Top 5 Benefits and Advantages of Small Group Travel:

Your next adventure is waiting. Whether scratching off your 10th, 30th, 60th, or 100th country, or if it’s your first trip abroad, small group travel offers benefits that will help you enjoy the best life-changing experience.
No matter if you’re a solo traveler wanting to join a group of people or you and your friends and/or family members are looking to follow a set itinerary with fun group activities and a tour guide, this article dives into the top 5 benefits and advantages of small group travel.
Safety when Traveling with a Group:

One of the benefits of being part of tour groups is safety. Criminals are less likely to target larger groups than solo travelers.
Whether sightseeing in Paris, France, or meandering through the souks of Marrakech, Morocco, being a member of the group trip offers shared awareness. You and your travel companions can spot pickpockets, pick up on suspicious behavior, and ultimately have each other’s backs.
Additionally, specific destinations like Venice, Italy, can become quite confusing to navigate, especially with its narrow alleyways and canals. Having travel buddies helps navigate unfamiliar destinations and confirm directions from different sources. Venturing around with a group also helps with emotional support and with making confident decisions.
Making Friends through Organized Group Travel:

Another one of the top benefits of small group trips is the opportunity to make new travel buddies, especially for solo travelers. As a regular solo female traveler, I sometimes feel like I’ve missed out on fun opportunities because I didn’t feel comfortable enjoying them alone.
From sailing around the Balkans to experiencing Japan’s culinary scene and adventuring around the USA National Parks, there is nothing like creating shared memories. The best part about being a member of a small group tour is that there is no need to break the ice during these fun experiences.
Since you already have built-in team members, aka, “your fellow travel companions,” there are no awkward moments or small talk, just laughter, natural interactions, and incredible memories. This makes it perfect for introverts like me!
Additionally, this fantastic form of travel brings together a diverse range of people. Those whom you would never meet by only sticking around your hometown.
The Group Travel Benefit of Planned Logistics:

One of the significant travel benefits of group trips is having planned logistics in place. This means less stress and more enjoyment on your vacation.
When comparing group tours with solo adventures, one of my favorite aspects is the peace of mind that comes with planning a journey to a destination I’m unfamiliar with, or a place that is off the beaten path. In fact, small group tours are among the best ways for seniors to travel the world!
The benefits of small group tours include airport navigation, pick-ups and drop-offs, as well as avoiding last-minute planning chaos, such as when a flight gets canceled. Additionally, they include organized accommodations and tours, along with group rates and travel deals.
Other benefits of small group trips include having a dedicated group leader and gaining access to hidden gems, as well as busy museums and landmarks. A trip leader will also ensure you and your group members experience the local culture from a non-tourist perspective. Additionally, having a local guide makes it easier for you and your fellow travelers to navigate language barriers.
The leading two trips, where my logistics were already planned for me, were Peru and Tanzania. The thought of organizing transportation to safari lodges or hiking trails overwhelmed me, so it was reassuring to have everything planned well in advance.
Support when Traveling as a Group:

Whether it’s your first time traveling or you’re simply looking to enjoy a family reunion, there is nothing better than the support that comes with small group tours!
The benefits of small group travel include having 24/7 emergency support, whether it is medical, dietary, accessibility-related, or other needs. When you book a group trip, the company you go through will ensure you have travel insurance in the event of an unforeseen circumstance.
The other type of support you can experience through small group tours is organized accommodation, transportation, and activities. Additionally, most organizations provide visa assistance, pre-departure briefings on what to pack, cultural norms, safety tips, and general expectations.
Almost every group trip I’ve been on has had a dedicated WhatsApp chat or Facebook group, along with coordinated meeting points and support for both youth and elderly travelers.
Why Small Group Travel? Endless Memories Made!

Of course, the top benefit of small group travel is the endless memories (and a few inside jokes) made through the new experiences enjoyed with strangers who became like family.
Unlike solo travel, where capturing memories can be challenging, group trips make it easy to take photographs and document special moments. Plus, at the end of your journey, there is nothing like setting up a shared photo album and keeping in touch with everyone on social media!
5 Best Destinations for Small Group Tours:

As someone who has visited over 60 countries across six continents, I have found that group travel offers numerous benefits. The following countries are my personal favorites for small group trips:
New Zealand:

A destination I traveled to solo, which I wish I had visited as part of a small group tour, is New Zealand. This fascinating country features diverse landscapes and memorable adventures.
One of the top benefits of small group travel in New Zealand is the transportation that is organized for you. Kiwis travel on the left-hand side of the road. Because of that, I did not feel comfortable renting a car on my own since I usually drive on the right-hand side.
Relying on public transportation in New Zealand wasn’t ideal due to time constraints. If I had gone to this breathtaking country on a group trip, I wouldn’t have had to worry about getting around New Zealand on my own, and I likely would have been able to see more fascinating spots that are off the grid.
Another significant reason why small group travel to New Zealand is perfect is that it offers numerous adventures to enjoy with like-minded travelers. Whether it’s bungee jumping, skiing, or snowboarding in the winter months, hiking, white-water rafting, or wine tasting, it’s always more fun and safer to enjoy these thrilling activities with others.
Japan:

My favorite destination that I traveled to on a group trip is Japan. Overall, this phenomenal country is perfect for all to enjoy, from its rich culture and fascinating history to its futuristic restaurants and fun entertainment.
Although Japan’s public transportation is efficient, it can be overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. Local group leaders can help with navigating trains, such as the high-speed Shinkansen, busy streets like Tokyo’s Shibuya Crossing, and language barriers in smaller villages.
Additionally, joining small group tours and having an experienced guide often helps explain local customs, etiquette, how to navigate certain cities and small towns, and the country’s history. They also do a better job of explaining cultural sites and offer leading recommendations for the best food.
Another reason why I thoroughly enjoyed my group trip to Japan was that I made endless memories with fellow travelers while jamming out at karaoke bars in Kyoto, conquering the crowds in Tokyo’s Harajuku area, capturing moments at themed cafés in Osaka, feeding the adorable deer in Nara, and enjoying the natural beauty of Hakone.
Italy:

A country I keep returning to is Italy. Even though the land of delicious food and great wine, incredible history, and stunning coastal towns feels like home to me, I highly recommend small group travel around Italy, especially for older globetrotters.
As much as I love traveling, it can be exhausting, especially when it comes to following a schedule, taking public transportation, and navigating new places. When it comes to group trips to Italy, there is no need to worry about complex logistics, as everything is professionally planned and organized for you.
Whether you’re spending two days in Milan or enjoying a relaxing beach vacation on the Amalfi Coast, Italy is a country where pickpocket situations often occur. Unfortunately, older travelers are more susceptible to being robbed abroad, so traveling in a small group can help prevent unwanted situations, such as pickpocketing, from occurring.
Also, traveling with a group of people allows for support with anyone who experiences mobility issues or has an unexpected health concern. Being on a small group tour allows for leisurely walking and more stops for rest, eating, and shopping. Additionally, most accommodations are in central locations on senior trips for added convenience.
Overall, senior group travel to Italy is more about enjoyment than exhaustion. It also allows travelers of a similar age group to appreciate elevated food and wine experiences, skip-the-line historical and religious tours, artisan demonstrations, and much more.
Morocco:

After Japan, the next best place that I’ve traveled to with a group was Morocco. From exploring Marrakech to glamping in the Sahara, being part of a small group tour always allows me to save money, stay safe, and create shared experiences with other women around my age.
As I mentioned earlier, one of the top benefits of small group travel in Morocco is safety. I worried less when journeying through busy medinas or visiting more secluded places.
The best part about being a member of a group trip in Morocco was experiencing exclusive opportunities that I wouldn’t have had on a solo adventure. These experiences included glamping in the desert, taking a camel ride, visiting Aït Benhaddou, located just south of the High Atlas Mountains, and participating in a group cooking class in the city.
Just as in New Zealand, having my transportation taken care of also made my experience in Morocco a positive one.
Peru:

In conclusion, Peru was the final travel destination where small group tours offered numerous benefits. This astonishing South American country has some of the most unforgettable experiences, including hiking to Machu Picchu, savoring the finest cuisine in Lima, and camping in the Amazon.
As I mentioned above, traveling with a group in Peru provided built-in safety and security, especially in specific areas of the cities and remote villages, with organized transportation and local guides who helped us navigate challenging terrain, both on mountain trails as well as on the streets.
One of the main advantages of group travel in Peru is that it offers easy access to Machu Picchu permits, allows you to visit traditional villages, and provides companionship (with even more memories) while hiking in the Andes to zip-lining in the rainforest.
Tour operators on a group trip in Peru will make sure you stay safe and healthy. They will also lead you through ethical activities, support you in learning the local language, and help you enjoy adventurous experiences.
Additionally, small group tours in Peru allow you to capture the best photos, from the summit of Machu Picchu to Rainbow Mountain. After all, Peru is one of the most picturesque countries in the world!
