A Day with Sumoii in Newport

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island is the perfect day trip from the New York City area during autumn. With only a 3-hour drive, Newport is worth a visit to see the lavish Gilded Age mansions, the renowned yacht-filled harbor and stunning fall foliage.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

During my day trip to Newport, I was able to enjoy a beautiful time relaxing in front of the Vanderbilt mansions and on the stunning cliffside beaches with my new Sumoii sandless beach towels that I was easily able to pack in my travel tote bag. In addition, I was able to keep warm as I strolled around the iconic Cliff Walk and through the stunning city.

My New Beach Accessory: Sumoii Beach Towels

I think my life just got ten times easier because the concept of sandless beach towels were recently introduced to me! As someone who spends a decent amount of time at the beach during the summer, using a sandless beach towel will definitely help me save a lot of time and energy cleaning to get all the sand grains out. Also, who enjoys taking a nap on the beach while getting sand in your hair, eyes, mouth, etc.? I know I sure don’t!

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Sumoii believes that nothing should stop you from enjoying the beach life. Also, being a company located on the Gold Coast of Australia, these great towels combine both functionality and style so that everyone can say, “beach please”. The best part about it is that Sumoii towels don’t always need to be for the beach, they could be used for a picnic at the park, a lawn concert or ballgame and so much more! They are super soft, comfortable
and large enough to rest on. Sumoii beach towels are compact, making it conveniently easy to carry with you anywhere and everywhere! The size of the towel comes in 75” x 35” (or 190cm x 90cm) and you could fold it up and fit it into a travel pouch that comes with the towel. Now, going to the beach, pool or the park will be so much more convenient because I will no longer have stress over carrying a large and hefty towel that barely fits in my bag; I don’t have to risk bringing sand and dirt back to my house; I won’t have to worry about thoroughly shaking out my towel and accidentally getting sand on someone near me; I don’t have to wait until my towel dries (since they dry so quickly) and the best of all is that cleaning these towels are a breeze!

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Sustainability is huge when it comes to Sumoii. All towels are designed to be stylish, multifunctional and durable. In addition, Sumoii is 100 percent Australian-owned and they have chosen to make their towels with zero plastic, from product to packaging. By using sustainable materials and minimizing waste, Sumoii is participating in conservation, so that future generations can continue to enjoy our world’s breathtaking beaches and oceans for many years to come. As someone who has been going to the beach every summer since I was born, this matter is so important to me. I dream of living in a world where I no longer see garbage on the beach or get annoyed when a plastic bag touches my body in the ocean. I care about our ocean life and after spending a decent amount of time discovering our underwater world this past summer in Belize, I want to preserve it and help keep all living creatures alive and healthy.

Things to do in Newport:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Stroll the Cliff Walk:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

One of the most popular attractions in Newport, Rhode Island is the Cliff Walk. It is here where you could sit on the beach, go fishing, surfing or admire the stunning mansions. It is definitely something you cannot miss when you travel to Newport.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

The Newport Cliff Walk is a National Recreation Trail that runs for 3.5 miles along one of the most stunning coastlines of New England. An important thing to note about the Cliff Walk is that there are easily paved walking paths as well as unpaved, rocky areas, which could be hard to walk on for some travelers. It’s always important to stay cautious when you’re walking (or even running) on the Cliff Walk and wear comfortable shoes.

Tour the Mansions:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

While you are walking the Cliff Walk, I recommend making your way to Bellevue Avenue where you could visit the “cottages” of Newport’s elites during the Gilded Age of America. Below is a list of the Mansions:

Prior to visiting the mansions, you will need to purchase tickets to see them. You could purchase a ticket to see up to five mansions, two mansions or just one of them. Since I visited Newport with my mom, we decided to see two mansions along Bellevue Avenue – The Breakers and Marble House. (We purchased our tickets outside of The Breakers, but you could also get them online ahead of time.)

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

The Breakers: Out of all of Newport’s mansions, The Breakers is the grandest of them all! If you are planning to see at least one mansion, I definitely recommend The Breakers. The summer cottage of the infamous Vanderbilt’s features the family’s social and financial preeminence in the Guided Age.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

The Vanderbilt family (originally from the Netherlands) gained recognition and a fortune after Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt established steamships and the New York Central Railroad in New York City during the 1800s. The Commodore’s grandson, Cornelius Vanderbilt II later became Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad and then purchased a wooden house called The Breakers in Newport. The wooden house was destroyed by a fire and Vanderbilt commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to create a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo, which was inspired by 16th Century palaces of Genoa and Torino.

With seven children, the Vanderbilts’ youngest daughter Gladys, who married Count Laszlo Szechenyi of Hungary, inherited the house on her mother’s death in the 1930s. As a supporter of The Preservation Society of Newport County, she opened The Breakers in 1948 to raise funds for the organization. In the early 1970s, the Preservation Society purchased the house from her.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Marble House: Another must-see in Newport is Marble House, which is the summer home of William K. Vanderbilt. Between The Breakers and The Elms, Marble House is one of the top three Newport mansions.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Also designed by William Morris Hunt, Marble House features a foyer that is completely covered in marble. It is said that the marble alone in the house cost $7 million USD. William Vanderbilt gave the palace to his wife, Alva, as a 39th birthday gift. They divorced a few years later. Alva, along with Caroline Astor, were two preeminent hostesses during that time period and because she divorced her husband, she wasn’t allowed to throw any more parties at the mansion until after William’s death in 1920. The Chinese Tea House was installed on the back lawn, where Alva hosted parties and had rallies for women’s suffrage. There are still parties held here to this day!

The Chinese Tea House is definitely a place you cannot miss out on when you visit Marble House. It was modeled after the 12th Century Song Dynasty temples.

The mansions offer a beautiful lawn overlooking the ocean. You could spend as much time as you want there and using a Sumoii towel is absolutely perfect for this! What I love most about these towels are that they come in a range of different colors and designs, have corner sand pockets and water resistant zip compartments for valuables and they also feature lightweight absorbent material.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

(Side note: I am so excited to bring these wonderful towels with me down the shore in the summer! I could keep my phone safe along with my valuables and when I go in the ocean, I don’t ever have to worry about someone going through my bag. No one would ever know that my precious valuables are hidden in my beach towel!)

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Head to the Beach:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Located at the beginning of the Newport Cliff Walk is 1st Beach and Memorial Boulevard. This is where you could sit on the beach and go swimming during the summer months.

At the end of the Cliff Walk is Reject’s Beach and Bellevue Avenue. This beach is more of a black sand beach and the water isn’t the best to swim in because there are a ton of rocks and cliffs.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

During my day trip to Newport, my mom and I relaxed at Reject’s Beach where we laid down the yellow striped Sumoii towel that contrasted very well with the dark sand. Black sand beaches are not the most ideal if you aren’t looking to get your stuff dirty. After traveling to the famous black sand beach in Iceland, my white snow boots are now grey and enjoying a fun beach day at Perivolos Beach in Santorini, Greece left an older
beach towel destroyed. What is great about Samoii towels are that the sand comes off with just one swipe. Nothing sticks on the towel. It is incredible!!! Plus the towel is still soft and comfortable! I also enjoyed not having to bring the black sand beach back to my car or house! In addition, Sumoii towels are super absorbent and dry quickly in case the tide comes in and the ocean catches up to you! Ps. You don’t have to worry about carrying odors with you either if your towel gets wet because of how quickly it dries.

Stroll Around the City of Newport:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

The actual city of Newport is absolutely gorgeous and features all of the beauty a New England town is known for. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Portland, Maine with all of the beautiful Colonial houses, stunning harbor and fishermen’s wharf as well as lovely shops, restaurants and bars!

During our time in Newport, we took a stroll through the city where we got to admire the fall foliage (the foliage in Newport definitely out beats what we have here in New Jersey). Our day in Newport was chilly (in the high 50s Fahrenheit), so snuggling up with my Sumoii towel was absolutely perfect! Even though the towel isn’t terrycloth or velour, it is still so warm!

Savor a Delicious Seafood Lunch or Dinner:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

You cannot come to Newport and not indulge in a delicious seafood dinner! After a long day of exploring, my mom and I went to The Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar where we savored a delicious meal right on the harbor. Once again, the weather was a little chilly, so my Sumoii towel kept me warm!

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

For dinner, I enjoyed lobster ravioli with scallops, shrimp, cherry tomatoes and spinach in a lobster sherry sauce. It was absolutely amazing! My mom had an autumn-inspired scallop dish that included sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce. We were content for sure! Our dessert was a delicious crème brûlée with a cappuccino. It was the best way to end our day in Newport.

If You Have More Time, Go to a Winery:

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

Even though it was really nice to be able to visit Newport, Rhode Island for the first time in a day trip, I wish I had more time to visit a winery, since the area is renowned for so many.

One of the most popular wineries the Newport area is known for is Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard, also known as the Alex and Ani winery! The reason why Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard is known as the Alex and Ani winery is because the owner of the jewelry company also owns the vineyard! It is absolutely beautiful and also a perfect place to bring your Sumoii towel to enjoy a picnic and savor delicious wines with a charcuterie
platter.

A Fall Day Trip to Newport, Rhode Island

I hope you all enjoyed reading about the top things to do in Newport, Rhode Island during a day trip in autumn and discovering the best sandless beach towel out there for all different types of outdoor activities and adventures! I loved exploring a brand new city and staying warm and comfortable with my new lightweight towels. (I love how convenient it is for a trip to the beach or park!)
