Autumn in Western Massachusetts

A woman checking into Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

The Berkshires of Western Massachusetts is a beautiful mountain region that is known for its charming villages, quaint restaurants, wineries, hiking trails and art scene. Overall, Massachusetts is the perfect state to visit in the fall due to its gorgeous foliage and the Berkshires needs to be on your bucket list if you’re looking for the perfect mountain getaway!

During October 2021, I did a New England fall foliage road trip to New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the charming villages of Vermont and the Berkshires of Massachusetts with Hannah of Hannah Liz Weaver. We spent two nights in the ski resort village of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire; one night in the ski resort town of Killington, Vermont, outside of the popular autumn village of Woodstock and two nights in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.

Our entire trip was perfect to see all the autumn foliage! We enjoyed a lot of great fall hiking, strolled through quaint villages that were decorated for Halloween, stayed at beautiful and cozy hotels and resorts and ate delicious seasonal food at the best restaurants.

If you’re looking to see the best of fall foliage in the Berkshires, it all depends on the year and when you’re planning to go. During most years, the best time to experience a Massachusetts autumn with its stunning fall colors is in mid-October. Click here for a Berkshires fall foliage tracker and map. (During fall 2021, foliage peaked a little later, so we did not get to experience the best colors in Western Massachusetts.)

Fall in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts

Traveling to the Berkshires in the Fall:

A fall hike in the Berkshires

When it comes to getting to Western Massachusetts to enjoy a Berkshires fall, you can either take a flight or drive. The closest international airport to the Berkshires is Albany International Airport. You can find affordable flights through Skyscanner.

Another way to experience the Berkshires’ fall is by driving! Since I traveled from Northern New Jersey to New England, I drove my own car. To summarize, Hannah and I started this trip in New Hampshire, so during the five hours north to Waterville Valley (where we stayed), I picked her up from Boston Logan Airport since she flew from Dallas.

After spending two nights in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, we drove a little less than two hours southwest to Woodstock. We then spent another night in Killington, Vermont before driving two and a half hours south to Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the Berkshires.

Whether you decide to take your own car or catch a flight to enjoy fall foliage and activities in the Berkshires, you will need a vehicle to get around. For those flying, I recommend renting a car from the airport.

Where to Stay in the Berkshires this Fall:

A woman enjoying a coffee on the porch at Red Lion Inn

During our fall trip in the Berkshires, Hannah and I spent our first night at Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge and our second night at Miraval Berkshires Hotel & Spa in Lenox. They are two of the best hotels in the Berkshires.

A woman enjoying a fall getaway at Red Lion Inn in the Berkshires

The Red Lion Inn is a historic hotel that was established in the 1700s. It burnt down in a fire during the 1800s and has been rebuilt and renovated a few times. I loved how staying at this charming inn brought us back in time and it was so cozy.

Red Lion Inn is situated on Stockbridge’s Main Street that features a lot of great restaurants and shops. Nearby are also great hiking trails! The inn also has a tavern to enjoy great food and drinks, a porch to sit on and read a book with a coffee in hand, a gift shop to buy souvenirs for loved ones and a heated outdoor pool to relax at and enjoy a nice swim all year long.

Staying at Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge:
The living room at Red Lion Inn

I loved how Red Lion Inn features timeless décor and warm touches. From the moment we checked in, Hannah and I felt welcomed. Our room had its own distinctive style and character and there were lovely views of Stockbridge’s Main Street. We were even greeted with Red Lion Inn’s bottle of house red wine and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. (Both were amazing!)

During a stay at Red Lion Inn in the Berkshires, you can choose a room in the main inn, their village houses, the Maple Glen house, the old Firehouse and at the sister property – The Briarcliff Motel.

A room at Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Our room was one of the 82 rooms located in the main inn. It blended luxury with comfort and I had a great night’s rest. Hannah and I stayed in the Two Queen Room that had two queen-sized beds, an en-suite bathroom, lounge chairs, a television, desk and more.

The other rooms located at Red Lion Inn’s main inn are the King Room, Queen Room, Two Double Room and Two Twin Room. In addition, there are also suites you can stay in at Red Lion Inn. You can choose between a King Suite, Queen Suite and Two Queen Suite.

Dining at Red Lion Inn:

There are four spots to enjoy a delicious meal at Red Lion Inn during fall in the Berkshires. The Main Dining Room at the inn is an elegant space where classic New England dishes are served for lunch and dinner. Hannah and I enjoyed a lovely breakfast at this spot! The chocolate chip pancakes with their mimosas were amazing!

In addition to the Main Dining Room at Red Lion Inn, there is also Widow Bingham’s Tavern, which is a rustic tavern where you can enjoy savory sandwiches, fresh salads and hearty soups; The Courtyard, which is an outdoor dining area in a garden that features seasonal specialties and The Lion’s Den, which is a cozy lounge area.

Red Lion Inn also has great packages and it is the perfect spot to celebrate a Berkshires wedding, holiday party, corporate event, family reunion and more.

Amenities at Red Lion Inn:

In addition to the amazing rooms and dining at Red Lion Inn, there is also a heated outdoor pool to enjoy. It is situated around a beautiful farmhouse and includes a hot tub, lounge chairs and snack bar area to enjoy in the warmer months.

Enjoying a Wellness Retreat at Miraval Berkshires:

During our second day on our fall road trip in the Berkshires, Hannah and I enjoyed the best wellness experience at Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa.

Fall colors in the Berkshires

Surrounded by the rolling, colorful hills of the Berkshires, Miraval is a resort that features a variety of elevated wellness programs led by a cohesive team of in-house professionals. Miraval is an ideal year-round destination for an all-encompassing wellness getaway.

Our time at Miraval had Hannah and I participating in fun fitness and wellness classes from power cycle to Vinyasa yoga. The two of us also did a great cooking class where a professional chef put together a delicious and healthy 4-course meal for us and we both also got a well-needed facial at the resort’s spa!

Miraval Berkshires Resort and Spa

Overall, Miraval is a luxury, 5-star, all-inclusive resort (minus the alcohol because it’s a wellness resort along with some specialty classes, spa treatments, etc.). The food at Miraval is delicious along with its fresh juices and smoothies.

The property at Miraval is beautiful too! There are so many spots to unwind, relax and rejuvenate at Miraval Berkshires! (There is also an outdoor heated pool along with fire pits.)

A woman enjoying Miraval Resort during fall in the Berkshires

Another awesome aspect to Miraval is that they encourage you to disconnect and not use your cellphone or other digital devices during your stay so that you can fully be present and enjoy everything the resort has to offer from fitness classes to archery and hiking to equestrian riding!

What is awesome about when you check into Miraval is that you will be given a wellness tote bag that you can use to carry your belongings in during your stay. It comes with a water bottle (there are water stations all over to fill up), a journal, mala beads, pens, a coupon for the gift shop and more.

The gift shop is a great spot to shop for yourself or a loved one. They sell athletic wear, jewelry, crystals, books and Miraval bath, bed and spa products.

Staying at Miraval Resort:
A woman enjoying a wellness retreat at Miraval during fall in the Berkshires

I loved staying at Miraval during fall in the Berkshires. It combined luxury with comfort and wellness with culinary.

Hannah and I stayed in the 2 Queen Beds with Balcony room that included two comfortable queen beds, a large en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, private balcony that overlooked the Berkshire’s fall foliage and a nook that was perfect for reading and meditating. (The nook area also came with a Tibetan singing bowl, stacking stones and a meditation cushion.)

The beds at Miraval Resort are AMAZING! Between the mattress, pillows and comforter, you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud!

A cozy room at Miraval Resort Berkshires

A stay at Miraval Berkshires also includes 1 King Bed with Balcony room; 2 Queen Beds Deluxe room; 1 King Bed Deluxe room; 2 Queen Beds room; 1 King Bed room; 2 Queen ADA Tub room and 1 King ADA Shower room to choose from.

Miraval also has suites to stay in such as the Miraval Balcony Suite with 1 King Bed; Miraval Suite King; Junior Suite Queen; Miraval Suite Queen and ADA Miraval Suite King Shower. You can also stay in either a historic or modern cottage.

Culinary at Miraval Berkshires:
Taking a cooking class at Miraval Berkshires

Since our stay at Miraval Berkshires was all-inclusive, we were able to enjoy seasonal dishes that are pleasing to the palette and balancing to the body. It is the perfect place to savor a delicious meal during fall in the Berkshires.

Everyday, Miraval hosts a lovely buffet and a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner at their Harvest Moon. I enjoyed their Florentine frittata for breakfast and the vermicelli in a peanut sauce with free range chicken for dinner. Even though alcohol isn’t included in your stay with Miraval Resorts, you can still get it at an additional cost.

A Vietnamese dinner at Miraval Berkshires in the fall

There are also culinary activities that you can enjoy at an additional fee. Hannah and I participated in the ‘Just Cook for Me Chef’. It wasn’t a cooking class where we made our own meals, but rather the chef put together a nice 4-course presentation that consisted of a salad, appetizer, main dish and dessert.

The salad was a kale apple Cesar salad; the appetizer were butternut squash fritters; the main course was barley and kimchi faro with shitake mushrooms and it was topped with a jalapeño-glazed trout with green beans that were sautéed with white wine and tomatoes; lastly, the dessert were blondies with Greek yogurt mixed with maple syrup and fresh strawberries. I will admit that I don’t eat Cesar salad, but everything else was phenomenal.

The spa at Miraval Berkshires is the perfect pace to relax, rejuvenate and unwind during a fall trip in Western Massachusetts. There is a service for everyone whether that be a massage, facial, hair or nail appointment. (They also offer great services for mother’s-to-be.) Click here to learn about all of the spa services Miraval Resort offers.

During our time at the spa, both Hannah and I enjoyed a Spiritual Warrior Facial that was both relaxing and the perfect therapy for my skin. This facial is an oil blend that takes fragrance to an ethereal level by combining plant and gemstone essences. It incorporates elegant herb and flower-based skincare products specifically customized for your skin. There is also a gentle gua-sha tool that is used in this facial that helps reduce puffiness and stimulates circulation.

Miraval has a plethora of spa packages for you to choose from. There are also amazing areas to lounge at, enjoy tea by a fire pit and warm up in one of the hot tubs.

New England Fall Activities at Miraval Berkshires:
A woman doing vinyasa yoga at Miraval Berkshires

There are so many relaxing and fun wellness activities you can do during a trip to Miraval Berkshires in the fall. There is a heated indoor and outdoor pool, various fitness classes with personal trainers and nutritionists, yoga/meditation/wellness classes, equestrian riding, guided hiking and biking, archery and hatchet throwing, golf, kayaking, winter adventures (skiing, snowboarding, etc.) and more.

The activities that we did during our stay at Miraval was Vinyasa Yoga and Power Cycle. Both of these workouts were everything I needed and I loved how there were beautiful views of the fall foliage and Berkshires’ mountains in each class.

Vinyasa Yoga at Miraval consisted of a dynamic sequence of poses that involved synchronizing breath with a flow of postures.

Power Cycle at Miraval was a fun cardio class that included upbeat music and had us cycling through intense intervals.

Miraval Resorts have two other locations in the United States – Austin and Tuscon.

Things to do in the Berkshires in the Fall:

A woman on a hike during fall in the Berkshires

Enjoy One of the Best Fall Hikes in the Berkshires:

One of the best fall hikes Hannah and I did in the Berkshires was the Hickey and Peeskawso Peak Loop trail. This hike is located on the Berkshires’ Monument Mountain and the trailhead is located around a 5-minute drive from the Red Lion Inn.

No matter what hikes you choose to do in the Berkshires, I recommend that you download the AllTrails app when you have cell phone reception so that you can find the best trail and use it as a navigation.

Hickey and Peeskawso Peak Loop trail in the Berkshires

The Hickey and Peeskawso Peak Loop trail is the perfect spot to enjoy fall foliage in the Berkshires. It is a 2.4-mile, moderate and heavily trafficked loop trail that features mini waterfalls, streams, rocky hills and overlooks of the colorful hills of Western Massachusetts.

Fall hikes in the Berkshires

Other great hikes in the Berkshires are at Mount Greylock, which is the highest point in Massachusetts at 3,489 feet above sea level.

Visit a Berkshires Winery:

Balderdash Winery during Berkshires in the fall

Another reason why visiting the Berkshires in the fall makes for a great trip during autumn in Massachusetts is because of its plethora of wineries and breweries.

Anytime I have an opportunity to visit a winery during my travels, I always take up the offer. Balderdash Cellars in Pittsfield, Massachusetts is located 20 minutes from Red Lion Inn and it is a great place to do a wine production tour, taste from different bottles, listen to live music, admire beautiful views, play yard games and socialize with friends.

During our fall road trip in the Berkshires, Hannah and I visited Balderdash Cellars one afternoon and loved tasting their red, white and rosé wines while listening to a live country band.

Explore the Culinary Scene in Western Massachusetts:

In addition to wineries, the Berkshires of Massachusetts is also known for its culinary scene. There are a lot great restaurants and cafés to visit during a fall trip to the Berkshires.

The downtown area of Great Barrington, MA

Three charming towns in the Berkshires that feature a lot of great restaurants are Stockbridge, Great Barrington, Lee and Lenox. During our time in the Berkshires, Hannah and I enjoyed lunch at MoonCloud Lounge in Great Barrington.

MoonCloud Lounge is a wonderful spot to enjoy crafted cocktails and small plates during fall in the Berkshires. This thriving lounge is where passionate bartenders, artists and designers come together to create a great space for all to enjoy. I loved the ambiance!

A charcuterie board from Mooncloud in the Berkshires

During our time at MoonCloud, I enjoyed the rosé sangria with a charcuterie board and everything was amazing!

For dinner, we ate at Morgan House Inn in Lee. This 1800’s tavern features great American cuisine, so I got the roasted duck with mashed potatoes and veggies and it was delicious. I savored my meal with a local craft beer and it hit the spot!

A duck dinner from Morgan House Inn in the Berkshires

Other great places to eat in the Berkshires are listed below:

Tour the Edith Wharton House:

Fall foliage in the Berkshires

Edith Wharton was an American novelist, writer and designer. She grew up in upper class New York, but designed her own country home in the town of Lenox in the Berkshires.

The Mount, which is known as the Edith Wharton House is a National Historic Landmark that features Colonial Revival architecture. During a fall getaway to the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, I suggest taking a tour of the Edith Wharton House as it includes beautiful gardens and special exhibitions, including an outdoor sculpture show.

Located at The Mount are 50 acres of preserved woodlands and there is also a gift shop and restaurant. There is a lot of history at the Edith Wharton House and during a fall trip, I recommend taking one of their ghost tours!

Other great spots to check out in the Berkshires are below:

  • Norman Rockwell Museum: An art museum in Stockbridge that is dedicated to Norman Rockwell, who was one of the best American illustrators.
  • Berkshire Botanical Garden: A 15-acre botanical garden that is situated in Stockbridge. It features a collection of over 3,000 local plant varieties.

Check out Ice Glen in Stockbridge:

Ice Glen in the Berkshires

Lastly, the Ice Glen in Stockbridge is another must-see during a fall trip to the Berkshires. To get to the Ice Glen, you will need to do a short, moderate hike. It is 1.4 miles out and back and it features a river along the trail and remarkable nature.

The Ice Glen itself consists of piled rocks that are thickened with mosses. The name of this trail derives from the ice that persist at the bottom of deep rock crevices. There isn’t much sunlight at Ice Glen, so the ice remains there through the summer.

What is great about Ice Glen’s location is that it is only a short, three-minute drive from Red Lion Inn. It is a great place for leaf peeping in Western Massachusetts.

Other great places to eat in the Berkshires are listed below:

Tour the Edith Wharton House:
