminded me of the pictures I’ve seen of the Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland) as well as gorgeous mountains.

In Killarney National Park, you could go hiking, take a horse and carriage ride and more!
