How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Mykonos is Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island and also one of the most party-centric destinations in the world. If you are someone who likes to have a good time or even if you are someone who likes to relax and rage here and there, then there is no doubt that Mykonos is for you!

The island of Mykonos features a whitewashed paradise, pristine beaches, glistening waters, amazing cuisines, picturesque villages and a lot of history. You could also catch celebrities roaming the glamorous street, Matoyánni, lined with high-end boutiques and restaurants. In addition, the dazzling beaches attract all types of travelers from the 20-something partygoer to the 30-something couple who is honeymooning. You will also find a lot of families vacationing in Mykonos as well as a lot of solo travelers. Mykonos is the perfect island for all to enjoy!

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

During my time in Greece, Mykonos was our last stop before we sailed back to Athens to fly home. There are plenty of ways you could fit Mykonos into your vacation itinerary, but I believe it is the perfect ending spot to the Greek islands because it will allow you to round up your trip with a bang!

Below, discover everything you must do if you are looking to have fun in Mykonos:

Transportation to Mykonos:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Getting to Mykonos: As I mentioned in my blog post from Paros, the best way to get from island to island in Greece is by taking the ferry. There are a plethora of ferries that run throughout the day and it usually takes anywhere from a half hour to a few hours to get from each island. While you are on the ferry, there are areas where you could leave your luggage based on where you are going. There is also a bar where you could order food and drinks.

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Traveling on Mykonos Island: When you finally reach Mykonos, there is a plethora of transportation options for you to choose from. The bus is the most economical way to get around the island. For less than two euro, you can take the bus pretty much everywhere on the island. The only downside is that it could take a while for you to get to your destination due to the amount of stops. Another great option to get around Mykonos is by taking a water taxi. It is the perfect way to beach hop, but please keep in mind that they don’t run as frequently as the bus! If you want to get around Mykonos in a fun fashion, it is recommended that you rent an ATV or scooter. If you decide to rent a scooter or ATV, please be extra careful as the roads in Mykonos are windy and bumpy. They could also get crowded during the summer months when tourism is at an all-time high.

(Please also take note that if you are planning to party, DO NOT rent an ATV, scooter or car in Mykonos! It is best that you take public transportation such as the bus, water taxi and even a regular taxi.)

Where to Stay in Mykonos:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

As I mention above, Mykonos is great because there is something for everyone! Depending on your purpose for traveling to Mykonos, there are numerous areas to stay in. You could either stay at hotels and resorts, rent an Airbnb or HomeAway or even stay in a hostel.

For the Partygoers:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos
  • Paradise Beach: If you are traveling to Mykonos to party, it is highly recommended that you stay on the premises of Paradise Beach like I did. This resort has two clubs to choose from and is a short walk to the beach! Please note though that if you are looking to stay in a luxury accommodation, this is NOT the place for you. In addition to the resort, there are also campsites at Paradise Beach as well.
  • Mykonos Town: The charming town of Mykonos, also known as Hora/Chora, is densely packed with guesthouses, hotels, restaurants and bars. If you are looking to spend your time in a nice place that isn’t too far from the party scene, then staying in Mykonos Town is the better option of the two.

For Families:

  • Ornos: Known as one of the busiest beaches on Mykonos, Ornos features boutique hotels and guesthouses as well as beautiful white sand beaches. If you have young children, the bay nearby offers shallow and calm waters for them to play in.
  • Platys Gialos: If you are looking for an amazing beach with a mix of restaurants, low-key nightlife and beautiful hotels, then Platys Gialos is the perfect place. The water is shallow for young children and there are also a variety of water sports to partake in.

For Honeymooners:

  • Agios Ioannis: As Mykonos’ best sunset-watching spot, Agios Ioannis is the perfect romantic spot on the island. In addition, there are countless hidden beaches and quiet locations that are perfect for honeymooners looking to escape the party scene.
  • Psarou: Known as a favorite to honeymooners, Psarou offers teal waters and end-to-end rows of sun loungers. There are also many scenic and renowned restaurants for people to enjoy a romantic dinner with a view.

Now, Back to the Party:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Since Mykonos is primarily known for its beach parties during the day and nightclubs, there are so many things you cannot miss out on if you make your way this jewel of an island.

Attend a Real Toga Party:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Located on the iconic Paradise Beach is a fun beach bar called Guapaloca. Every so often, Guapaloca will host themed parties and one of them is a toga party. Thankfully, during the few days we were in Mykonos, we were able to take part in this fun! (It’s not everyday you wake up feeling like a Greek goddess.)

A toga is definitely a process to put on. Luckily, there was a local woman helping everyone put their togas together so that they fit perfectly. In addition, Guapaloca offered refreshing tropical drinks, a Zumba instructor and a major dance party. After this toga party, I could definitely say I partied in Greece the right way.

Eat and Drink Your Way through Mykonos Town:

In the evening, there is nothing more magical than spending time in Alefkántra, also known as “Little Venice”. This quaint neighborhood features colorful balconies overlooking the Aegean Sea, marble streets that lead you to the most treasuring parts of the city along with the famous Grecian windmills. Even though there are so many wonderful restaurants in Mykonos Town, my personal favorite (with a view) is at D’Angelo. It was here where I indulged in one of my favorite Italian dishes in Greece, which was linguine with lobster meat!

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

As you start to wander through the adorable streets and alleyways of Mykonos Town, you will begin to see a lot of small bars and rather large nightclubs. I always recommend people to begin the night at a small bar or pub and then make your way to Skandinavian Bar, one of my favorite nightclubs in the world! The variety of craft cocktail options and amazing music by Greece’s famous DJs makes this place so lovable and easy to stay out until the sun rises.

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

In addition to visiting Mykonos Town in the evening, it is also a great place to visit during the day. I highly recommend going in the morning to take cute photos and to see all of the beautiful colors and flowers. It is also nice to stroll through these stone-paved streets and experience peace because that is really the only time this area is that quiet. Also, don’t forget to stop at a café and make friends with the locals. I enjoyed the below chicken souvlaki dish with someone from the area. We had a great conversation!

Go on a Booze Cruise:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

When you are traveling through the Greek Islands, it is only obligatory to do a booze cruise. Just like our boat cruise in Paros, we sailed over gorgeous crystal water and stopped in various locations where we could jump off the boat and swim.

The difference between my boat cruise in Mykonos compared to Paros is that in Mykonos we were less isolated and surrounded by more party boats and yachts. It was also cool because we got close to Paradise Beach where there were more day parties. It was a lot of fun in the sun!

Dance with the World’s Best DJs at Paradise Beach:

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

If you are looking for the ultimate dance parties in Greece, then Paradise Beach’s two clubs, Paradise Club and Cavo Paradiso, are the places to go at night! Both of these clubs attract the most popular DJs in the world and the parties do not stop until the sun is out and shining.

During my time in Mykonos, I had the opportunity to go to Paradise Club since it was closest in walking distance to my hotel. (Cavo Paradiso wasn’t far either, but it was too much for me to go to two clubs in one night.) Paradise Club is considered the biggest nightclub in Mykonos and is one of the most famous in the world. There are three stages; including an exclusive VIP section, swimming pool, palm trees and, of course, the beach!

How to Party Like a Greek in Mykonos

Even though my style of partying has changed since my college years, I still had an amazing time in Mykonos. No matter how old you are or what your life situation is, everyone could always use a fun night out dancing and having a good time with friends. That is why Mykonos is a great place to push all of your problems aside and just have fun!

I totally recommend you to stay with airbnb. Also don’t forget to visit paradise beach club and scorpios. Before going they get your travel design prepared by locals living in Mykonos. 🙂

Next time I go to Mykonos I either will stay in an Airbnb or hotel/resort. Staying on the premises of Paradise Beach Club was fun and convenient, but nowadays I enjoy peace and quiet haha.
