Woodstock to Stowe, VT

A woman at Middle Covered Bridge in Woodstock - one of the best fall places in Vermont

Vermont is one of the best states in New England to experience leaf peeping. From its charming villages to its beautiful Green Mountains, a trip to see the fall colors in Vermont is a must if you’re someone who loves the season as much as I do! Two of the best fall places in Vermont to see the foliage are Woodstock and Stowe.

During October 2021, I did a New England fall foliage road trip to New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the charming villages of Vermont and the Berkshires of Massachusetts with Hannah of Hannah Liz Weaver. We spent two nights in the ski resort village of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire; one night in the ski resort town of Killington, Vermont, outside of the popular autumn village of Woodstock and two nights in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.

A woman at Sleepy Hollow Farm in Woodstock, Vermont

Our entire trip was perfect to see all the autumn foliage! We enjoyed a lot of great fall hiking, strolled through quaint villages that were decorated for Halloween, stayed at beautiful and cozy hotels and resorts and ate delicious seasonal food at the best restaurants.

Regarding when is the best time to visit Vermont for fall colors, it all depends on the year and when you’re planning to go. During most years, the best time to see Vermont fall foliage is anytime between late September through late October.

A woman at Kent Pond in Killington, Vermont

Since Hannah and I visited Woodstock and Stowe in autumn 2021, we found that foliage was at its peak in Stowe and Killington. It had already past peak in Woodstock. As you plan your trip, I recommend following a Vermont fall foliage tracker and map.

In this travel guide, discover the top things to do in the best fall places in Vermont, which are Woodstock and Stowe.

To summarize, Hannah and I started this trip in New Hampshire, so during the five hours north to Waterville Valley, I picked her up from Boston Logan Airport since she flew from Dallas. After spending two nights in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, we drove a little less than two hours southwest to Woodstock.

Best Place to Stay to See Fall Colors in Vermont:

A woman enjoying Killington - one of the best fall places in Vermont

Hannah and I only spent one night in Vermont at Mountain Meadows Lodge, which is in the popular ski town of Killington. A fun fact is that Killington Ski Resort is recognized as the number 1 ski resort along the East Coast. Prior to this autumn road trip, I used to only go to Vermont for ski trips at Mount Snow.

Mountain Meadows Lodge is a newly renovated boutique lodge that made us feel at home the moment we checked in. It is set in a 180-year-old historic cow barn and farmhouse and is situated on Kent Pond in Killington, which is another one of the best fall places in Vermont.

One of the best fall places in Vermont

Overall, I adored staying at Mountain Meadows Lodge. It was cozy and they offer everything in true Vermont style – a warm stone fireplace, comfortable leather couches, rustic décor, a full bar, game room, sauna and a room to store your ski/snowboard equipment.

Rooms at Mountain Meadows Lodge:
A room at Mountain Meadows Lodge in Killington, VT

Located on the property of Mountain Meadows Lodge is a barn house and a farmhouse that you can stay in. Hannah and I stayed in the barn house in a Lake View Room. It boasted a premium, luxury king bed, en-suite bathroom, Permium William Roam amenities, a flat screen smart television and a terrace overlooking Kent Pond with two Adirondack chairs and a table. It was comforting and beautiful! We were even gifted with fresh maple syrup to take home with us.

The other rooms at Mountain Meadows Lodge‘s barn house are the Mountain View King Room, Mountain View Suite, Barnhouse King Room, Barnhouse Twin Room, Star View Room and Kent Suite. There are also seven beautiful rooms in the farmhouse that feature en-suite bathrooms, comfortable king beds and one of them even has a fireplace.

Dining at Mountain Meadows Lodge:
Mountain Meadows Lodge in Killington, Vermont

Mountain Meadows Lodge also has a bistro and bar onsite that features country cuisine. Unfortunately, the restaurant wasn’t open for lunch and dinner during our stay, but we did get to enjoy the hotel’s country breakfast in the morning and it was delicious!

I loved everything that the country breakfast had to offer from the buttermilk pancakes with fresh, Vermont maple syrup to the eggs as well as the homemade maple granola to the coffee!

Friends enjoying fall drinks by the fire

The bar at Mountain Meadows Lodge is awesome! During our stay, they had a great fall drink menu and I got the “Never Angry Orchard”. It included fresh apple cider with Goslings dark rum. It was rimmed with maple syrup and candy and included an orange slice. It was perfect!

What is also awesome about staying at Mountain Meadows Lodge during a VT fall foliage trip is that they also have fire pits to enjoy at night with s’mores kits! The fire pits with s’mores were perfect and set the mood for the entire autumn getaway.

Amenities at Mountain Meadows Lodge:
A woman relaxing at one of the best fall places in Vermont - Mountain Meadows Lodge

What is awesome about Mountain Meadows Lodge is that it is located along the Appalachian Trail, so you can hike parts of it! The Appalachian Trail is a 2,200-mile trail (3,500 kilometers) on the East Coast of the United States and it starts in Maine and goes to Georgia. It also runs through parts of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

(I hiked part of the Appalachian trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park during March 2021. It is a gorgeous trail!)

A woman and a dog in Vermont

From Mountain Meadows property, you can hike along the Thundering Brook Falls Trail. You will hike along a scenic trek that leads to a waterfall. What is awesome is that the lodge has a cute dog named Daisy that knows the trails well and will lead you on a memorable hike! Daisy will let you know if you’re going the wrong way and will always wait for you on the trail to make sure you don’t get lost.

Hiking in Killington is a great way to see some of the best fall foliage in Vermont. Killington has over 45 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. You can also enjoy an 18-hole golf course at Green Mountain National Golf Course and fun adventures at The Killington Adventure Centre where you can do epic activities like zip lining.

Fall foliage at Kent Pond at Mountain Meadows Lodge

In addition, Mountain Meadows Lodge also has fishing equipment as well canoes, kayaks and paddle boards to enjoy on Kent Pond. What I also loved about staying at this beautiful Vermont hotel, is that they have a dock on the pond with Adirondack chairs that you can enjoy. It is a peaceful spot to admire fall color in Vermont while reading a book with a coffee in hand.

Mountain Meadows Lodge also has great wedding packages!

Between Woodstock to Stowe, VT, there are a plethora of great fall activities to do between leaf peeping to local cider tasting!

Woodstock – Best Fall Places in Vermont:

Visit the Woodstock Inn:

A woman in front of Woodstock Inn & Resort - one of the best fall places in Vermont

Known as “Vermont’s Most Beautiful Address”, the Woodstock Inn is a charming hotel set in the heart of Woodstock.

As you stroll around the village of Woodstock, you must stop to see the Inn as it is surrounded by beautiful fall colors and there are even colorful chrysanthemums surrounding the property. It is one of the main reasons why Woodstock makes for the best fall places in Vermont!

During a visit to the Woodstock Inn, you must check out one of the four restaurants or even attend a wine or educational cooking class! I recommend enjoying a drink by one of their cozy fireplaces during a fall road trip through Vermont.

In addition, the Woodstock Inn & Resort has its own country club and runs fun activities around Vermont’s Green Mountains. You can even book a spa appointment there as well.

Stroll through Downtown Woodstock:

Downtown Woodstock, Vermont - one of the best fall places

One of the best places in Vermont to see fall foliage, admire Halloween decorations and visit quaint cafés and boutique shops is in the village of Woodstock.

The town of Woodstock, Vermont was established in 1761. It became a hub for entrepreneurs, artists, makers and tradespeople. There are plenty of tours you can take to experience Woodstock’s past, but you can even see a lot of history come to life as you stroll around this quaint village.

Historical Woodstock, Vermont

In addition to seeing the Woodstock Inn, I also recommend visiting Mon Vert Café for breakfast or lunch. It is a rustic and organic café that features local and seasonal country food, Vermont-brewed coffee and maple syrup, plus more! You can also enjoy craft beer, organic teas, local wine and ciders at this spot.

Some great shops to check out in Woodstock are Clover Gift Shop, The Vermont Flannel Co., Elevation Clothing, Collective – The Art of Craft Inc., The Yankee Bookshop, 37 Central Clothiers and Woodstock Farmers’ Market.

A woman enjoying one of the best fall places in Vermont - Woodstock

The homes, churches and bed and breakfasts are also something to admire as you stroll through Woodstock. One of my favorite spots was The Ardmore, which is a bed and breakfast in Woodstock. They had great Halloween decorations when I visited! It was so adorable.

If there was another New England village that Woodstock reminded me of, it was Salem, Massachusetts, which I visited in fall 2020 for Halloween.

Discover Vermont’s Covered Bridges:

Taftsville Covered Bridge in Woodstock, Vermont

Another reason why Woodstock is considered one of the best fall places in Vermont is because of its covered bridges.

Over a hundred years ago, there were around 600 different covered bridges in the state of Vermont. Nowadays, there are only a little over 100 left and you can see four of them in the Woodstock area during a foliage Vermont trip.

Most covered bridges feature idyllic wood that cover the bridge. Seeing these structures will bring you back in time and they are worth checking out.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see all four covered bridges in Woodstock, but the ones I did see were the Middle Covered Bridge, which is across the street from the Woodstock Inn, and the Taftsville Covered Bridge that is just off of Route 4, which is the road you take to get into the heart of town.

The other two covered bridges to discover in Woodstock, VT is the Lincoln Covered Bridge, which is also located on Route 4, and Quechee Covered Bridge that is just outside of the village in a town called Quechee.

Enjoy the Beauty at Sleepy Hollow Farm:

Sleepy Hollow Farm in Woodstock, Vermont

Woodstock boasts a lot of great farms where you can enjoy some leaf peeping in Vermont. A staple to Woodstock is Sleepy Hollow Farm.

Admittedly, over the past several years, Sleepy Hollow Farm has become a famous spot for people to visit, so be prepared for some crowds. One thing to note about Sleepy Hollow is that it isn’t a typical fall farm where you would go pumpkin picking and ride hayrides. It’s just a historical farm and popular photo spot.

One of the best fall places in Vermont - Sleepy Hollow Farm

Overall, Sleepy Hollow Farm is situated on beautiful rural land in Woodstock and it dates back to the 1780s when two young brothers from Connecticut left their family farm for a new life in Central Vermont. They weren’t pioneers but instead were known for their milking herd and chickens. They would deliver eggs to homes around Woodstock and the surrounding towns.

Other farms to check out in the Woodstock area are Billings Farm & Museum and Sugar Bush Farm.

Savor Dinner at 506 on the River Inn:

One of the best places to eat at during a fall trip to Vermont is 506 Bistro & Bar at 506 on the River Inn in Woodstock. It is the sister hotel to Mountain Meadows Lodge.

Spiked hot apple cider from Vermont

506 Bistro is a farm-to-table restaurant that features a delicious seasonal menu with crafted cocktails. Each dish is inspired by fresh, high quality ingredients from local Vermont farms.

I loved eating at 506 Bistro because it was warm and cozy. It was decorated beautifully for autumn and there were fireplaces and candles all around.

Crispy calamari from 506 on the River Inn
One of the best fall places in Vermont - salmon dinner at 506 on the River Inn
Pumkin Pie and Chocolate Lava Cake from 506 on the River Inn

For an appetizer, Hannah and I savored the crispy calamari with lemon siracha; for my main dish, I got the salmon with pumpkin crust, cranberry glaze and mashed potatoes and Hannah had the chef’s special panini, which was a Tuscan panini; for dessert, I enjoyed the pumpkin pie and Hannah savored the chocolate lava cake. Everything was delicious! For a drink, I warmed up to the spiked maple cider and Hannah had a glass of white wine.

Stowe – Best Fall Places in Vermont:

Cider Taste at Cold Hollow Cider Mill:

Apple cider donuts

Located a little outside of Stowe is Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center, VT. One of the main reasons why Stowe, VT is one of the best fall places in Vermont is because this awesome spot allows visitors to enjoy the best of autumn treats!

Cold Hollow Cider Mill is a charming spot in the Stowe area with a country store and market, bakery, restaurant and cidery. At the bakery and market, you can purchase homemade apple cider donuts, which are a staple baked good during fall in the Northeast. If you’ve never tried a cider donut before, it is simply a cake doughnut with cinnamon, nutmeg and apple cider used in the batter. It is usually covered in cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar or are plain. (The cider donuts sold at Cold Hollow Cider Mill are plain.)

At the market, you can also purchase fresh Vermont maple syrup; pumpkin, apple and maple butter; pancake mixes and other staples that are iconic to the Green Mountain State. You can also get souvenirs, apparel, home goods and more at Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

One of the best fall places in Vermont - Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Across from the market is Cold Hollow’s Luncheonette and the hard cider tasting room. Hannah and I didn’t eat at the restaurant because the wait was too long, but you can enjoy fresh salads, soups and paninis.

I loved cider tasting at Cold Hollow Cider Mill! The tasting room was nice and cozy and they offered great ciders to choose and taste ranging from sweet, fruity ciders to dry ciders along with seasonal ciders (which are my favorite).

Have a Sweet Treat at Ben & Jerry’s:

Also located in Waterbury, outside of Stowe, is the first Ben & Jerry’s factory! During a fall road trip to Stowe, it is a must to visit Ben & Jerry’s and do a factory tour while tasting some of their most renowned flavors!

Ben & Jerry's in Vermont

Even though I visited Ben & Jerry’s during October, I knew I had to enjoy some ice cream while I was there. Ben & Jerry’s is one of my favorite ice cream brands. They helped me get through finals week in college!

One of the main reasons why this spot is one of the best fall places in Vermont is because there is a lot of fall foliage around and the views are beautiful to admire while you enjoy your scoops of ice cream.

One of the best fall places in Vermont - Ben & Jerry's

During my time at Ben & Jerry’s I got the small cup, which is two scoops. One of my scoops was maple walnut and the other scoop was half baked, which is chocolate and vanilla ice cream mixed with pieces of cookie dough and brownie batter in it.

Go on a Brewery Tour:

Craft beer in Vermont

One of the best fall activities is to go on a brewery tour. I love visiting different breweries during the cooler months and another reason why Stowe makes for one of the best fall places in Vermont is because there is a plethora of different places to taste local, craft beer.

There are numerous beer tours you can take in Stowe, Vermont, but you can also visit the different breweries on your own too. Some of the best breweries in the Stowe area are von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall, The Alchemist Brewery and Idletyme Brewing Company. If you’re not the biggest beer lover, most of these breweries also have ciders and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy. You can also visit Stowe Cider as well during your time in this charming area.

Ride the Gondola Skyride at Stowe Mountain Resort:

Beautiful views of Stowe, Vermont

Another one of the best ski resorts in Vermont is Stowe and during autumn, they offer the Gondola Skyride to the summit of the mountain so that visitors can enjoy beautiful views and the best of Vermont fall colors.

Open year round, Stowe’s Gondola Skyride operates during the daytime and the prices for one adult and teenager ages 13 and older is $37 USD and the price for a child ages 5-12 is $26 USD. Young children under 5 years of age are free to ride the gondola with a parent or guardian.

On the way up to the top, you can experience Vermont’s fall foliage at its best. (It is great for those leaf peeping in Vermont.) The summit to this ride is at Mt. Mansfield, which is Vermont’s highest mountain. It is situated at 4,395 feet above sea level.

At the top of the mountain, you can enjoy 360-degree views, have a nice meal at the restaurant, shop for loved ones back home and savor a sweet treat at a waffle stand.

Hike in Smuggler’s Notch:

Fall foliage in Vermont

Located near Stowe is another great ski resort and year-round destination that is perfect for all. Smugglers’ Notch is another one of the best fall places to visit during a Vermont foliage trip.

During the fall season, I suggest taking part of one of the many hikes Smugglers’ has to offer. Some of the best hikes in Smugglers’ Notch are on Mt. Mansfield. There are also great waterfall hikes such as Bingham Falls and Moss Glen Falls. Smugglers’ also has a lot of great guided tours such as a maple walk!

No matter what hikes you choose to do in Vermont, I recommend that you download the AllTrails app when you have cell phone reception so that you can find the best trail and use it as a navigation.

Another great way to enjoy autumn colors in Vermont is by taking the fall foliage boat tour that runs every day from 11am to 12pm during the season.
