During February 2020, I traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam with a friend. We started our trip in Ho Chi Minh in Southern Vietnam and then took a short flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Our trip to Cambodia was quite magical as we got to stay in a tropical oasis at Sokkhak Boutique Resort; saw one of the most breathtaking sunrises at Angkor Wat temple; experienced a fun Valentine’s Day on Pub Street; tested our bargaining skills at the local markets; savored delicious Cambodian cuisine; immersed ourselves in the fascinating culture and visited other temples, ruins and historical sites.

The food and drinks at Sokkhak Boutique Resort are absolutely amazing!!! The resort’s chefs create a modern twist on the Cambodian classics their family members used to cook. You could either eat in the hotel’s dining room, poolside or in the comforts of your own room.

My absolute favorite dish served at the resort was the pineapple fried rice! I actually had this dish two days in a row for lunch when we hung out by the pool because it was amazing. I also loved their tropical fruity daiquiris and shakes. In addition, the breakfast at Sokkhak Boutique Resort was also great! It is a la carte and allows guests the option of choosing western classics such as eggs on toast, tropical fruit platters, freshly baked croissants or Cambodian favorites such as the traditional noodle soup (similar to pho) or Khmer waffles. For dinner, Sokkhak offers the delicious signature fish amok, noodle and rice dishes as well as fresh meat and vegetarian delights.

When my friend and I first arrived in Siem Reap, it was HOT (in the high 90s Fahrenheit). After checking into Sokkhak Boutique Resort, we saw how inviting the pool was, so we couldn’t wait to jump in, relax and fight off the jet lag since we had arrived in Southeast Asia only two days prior.

Participate in a Khmer Cooking Class:

One of the top experiences during a trip to Cambodia is taking a Khmer cooking class. Throughout the city of Siem Reap are a plethora of different cooking classes for you to get the most authentic Cambodian home cooking experience. Below are the top recommendations for a Khmer Cooking Class in Siem Reap:

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.
  • Countryside Cooking Class: Enjoy a Khmer style cooking class led by a local chef. In this four-hour cooking experience, you will head to the market before cooking your ingredients in a Cambodian kitchen.
  • Lily’s Secret Garden Cooking Class: Located in a Cambodian family home, chef Lily guides guests through signature dishes. This experience also includes going to the local market to get the ingredients.
  • Le Tigre de Papier Cooking School: Papa Tiger’s is one of Siem Reap’s longest-running cooking classes. It includes a trip to the Phsar Chaa Market in the center of Siem Reap and it is followed by a 2.5-hour lesson where you will cook an appetizer, main dish and dessert.
  • Champey Cooking Class: Another great Khmer cooking class option is Champey. This experience starts with a trip to the old market and it is followed by a three-course lesson. When the food is ready, guests will enjoy their dishes in tropical gardens. At the end of the class, everyone is given a box of spices, certificate and a Cambodian recipe book.

Have Fun on Pub Street and Visit the Night Markets:

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

You cannot visit Cambodia and miss out on the liveliness of Pub Street. This fun and dreamy street is located in the heart of Siem Reap’s town center and it features neon signs, stringed lights, beautiful decorations, fun bars, outdoor restaurants, street food, local shops, market stalls and so much more.

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

Our first night on Pub Street was actually Valentine’s Day. In fact, it was my second year celebrating Valentine’s Day on the other side of the world. (Last year, I celebrated love in the mountains of New Zealand.) I know that Valentine’s Day is mainly an American holiday, but it is cool to see people from other parts of the world celebrate all forms of love. The Valentine’s Day display on Pub Street was so dreamy as it featured lit up and decorative hearts and lanterns. At night, it was absolutely magical! What was also adorable was that there was a cover artist singing Celine Dion and Whitney Houston love songs.

During our time on Pub Street, we grabbed dinner and drinks at The One By T. It was a trendy and chic, two-story building that featured stylish décor and cool lighting. During our time there, we got to hear the cover singers and experience the bustling ambiance of Pub Street from our dinner table. We savored delicious spring rolls and I got the seafood hor fun, which was absolutely delicious! In addition, I enjoyed a Cambodian beer on the side called Tiger. (If you’ve been to Southeast Asia or Asia in general, each country has a signature beer. So far, I’ve had Chang in Thailand, Asahi in Japan, Bin Tang in Indonesia, Tiger in Cambodia and Larue in Vietnam.) Another great spot to visit near Pub Street is Miss Wong, which is a 1930’s Shanghai-inspired cocktail bar.

While we were downtown, we also visited some of the amazing night markets. The Cambodian markets are the best ways to find authentic souvenirs, elephant pants and apparel, jewelry, artwork and so much more. Just like at other markets in Southeast Asia, the markets in Siem Reap are great places to test your bartering skills. Located around the corner from Pub Street is the Noon Night Market that is fairly small, but still boasts over 100 stalls. Another great night market to check out downtown is the Siem Reap Art Center Night Market that is situated on the east bank of the Siem Reap River. It is at this market where you could find silk, local handicrafts, elephant clothing and cute purses. (You will see a lot of people wearing elephant apparel in both Cambodia, Thailand as well as other countries in Southeast Asia.)

Do a Magical Sunrise Tour of Angkor Wat:

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

On our second full day in Siem Reap, we got to see a huge bucket list landmark for the first time – Angkor Wat. We booked our sunrise tour through Sokkhak Boutique Resort, who organized a tuk tuk driver to take us around all morning to all of the Angkor temples and ruins in Siem Reap (for only $20 USD). We woke up at 4am to catch the sunrise there and it was one of the most magical mornings I’ve experienced during my travels.

Angkor Wat is a Hindu temple complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the largest religious monument on the planet, it’s featured on the Cambodian flag and it means “City of Temples” in Khmer. At one point in time, Angkor Wat was shared by two religions – both Hinduism and Buddhism and it has been destroyed during a war with Thailand.

The construction of Angkor Wat included 5 million tons of sandstone and it took 35 years, 300,000 laborers and 6,000 elephants to build. I highly recommend getting a private tour guide on site to take you around. It is the best way to learn about the history of Angkor Wat and the details that went into the construction. Another reason why it is great to hire a tour guide is because they will take you to all of the must-see spots at Angkor Wat and they will also find the best spots for you to take a photo. For two hours, our Angkor Wat tour guide cost $20 USD, which was totally worth it! He also took us around the Angkor Wat Market where I purchased a gorgeous painting of Angkor Wat by a local.

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

Please note that our tuk tuk tour did not include our actual ticket to Angkor Wat. Our driver took us to the ticket center where we purchased our tickets for $35 USD. You could pay either by cash (USD or Cambodian Riel) or credit card. Located in the ticket center is a little coffee stand where you could pick up coffee/tea or a snack before you head to the temple complex.

Wander through Siem Reap’s Temples and Ruins:

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

Also included on our tuk tuk tour were the Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm Temple (as well as a few ruins in between.) After spending 2.5 hours at Angkor Wat, our tuk tuk driver took us to his favorite breakfast spot located a few minutes from the complex. It was called Neary Khmer Angkor Restaurant and I got a refreshing coconut and banana fritters for breakfast. It was absolutely delicious!

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.

After breakfast, our tuk tuk driver took us to the beautiful Bayon Temple. This amazing temple was built in the late 12th Century by King Jayavarman VII and it is a Buddhist temple incorporating elements of Hindu cosmology. An interesting fact about Bayon Temple is that it stands in the center of Angkor Thom, which was built as a square where the sides run exactly from north to south and east to west. One of my favorite aspects of Bayon Temple was the huge stone faces of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara as well as the many details and carvings that are located on the walls of the building.

When we were finished walking around Bayon Temple complex, we made our way to Ta Prohm Temple, which means “Tomb Raider Temple”. Known as the most atmospheric ruin in the Angkor Archaeological Park, Ta Prohm is surrounded by jungle and featured crumbling towers and walls. Only the largest trees are left in place and overall, Ta Prohm reminds everyone of the power and magic of the jungle.

After spending the entire morning exploring the wonders of Siem Reap’s temples, it was a treat coming back to Sokkhak Boutique Resort and enjoying a relaxing afternoon by the pool. On our last day in Siem Reap, we enjoyed breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant. I had a delicious Cambodian noodle soup with chicken (soup is common to eat for breakfast in Asia). This type of noodle soup is very similar to Vietnamese pho, except the rice noodles are a little thinner. We also had a tropical fruit juice and coffee on the side. It was absolutely delicious and I love how peaceful the ambiance was in the restaurant.

During our last day, we took a tuk tuk back to Pub Street and the downtown area where we walked around the Psar Chaa Old Market for souvenirs, clothes and accessories. Known as the oldest market in Siem Reap, Psar Chaa is where the locals will head to early in the morning to shop for fresh produce, seafood, meat and household items. It is definitely a place you cannot miss out on when you visit Siem Reap.

After walking around town, we were so hot and couldn’t wait to grab fried roll ice cream. If you read my blog post on Chiang Mai, Thailand, you saw that I tried fried roll ice cream there for the first time and I fell in love with it. I absolutely love the concept of fried roll ice cream and I enjoy watching it being made. It is made using milk, cream as well as sugar and other ingredients such as fruit, chocolate and syrups to increase the flavor. The liquid mixture is stirred to incorporate air space on an ice pan and then it is rolled up. They are then placed into a cup and you could add various toppings. I savored a delicious strawberry and Nutella cup and it definitely hit the spot!

See an Apsara Dance Show:

Apsara Dance is a classical Khmer performance that is inspired by the water and cloud spirit of Hindu and Buddhist mythology. It is popular to see an Apsara performance in Siem Reap as well as in the capital of Cambodia – Phnom Penh. During a performance, you could see the dancers wear gorgeous and detailed traditional dresses, ornate headdresses and gilded jewelry. The graceful moves are inspired by those illustrated on the walls of Angkor Wat and other temples in and around Siem Reap. Some of the popular places to see an Apsara performance in Siem Reap are at Apsara Terrace, Apsara Theater & Restaurant and Koulen Restaurant. (Sokkhak Boutique Resort could organize a dance show reservation for you.)

The pool at Sokkhak is absolutely beautiful and I loved how it was filled with saltwater instead of chlorine.

Also included on our tuk tuk tour were the Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm Temple (as well as a few ruins in between.) After spending 2.5 hours at Angkor Wat, our tuk tuk driver took us to his favorite breakfast spot located a few minutes from the complex. It was called Neary Khmer Angkor Restaurant and I got a refreshing coconut and banana fritters for breakfast. It was absolutely delicious!

Have Breakfast at Sokkhak:

A 3-day itinerary for Siem Reap, Cambodia. Discover everything to do in Siem Reap.
