One of the leading girls’ summer getaways from New York City is to the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. The glacially formed Finger Lakes are a group of 11 long, narrow lakes shaped like fingers. What makes this area of Central New York the perfect escape is that it’s filled with scenic lakes, a leading culinary scene, and award-winning wineries and vineyards. For those who love tasting exceptional wines, savoring delicious food, and enjoying breathtaking nature, I recommend following the Seneca Lake Wine Trail!

Overall, Seneca is the largest and deepest lake of the Finger Lakes and is surrounded by over 3,700 acres of vineyards. What makes this region perfect for grape growing is its microclimate, which is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Seneca Lake is a four- to five-hour drive north of New York City, making it the best getaway from the concrete jungle.

I enjoyed the Seneca Lake Wine Trail with my mom in July 2026. We had a memorable time sampling incredible wines, including Seneca Lake’s famed Rieslings and Cabernet Francs. We also indulged in great dining, enjoyed a lovely boat tour on the lake, and took in the incredible nature in Watkins Glen State Park.

In this article, discover the best 4-day Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary for a summer trip. It’s perfect for bachelorette/bachelor trips, birthday celebrations, girls’/guys’ getaways, couples’ escapes, and, most importantly, it is the leading trip for every wine lover.

Perfect 4-Day Seneca Lake Wine Trail Itinerary

Traveling to Seneca Lake in New York:

A woman enjoying a summer trip along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

The best way to visit the Seneca Lake Wine region, especially from New York City, and the surrounding Northeast, is to drive. If you don’t have your own vehicle, I suggest renting one!

If you don’t drive, I recommend taking the Greyhound/Trailways bus to Geneva, a charming city nestled along Seneca Lake. From there, you can take a rideshare around the different wineries, vineyards, and small towns along the lake.

Another public transit option is taking Amtrak from Penn Station in New York City to Syracuse or Rochester. You’ll need to rent a car from there to get to Seneca Lake.

For those traveling from farther away, you can fly into Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, which is the closest airport to Watkins Glen and is around 25 to 30 minutes away. Watkins Glen is located at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. The bigger international airports you can fly into are Rochester International Airport, which is around 45 minutes to one hour from Geneva, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport, which is around 45 minutes from the lake’s most northern city. You can find affordable flights through Skyscanner.

Top Seneca Lake Wine Trail Lodging:

A woman enjoying a morning coffee outside her patio at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars.

The best place to stay along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, near many member wineries, is the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars. Located in Dundee, the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars is a boutique hotel with vineyard-side lodging overlooking the scenic Seneca Lake.

All the guestrooms feature great amenities like private patios or balconies, views of the vineyards and lake, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and cozy beds. My mom and I stayed in the Vinter’s Select Guestroom, which offers the option to adjoin rooms, making it perfect for families and friend groups.

The other rooms you can book at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars are the Vinter’s Deluxe Guestroom, Vinter’s Guestrooms, and the GSE Vineyard Cottage. The cottage is a separate house that offers two bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, sunroom, living room, and dining room. It can accommodate up to four to six guests.

During your stay at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars, you must enjoy a tasting experience. You and your friends can choose from the Classic Tasting, which includes five wines of your choice; the Specialty Tasting, where you can choose from a bubbles-and-cookie-bites tasting or a chocolate-and-wine pairing.

In addition to the wine cellars, Glenora also has on-site dining at Veraísons Restaurant. It features regional cuisine, using local ingredients. As a guest of the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars, you can also enjoy a Continental breakfast every morning with gorgeous lake views.

Glenora Wine Cellars is also a wonderful place to host an event, including a Finger Lakes wedding.

Weather in the Finger Lakes during Summer:

A woman enjoying wine along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail in the Finger Lakes.

What makes New York State one of the leading places to vacation in the summer is its gorgeous weather. From June through August, you can enjoy comfortable weather that is perfect for wine tasting and outdoor adventures. Please keep in mind, though, that occasional humidity and storms can occur during the summer months.

When packing for this 4-day Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary, I suggest packing sundresses, nice tops and shorts or skirts, light jackets, raincoats, athletic wear, swimsuits, and hiking shoes or sneakers.

Below are the average temperatures for the Finger Lakes region during the summer:

June: Average highs in the upper 70s°F and lows in the mid 50s°F, with around nine days of precipitation.

July: Average highs in the lower 80s°F and lows in the lower 60s°F, with around six days of precipitation.

August: Average highs in the lower 80s°F and lows in the upper 50s°F, with around eight days of precipitation.

4-Day Seneca Lake Wine Trail Itinerary:

A woman enjoying a wine tasting among the vineyards along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

The Seneca Lake AVA is one of two recognized appellations within New York’s Finger Lakes. The other Finger Lakes AVA (American Viticultural Area) is the Cayuga Lake AVA. In fact, I got to enjoy many of Cayuga’s wineries during my late fall Finger Lakes getaway in 2020.

Overall, 28 wineries and vineyards make up the Seneca Lake AVA, making it New York’s largest and most active wine trail. In this blog post, you’ll discover the best wineries to visit while following a 4-day Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary. What’s great about these wineries is that they are open year-round.

Day 1: Arrive in the Seneca Lake Wine Region

Lakewood Vineyards in the Finger Lakes wine region.

Wine Taste at Lakewood Vineyards:

A woman enjoying a wine tasting at Lakewood Vineyards in Watkins Glen, NY.

When you first arrive in the Finger Lakes, head to Lakewood Vineyards in Watkins Glen. This is where you’ll enjoy a lovely tour and tasting.

Lakewood Vineyards is family-owned and operated for three generations. It sits on 100 acres of land that was once a peach and apple orchard. Today, Lakewood Vineyards is known for its award-winning, estate-grown wines and some of the most beautiful views of Seneca Lake.

During my afternoon at Lakewood Vineyards, owners Liz and Chris gave my mom and I a tour of the property and production room. They feature 14 grape varieties, offering wine to suit all palates. Some of my favorite wines were the Cabernet Franc Dry Rosé, Dry Riesling, and Abby Rose, which is their best-selling sweet wine.

Since Lakewood Vineyards will be the first destination when you arrive in the Finger Lakes, I recommend enjoying a charcuterie board for lunch.

Check into the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars:

A woman enjoying a wine tasting at Glenora Wine Cellars in Dundee, NY.

After your wine tasting at Lakewood Vineyards, check into the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars. Relax for a bit, take a nap, (maybe) have a glass of wine, and freshen up before dinner in downtown Watkins Glen.

Enjoy Sunset and Dinner in Watkins Glen:

An intimate Seneca Lake Wine Trail dinner at GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar in Watkins Glen, NY.

Located at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, spending a lovely summer evening in downtown Watkins Glen is a must during a Finger Lakes weekend getaway.

Depending on what time you have dinner, catching a sunset along the lake is one of the best ways to conclude your first day. Seneca Harbor in Watkins Glen offers a dock overlooking the lake. This is where you can admire the warm shades of yellow, orange, pink, and purple reflected on the tranquil water.

Then, enjoy dinner and drinks at GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar in downtown Watkins Glen. This New American restaurant specializes in New York wine and cider and offers delicious fare. It’s a cozy and intimate bar and restaurant that won’t leave you disappointed!

During our evening at GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar, I enjoyed a cider, while my mom got a wine. Everyone we met raved about the mussels, so we obviously had to order them as an appetizer and were not disappointed!

For our main meals, I savored the Duck Magret, a dry-rubbed duck breast with rosemary polenta, broccolini, and blueberry compote. My mom enjoyed one of the specials, which was a sea bass. Dessert was GRAFT’s coffee almond cake, which was amazing!

If you have ample time, make sure to stroll through the charming downtown area. Overall, Watkins Glen is famous for road racing, hosting the first-ever U.S. Grand Prix in 1961.

Day 2: Experience Seneca Lake’s Eastern Shore

Hector Falls along Seneca Lake in Upstate New York.

Fuel Up at The Elf in the Oak:

Breakfast at The Elf in the Oak on Seneca Lake's Eastern Shore.

Situated in an adorable house on the side of the main road in Burdett, The Elf in the Oak has the perfect casual breakfast along Seneca Lake’s Eastern Shore. It offers order-at-the-counter service and has indoor and outdoor seating. No matter where you choose to sit, you can enjoy lake views.

Overall, The Elf in the Oak is known for its breakfast sandwiches, coffee drinks, and laid-back vibes. For breakfast, my mom got the biscuit egg sandwich while I had the chicken and waffles. Everything was delicious!

Other popular items guests enjoy at The Elf in the Oak are the Reuben on rye bread and iced scones for breakfast; lobster rolls for lunch; and the “Elven Hour” for boozy deals in the afternoon.

Experience Seneca Lake by Boat:

A woman enjoying a boat day along Seneca Lake during a summer getaway.

A fun and unique experience while following a 4-day Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary is enjoying a scenic boat tour followed by wine and cheese near Hector Falls with Falling Waters Boat Tours.

This memorable boat tour begins at a private dock at Hector Point in Burdett. Owner Fred took us out onto the lake, where we cruised the East, West, and South shores. We witnessed spectacular waterfalls, gorgeous lakeside estates, rolling hillside vineyards, and the picturesque shale cliffs.

Afterward, Fred sailed us back to his house, which is right next to Hector Falls. He offered water shoes and the option to walk out next to the falls. (Please bring a swimsuit for this experience.) Next, we enjoyed a Finger Lakes glass of Riesling with some cheese. It was absolutely lovely!

Savor Lunch and a Tasting at Red Newt Cellars:

A woman wine tasting at Red Newt Cellars in Hector, along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

The first winery to visit on the east side of Seneca Lake is Red Newt Cellars in Hector. This lovely winery offers a welcoming tasting room and an outdoor terrace with great vineyard views.

Known for being a preeminent wine producer in the Finger Lakes, Red Newt Cellars was founded in 1998 by David and Debra Whiting. The winery currently produces around 20,000 cases, specializing in aromatic white wines.

My mom and I enjoyed a wine tasting, along with their delicious focaccia with olive tapenade and pita with hummus. We both loved their Riesling and Pinot Noir. They also offer an awesome grüner wine.

During our afternoon at Red Newt Cellars, we also toured the fermentation room and met the winemaker, who explained the production process.

Get a Taste of Sustainable Wine at Silver Thread Vineyard:

Wine from the sustainable Silver Thread Vineyard on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

What was once a former Austrian restaurant is now the sustainable Silver Thread Vineyard. It’s also located on the Eastern Shore in Lodi, NY.

Owned by acclaimed winemaker Paul Brock and his wife, wine educator Shannon Brock, Silver Thread Vineyard specializes in producing exceptional cool climate wines using regeneratively farmed grapes. The estate boasts a 100% solar-powered winery that has been operating since 2011 and offers wine tastings and food pairings at its on-site Winegarden as well as appointment-based tours in the vineyard. It’s one of the best places for wine enthusiasts to enjoy a relaxing and educational experience.

Because this scenic boutique winery practices a holistic approach to winemaking, using sustainable farming practices, it does not produce more than 3,000 cases per year.

My mom and I enjoyed their 2023 Good Earth Red Wine, which is a red blend, and the 2025 Petillant Naturel rosé.

Appreciate a Wine and Cheese Tasting at Leidenfrost Vineyards:

A wine and cheese plate from Leidenfrost Vineyards in Hector, NY.

The last winery to visit on the second day of your Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary is Leidenfrost Vineyards in Hector. It’s a small, family-owned farm-winery that was founded in 1990.

Overall, Leidenfrost Vineyards focuses on producing small-batch, handcrafted wines made with estate-grown grapes. Everything is produced using traditional methods and aged in French oak barrels.

During our afternoon at Leidenfrost Vineyards, my mom and I enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting while witnessing the scenic views of Seneca Lake. We both loved their red wines, but they also have amazing Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines.

Dine at Stonecat Café:

A catfish sandwich from the organic Stonecate Café in the Finger Lakes.

A wonderful restaurant to enjoy dinner on the Eastern Shore of Seneca Lake is Stonecat Café in Hector, New York.

This awesome farm-to-table restaurant uses local and organic ingredients and offers a whimsical, chef-inspired menu with something for everyone. In addition to cozy indoor dining, there is outdoor bar seating offering breathtaking views of Seneca Lake.

Stonecate Café has an à la carte experience. For dinner, I enjoyed a local’s favorite – the catfish sandwich, and my mom ordered the smoked Korean tofu entrée. For dessert, we shared the chocolate lava cake. Everything was delicious!

This regional café also hosts weekly events, including live music nights.

Day 3: Enjoy the Best of the Finger Lakes

A woman hiking in Watkins Glen State Park - one of the best things to do during a Seneca Lake summer trip.

Wake Up to Breakfast at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars:

A woman enjoying a lovely morning at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars.

On the third morning of your Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary, enjoy breakfast at the hotel. There is a lovely terrace presenting a welcoming atmosphere with great views.

As I mentioned above, the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars offers a complimentary Continental breakfast for its guests. You can enjoy coffee, tea, juices, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, pastries, cereal, and more.

Hike in Watkins Glen State Park:

Watkins Glen State Park at the southern tip of Seneca Lake.

Upstate New York is renowned for its unforgettable hiking trails. Undoubtedly, one of the best things to do during a summer escape to the Finger Lakes is a hike in the breathtaking Watkins Glen State Park.

Featuring a 400-foot-deep gorge and 19 waterfalls, you must enjoy the famous Gorge Trail. The Watkins Glen gorge was carved by Glen Creek thousands of years ago. As you make your way through the 2.3-mile Gorge Trail, you’ll come across picturesque stone steps, bridges, and tunnels, along with majestic waterfalls and a Cavern Cascade.

Since Watkins Glen is a New York State Park, you will need to pay $10 USD to park your vehicle. I suggest arriving early to avoid heavy crowds and wear good shoes since the trail can get slippery.

Overall, you will be amazed at the beauty of Watkins Glen State Park. There are a plethora of photogenic spots!

Visit Tabora Farm and Winery for Lunch:

A woman enjoying wine and lunch at Tabora Farm and Winery in Dundee, NY.

After enjoying a morning in Watkins Glen, head back to the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars. Freshen up before driving 5 minutes to Tabora Farm and Winery for lunch.

Named for owner Jane Eatherton’s childhood home in Cape Town, South Africa, Tabora Farm and Winery’s world-class wines reflect the style of the Finger Lakes region with distinctive inspiration from South Africa.

Jane and Roger Eatherton owned Tabora Farm and Orchard for 20 years in Bucks County, PA, before selling the business in 2009. They then moved up to the Finger Lakes and opened Tabora Vineyards, which is located on a 250-acre farm.

Nowadays, Tabora Farm and Winery in Dundee offers a deli, bakery, and market for both locals and visitors. They are famous for their pies, but you can also enjoy freshly brewed coffee, salads, soups, sandwiches, and specialty goods, from homemade sauces to baked goods.

When my mom and I had lunch at Tabora Farm and Winery, my mom got the egg salad sandwich, and I enjoyed the Caprese panini. Since this lovely market is known for its pies, I enjoyed the key lime pie for dessert. We also had a glass of their Baco noir, which was incredible!

Spend an Afternoon at Anthony Road Wine Company:

A woman enjoying an afternoon at Anthony Road Wine Company along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

Another wonderful winery that you must visit along the Western Shore of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is Anthony Road Wine Company. Located in Penn Yan, NY, Anthony Road is a family-run winery owned by Ann and John Martini. They moved to Seneca Lake in 1973 to grow grapes and opened up a wine company in 1990.

The Martini family is dedicated to growing and crafting fine wines, including award-winning Rieslings, with integrity and a sense of place. It’s a must to enjoy a wine tasting during your time at Anthony Road Wine Company. In addition to the Riesling, we also loved the Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio.

What I loved about this winery and vineyard is that it features a stunning garden to stroll through while you enjoy your wine. It was a lovely experience!

Tour and Taste at Fox Run Vineyards:

A woman enjoying a tour with wine at Fox Run Vineyards in the Finger Lakes.

The final winery we visited on the third day of our 4-day Seneca Lake Wine Trail itinerary was Fox Run Vineyards in Penn Yan. In fact, it’s only a two-minute drive north of Anthony Road Wine Company.

During our time at Fox Run Vineyards, my mom and I enjoyed a private wine tour of the beautiful vineyard, fermentation, and barrel room. Built upon a former Civil War-era dairy farm, Fox Run Vineyards’ original building still stands.

Owned by Scott and Ruth Osborn, the winery has remained a family-operated Seneca Lake landmark since 1994. Fox Run Vineyards takes a sustainable approach to winemaking, growing hybrid grape varieties and using solar power.

While we were at Fox Run Vineyards, my mom and I had the opportunity to meet the winemaker and taste Chardonnay straight from the fermentation tank. It was a lot of fun!

Have Dinner at Ports Café:

A delicious meal from Ports Café in Geneva, NY.

From Fox Run Vineyards, you’ll be ready for dinner. Located 25 minutes north of the winery is a local’s favorite – Ports Café. It’s in Geneva, on the northern tip of Seneca Lake.

What started as a small convenience store-turned-marketplace became the birthplace of Ports Café. Two Geneva natives used their resources to create a casual dinner spot that originally served hamburgers and hot dogs.

Over the years, Ports Café evolved into a Seneca Lake hotspot, serving fine dining and delicious wines. I loved the trendy vibes of this restaurant, and it also offered a lovely outdoor dining space.

While dining at Ports Café, my mom and I shared the clams as an appetizer, which were some of the best we’ve ever had! I got the yellowfin tuna for my main course, and my mom had the cod. For dessert, it was an amazing peanut butter fudge. Everything was delicious!

Day 4: Spend the Day in Geneva

Beautiful vineyards at Three Brothers Wineries & Estates along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

Start Your Day at Working Class Coffee:

Working Class Coffee in downtown Geneva, NY.

After checking out of the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars, drive a half-hour north to the small city of Geneva. Overall, Geneva, New York is historic for its Indigenous roots, being an 18th-century European settlement, and featuring beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture.

The first place to stop in Geneva is Working Class Coffee. With its original location in Canandaigua, it is “built on hard work, strong brews, and the belief that everyone deserves a good cup of coffee!” Working Class Coffee is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a community hub, a place to recharge, and a daily ritual for hardworking individuals!

During our morning at Working Class Coffee, I had a breakfast sandwich with one of their seasonal specialty beverages, a lemon bar iced coffee. My mom had the avocado toast with a regular hot coffee. Everything was terrific!

After breakfast, stroll through downtown Geneva. Check out the local boutiques, bookstores, wine shops, and the peaceful shoreline along Seneca Lake. As you make your way around Geneva, you may come across the stunning Belhurst Castle!

Conclude Your Seneca Lake Wine Trail Trip at Three Brothers:

A woman enjoying wine at Three Brothers Wineries & Estates on a summer day.

The final winery to visit during your four days along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is Three Brothers Wineries & Estates in Geneva. It features three wineries, a brewery, a café, and lodging.

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates boasts a fun atmosphere, offering something for everyone! When my mom and I first arrived, we enjoyed a tour of the wineries and brewery. Then, we appreciated a lovely tasting with the winemaker. I loved the rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and Meritage, which is a red blend.

If you like craft beer as I do, then you must grab a refreshing brew from War Horse Brewing Co. This fun brewery honors all of the warriors who fight for our freedom! From seasonal ales to cider and craft sodas, you will enjoy your drink surrounded by photos and memorabilia of those who have served.

We not only enjoyed the award-winning wines at Three Brothers Wineries & Estates, but we also savored a delicious lunch at Iron Heart Coffee Co. & Eatery. This casual café offers tasty bites that are perfect after a wine or beer tasting! I savored the beer bratwurst, and my mom got the pulled pork sandwich.

While you’re enjoying your wine at this fun property, you must check out the Louisiana-inspired bayou. It reminded me of my time in New Orleans!

After experiencing a lovely afternoon at Three Brothers Wineries & Estates, it’s time to head home!
