Did you know that prior to my 20s, I didn’t even own a passport?

I did not come from an immediate family of globetrotters, so it wasn’t until my junior year of college when I was 20 years old that I decided to do a study abroad program in Spain that introduced me to the world and sparked my wanderlust.

My second big international trip wasn’t until I turned 25 where I took a group trip to the Greek Islands. Ever since that trip to Greece, I’ve been hooked on travel and have been avidly exploring the world throughout my mid and late 20s.

As I write this blog post, I am about to approach my 29th year on this planet and I couldn’t wait to put together a guide on the best 20 trips to take in your 20s.

A happy woman standing in front of the gum wall in Seattle.

I am a firm believer that you could become a world traveler at any age, but I do find that your 20s are the perfect time to start getting out in the world because you have more freedom than you did in your teens, you now have an income flow, you’re an adult and could make your own decisions, you are on your way to finding yourself and you are still learning.

I believe that traveling the world changes a person. Travel opens up your eyes to different cultures and lifestyles; it allows you to tune into yourself; you develop a new sense of empathy for others; lifelong friendships are made; you become more independent and your knowledge expands.

Travel changes people in the best ways possible! There is something truly special about getting out of your bubble and seeing all that the world offers outside of your hometown.

20 Epic Trips to Take in Your 20s

Study Abroad or Foreign Exchange:

A group of women studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain

Like I mention above, the travel bug bit me during a study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain during early summer 2012.

I was 20 years old and it was my very first time outside of the United States. It was also the first time I took a flight by myself!

Most colleges and universities worldwide offer a study abroad or foreign exchange program that allows students to experience life in a different country.

If you are a college student, someone who is entering university or have a son or daughter that is pursuing a higher-level education, I highly recommend looking into a program that will allow you or your child to study and live abroad.

Anyone that lives abroad will gain independence, be introduced to a brand-new way of life, gain knowledge beyond the textbook and meet great individuals.

Now, if you have already completed your studies and aren’t looking to go back to school, but want to experience living abroad, I recommend looking into a job that allows you to work abroad.

Go Abroad offers study abroad and volunteer programs; internships; language courses and teaching jobs; online corporate, agency, freelance and temp work, plus so much more!

Sail Around the Greek Islands:

A woman enjoying her time on a boat in the Greek Islands

One of the top 20 trips to take in your 20s is a boat trip around the Greek Islands.

Like I mention above, I sailed around the Greek Islands of Santorini, Paros and Mykonos from Athens and it was one of the most memorable trips I took. The Yacht Week offers great trips for 20-somethings within the Mediterranean region and beyond.

What is great about traveling to the Greek Islands during your 20s is that there is something for everyone to enjoy: natural beauty, stunning architecture, fun parties, great food and wine, friendly locals, amazing weather, epic water activities and so much more!

If there is one thing I could assure you is that every day is a happy day in Greece.

Road Trip:

A woman on top of a Jeep during a road trip in Colorado

Another one of the top 20 trips to take in your 20s is a good ole’ road trip!

Whether you are doing a big U.S. road trip, a statewide road trip, a road trip across Europe or even a South America road trip, there is nothing better than jamming out to a playlist, admiring nature and making random pit stops to grab local food and take some photos.

So far, I have done a few smaller road trips during my 20s such as a road trip with friends around the South Coast of Iceland; a road trip around the coast of Southern California with family; a road trip through the state of Colorado with girlfriends and a road trip on the island of Sicily with two guy friends. I have even done an East Coast road trip with my family when I was a preteen and mini road trips within the Northeast of the United States.

(Right after my 29th birthday, I did an amazing American Southwest road trip as well as a Pacific Northwest road trip. I also did a road trip through Montana, Wyoming and Colorado in September 2020.)

Backpack around Southeast Asia:

A woman enjoying her time in Southeast Asia

A popular journey to take in your 20s is a backpacking trip through Southeast Asia.

Overall, Southeast Asian countries offer a fascinating culture, are affordable and super safe for travelers!

It is also perfect for solo adventurers as well and there are a plethora of different hostels to stay at. Staying at a hostel during a travel experience in your 20s is the best way to meet friends if you’re solo traveling or even if you’re adventuring with another person.

The Southeast Asian destinations I have visited during my 20s that I highly recommend you make your way to are Thailand, Bali, Vietnam and Cambodia.

During your time in Thailand, the best places to experience are Bangkok for the Grand Palace and temples; Chiang Mai to see the elephants; Pai for a full moon party along with Phi Phi Islands and Krabi for the beach and nightlife.

Bali, Indonesia is one of my other recommended top 20 trips to take in your 20s as it offers beautiful temples and culture, cool bars, dreamy cafés along with stunning beaches.

In Vietnam, I recommend checking out Ho Chi Minh for Vietnam War history; Da Nang for temples; Hoi An for the dreamy lanterns; Cat Ba Island for the beach and Hanoi for food and nightlife.

Lastly, you also have to make your way to Siem Reap, Cambodia to experience the fascinating history of Angkor Wat Archaeological Park, party on Pub Street, savor delicious food and explore by tuk tuk.

Attend a Festival or Event:

Your 20s are your prime years to be selfish and have fun!

There are plenty of amazing festivals and fun events that happen annually around the world. I will admit that I haven’t been to too many festivals, but below is a list some great ones that you will totally enjoy during your 20s:

Visit a National Park:

A woman enjoying her time at Yoho National Park in British Columbia, Canada

You cannot go through your 20s without visiting at least one National Park.

The United States is known for its National Parks like Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Zion, Acadia and more. What a lot of people don’t realize is that you could also visit breathtaking National Parks outside of the USA too!

Below is a list of the National Parks I’ve visited during my 20s:

USA: Rocky Mountain National Park and Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, Wenatchee National Forest in Washington, Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland, Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park in Utah, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Redwood National and State Parks in California, Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon, Glacier National Park in Montana, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming

Canada: Banff National Park in Alberta and Yoho National Park in British Columbia

Spain: Picos de Europa National Park

Iceland: Thingvellir National Park

Italy: Bellunesi Dolomites National Park, Cinque Terre National Park and Etna National Park

Ireland: Killarney National Park

South Africa: Table Mountain National Park

New Zealand: Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and Fiordland National Park

Belize: Blue Hole National Park

Scotland: The Trossachs National Park

Vietnam: Cat Ba National Park

Go on a Big Euro Trip:

A woman on the Pont Alexander in Paris

One of the top 20 trips to take in your 20s is a big Europe trip!

Personally, I believe that European countries are great destinations for newer travelers. There are a lot of iconic monuments and historical landmarks, a great foodie and nightlife culture, a plethora of fun adventures and so much more!

My first Euro trip was when I studied abroad in Spain and then made my way to Portugal.

Whether you are looking to backpack around Europe for a few months or go on a one or two-week trip, there are so many great countries and cities to check out.

Below are popular destinations to visit when you first venture to Europe:

Solo Travel:

A woman hiking Rainbow Mountain in Peru

Another memorable experience that you shouldn’t miss out on in your 20s is doing a solo trip.

My first ever solo trip was to the European Christmas markets in Bavaria, Austria, Budapest and Bratislava in December 2018.

I will admit that during my first day exploring the city of Munich in Bavaria, Germany by myself was a little nerve wracking, but that completely changed by the end of the week.

I am now addicted to solo traveling and it is so nice to not have to worry about finding someone else to take the trip of your dreams with you.

Overall, solo travel changed my life! It made me more confident and independent. Solo travel also taught me how to be happy alone and it’s such a liberating feeling knowing that you could do whatever you want on your own terms.

Some of the best places to travel solo are Austin, Texas in North America; Germany in Europe; Cusco, Peru in South America; Japan in Asia; Cape Town, South Africa in Africa and the South Island of New Zealand in Oceania.

Even though what I mention above are all based from my own travel experiences, there are still so many great destinations to explore by yourself.

Enjoy the Magic at a European Christmas Market:

A woman having fun at the Christmas markets in Bratislava, Slovakia

Speaking of the Christmas markets, I believe that one of the top 20 trips to take in your 20s is a trip to Europe in December to experience the magic of Advent season.

There really is nothing more joyful that wandering through a beautiful city center that is filled with festive wooden stalls that offer mulled wine, chimney cakes, smoked sausages and artisanal décor.

Every year, I do a European Christmas market trip on my own and each city offers something special in its own way. Below are the two Christmas market trips I have done so far:

December 2018:

Munich, Bavaria, Germany (with a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle); Salzburg, Austria (with a day trip to Hallstatt); Budapest, Hungary; Bratislava, Slovakia and Vienna, Austria

December 2019:

Krakow, Poland; Prague, Czechia; Česky Krumlov, Czechia; Nuremberg, Germany; Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany; Frankfurt, Germany and Cologne, Germany

For my next Christmas market trip, I plan to visit the Eastern European Christmas markets in the Baltic countries.

Tour a Wine Region:

A woman enjoying the wineries near Cape Town, South Africa

For all of my fellow wine lovers out there, you know just as well as I do that there is nothing like dressing up, getting a group of friends together and spending a beautiful day at a vineyard sipping wine in the sun and listening to live music.

Now, wine tasting globally is even more of a treat!

As I approach my last year of my 20s, I am proud to say that I have been to over 50 wineries and vineyards around the world. I started going wine tasting at the age of 21 during my senior year in college because I went to school in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley wine region.

Since then, I have been exploring wineries in my local area, around the United States and throughout the world. Not only is the Shenandoah Valley and Hudson Valley in New York my favorite regions to go wine tasting, I also loved visiting wineries and vineyards in New England, California, Italy, France, Greece, South Africa, New Zealand and Morocco!

I cannot wait to visit more wineries in the future.

Participate in a Life Changing Trek:

A woman doing the Salkantay Trek in Peru

Out of all of these top 20 trips to take in your 20s, the most life changing thing you’ll do is a trek!

For my 28th birthday trip a year ago, I did the Salkantay Trek in Peru to Machu Picchu and it was one of the most challenging, but rewarding experiences.

A few weeks later, I got invited to do the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in the Galicia region of Northern Spain. Within a two-week time frame, I walked over 100 miles and both experiences opened my eyes to the strength I have within.

In the future, I would like to do the trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal as well as Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!

I also would love to hike the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail here in the United States.

Travel to an Instagrammable Location:

A happy woman enjoying an Instagrammable spot in Tulum

In the age of social media, there are so many “Instagrammable” hot spots around the world.

If you have an Instagram account, some of the best trips to take in your 20s to fulfill your photography dreams are Tulum, Mexico and Bali, Indonesia. Both locations feature adorable cafés and restaurants, stunning boutique hotels and villas, beautiful nature and so much more.

Explore Iceland:

A woman enjoying a morning at The Blue Lagoon in Iceland

Iceland is total goals for any adventure lover!

The land of fire and ice is filled with natural jewels that feature picturesque waterfalls, enchanting mountains, rolling hills, fairytale horses, breathtaking coastlines and so much more!

Iceland was one of my first international destinations in my 20s and I did a budget road trip through the southern coast with friends, which was definitely one for the books.

Please do not miss out on discovering Iceland if you have the opportunity to go there during your 20s.

Do an Authentic Winter Trip:

Two women sleigh riding with huskies in Finland

Another bucket list item to add to your 20 trips to take in your 20s bucket list is an authentic winter trip… yes, I’m talking about snow and cold weather!

In December 2017, I did a memorable winter trip to Finland through Crawford Concierge where we did two different sleigh riding adventures, one with reindeer and the other with Siberian huskies; ate dinner in an igloo; saw the Northern Lights; did an Arctic spa experience and many more.

In addition to my trip to Finland, I also did two separate winter getaways to Québec City and Montréal in the Québec province of Canada where I visited an ice hotel, did a maple tasting and so much more.

I have also done countless ski trips and the most recent one I did was to the Italian Dolomites in January 2020.

Whether you are a winter sports lover or you simply want to experience a winter wonderland, there are plenty of places in the world for you to have fun and create lifelong memories.

Have an All Girls Weekend Getaway in the USA:

Two women having fun in Denver, Colorado

Girl trips are so much fun! You cannot go through your 20s and not do at least one girls getaway.

The United States features plenty of wonderful cities and destinations for you to enjoy with your girl tribe!

Whether you are traveling with your besties, attending a bachelorette or spending time with the females in your family, below are the best cities and destinations to visit for a fun girls’ weekend getaway:

Discover Our Underwater World:

A woman snorkeling in Belize

A top activity you certainly cannot miss out on during your 20s is exploring our underwater world.

Whether you scuba dive or snorkel (please note that you need to be PADI certified to go scuba diving), there is a whole new world to explore in our oceans.

One of the top areas of the world to see our amazing sea life is in the Caribbean.

Last summer, during August 2019, I went to Belize where I got to swim with sharks, barracudas, tarpons, colorful fish and so much more! I also swam around beautiful coral and the water was a sparkling clear blue.

Wander through one of the World’s Largest Cities:

A woman amazed at the beauty in Grand Central Terminal in NYC

There are a lot of fascinating cities on this planet and many of them make for perfect trips to take in your 20s.

Below are the top big cities I visited and loved throughout the past decade:

Drive the California Coast:

A woman admiring the sunset in San Diego, California

One of the most beautiful coastlines in the world is located in the state of California.

Between all of the breathtaking cliffside views, rocky and white sand shoreline, tall palm trees, amazing restaurants and wonderful cities and towns, you totally cannot miss out on cruising along the California coast during your 20s.

Below are a list of beautiful cities to check out during your road trip:

  • San Diego
  • Laguna Beach
  • Los Angeles
  • Santa Monica
  • Malibu
  • Santa Barbara
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea
  • Big Sur
  • San Francisco
  • Point Reyes National Seashore
  • Redwood National and State Parks

Adventure through Australia and/or New Zealand:

A woman enjoying the beautiful views in New Zealand

One of the best trips to take in your 20s is an adventure filled trip to either Australia or New Zealand (or both).

During February 2019, I did a memorable solo trip to New Zealand where I went paragliding, luging, jet boating, hiking, wine tasting and so much more!

Both countries offer a good mix of mountains, beach, desert, cities, great food and adventure.

Take in Everything Your Home State or Country Offers:

A woman in front of a beautiful house in New Zealand

A treasuring thing to do during your 20s is to truly explore your home state or country. You will be surprised by how many wonderful gems there are right in your own backyard.

I didn’t start exploring my home state of New Jersey until after I graduated college at the age of 22. I started hiking different trails in the area; checked out different local restaurants, wineries and breweries; explored new beach towns and even wandered through different residential towns and small cities.

I discovered solo travel in my 20s, too, and have never looked back. It really shapes you and what you gain as a person….there is nothing else like it. And a good road trip is always incredible regardless the age as I find that travel keeps you feeling young as you explore and discover.

Yes of course! All of these trips are perfect for all ages. 🙂 Also I started solo traveling at 27, but wish I started sooner.

There is still so much I haven’t done in my 20s, focused too much on studying and working. Now I realize I will be working until 70, so might as well have taken a gap year 🙂

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:40 am

Haha I feel you! I wish I started traveling in my earlier 20s, but I had it in my head that I needed to jumpstart my corporate career and do societal things…

  27. Iulia on June 21, 2020 at 4:15 am

Wow, I love all your trip ideas! And I feel excited that I got to do most of these during my 20s! But I will continue in my 30s with the ones I missed! :)) Thanks for sharing, Great resource!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:43 am

Thank you so much Iulia! Yes, I still have so much to do in my 30s too. 🙂

  28. Bettina on June 21, 2020 at 6:55 am

Love this post and totally agree with all of them! I have done quite a few of these but yet have to sail around Greek islands. It’s a dream of mine!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:44 am

Thank you so much Bettina! You would love Greece. I totally want to get back and experience it in a non party way lol

  29. Courtney in the Middle Seat on June 21, 2020 at 9:30 am

Taylor, what a fun round-up! I hope these suggestions still work for my 30s & 40s! 🤣 I actually also didn’t have a passport until my junior year of college for study abroad either, and I completely relate to your sentiment about suddenly getting bitten by the travel bug. My wife & I were hoping to go to visit Greek islands this year, but now it’s a 2021 dream. Christmas Markets are also high on our list! Another thought I have: a lot of travels in my twenties were also about the people you meet and the friends you reunite with! On my trips in my 20s, and now in my 30s, I love being able to visit friends and family in places around the world and truly explore their hometowns (or major cities!) as a tourist, too. My college friends and I have been rotating whose home we visit, and we always get to learn new things and see new places. Looking forward to reading where you are visit next!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:46 am

Thank you Courtney and of course they still apply for your 30s, 40s and beyond! 🙂 Ah yes, friendships are key in travel. I have met my tribe through traveling the world. 🙂

  30. Nicola Lavin on June 21, 2020 at 10:13 am

An amazing guide. So many wonderful places to visit. I am the opposite to you. I had a baby when I was 23 so I’m finding that it is now that I am 40 that I am getting to explore without responsibilities at home.

  31. Cristina on June 22, 2020 at 4:09 am

This is a great blog post 🙂 I still need to visit many of these places. Especially, I can’t wait to visit Southeast Asia. I hope I can do my trip next year. I plan to visit Singapore and Bali. Thank you for sharing this! I will refer to your blog for future trips.

    • Taylor Deer on June 22, 2020 at 9:51 am

Thank you so much Cristina! Yes, you totally have to go to Southeast Asia! Bali is amazing. I still need to get to Singapore. 🙂

  32. Brittany Sneller on June 23, 2020 at 10:11 am

So many memorable trips! Like many others, I love watching you explore travel. We are pretty fortunate to have traveled so far and wide at such a young age! I’ll always cherish the places I’ve been & lived in. Loved this guide!

    • Taylor Deer on June 23, 2020 at 10:31 am

Thank you so much Bri! Yes, you guys have gone on some epic adventures and you’ve inspired me to see more of Mexico. 🙂

A woman enjoying a beverage on a rooftop in Tulum, Mexico

I love this article! I studied abroad for a little bit in University, and then kicked off my career back home. After that I travelled to London to live and work for a bit in my 20s and had a blast going to Europe on the weekends, and fitting as much travel in as possible. I definitely would recommend getting lots of travel into your 20s.

I am fortunate to have grown up travelling, but would love to delve into doing some solo trips now 🙂 I did a study abroad exchange in Vienna 3 years ago and it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Could not recommend exchanges enough so I love that you mentioned it!

  15. April on June 20, 2020 at 7:46 am

I discovered solo travel in my 20s, too, and have never looked back. It really shapes you and what you gain as a person….there is nothing else like it. And a good road trip is always incredible regardless the age as I find that travel keeps you feeling young as you explore and discover.

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:30 am

Yes of course! All of these trips are perfect for all ages. 🙂 Also I started solo traveling at 27, but wish I started sooner.

  16. Maggie on June 20, 2020 at 9:02 am

What a fun article! I’m in my 20s and happy I’ve done at least some of these! Fortunately, there’s no age limit on travel, so I hopefully have awhile to check the rest off lol

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:31 am

Yes, definitely! All of these trips are perfect for all ages and I still have so much to check off going into my 30s too. 🙂

  17. Léa on June 20, 2020 at 9:43 am

Those are clearly amazing recs Taylor! I must say I’m not far from ticking all of them off, except solo travel maybe.. Just not something I am very attracted to, at least for the moment! But let’s see, I have 6 years left before reaching 30! Thanls for sharing anyway.

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:32 am

Thank you so much Lea and that is amazing! I still have so much more to see and experience. 🙂

  18. Nicky on June 20, 2020 at 10:42 am

This is a great list!! I’m not in my twenties anymore (cry), but I’m not going to let that stop me! We’re as old as we feel, right? 😛 I’ll definitely be adding some of these on to my bucket list; thank you so much for sharing!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:32 am

Thank you Nicky and yes, all of these experiences are perfect for all ages! I still have so much to see and experience in my late 20s and going into my 30s. 🙂

You have so many incredible trip ideas on here! I love Christmas Markets, definitely there are a few I still want to visit. Some of these are still on my bucketlist, especially Peru and hiking to Machu Picchu. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much Brianna and yes, I am making my Christmas market trip an annual thing. 🙂

Lots of great destinations for any age. I was also not raised in a traveling family but got the bug just out of high school. You’ve been blessed to travel the world. I’m sure it has widened your views on life. I encourage anyone to travel as much as they can. It really does help to give us a more inclusive world view. Thanks for sharing!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:36 am

Yes, I totally agree Nancy! Also, yes, I’m so grateful I was able to make it work and start avidly traveling by my mid 20s. 🙂

  21. LAUREN BETH MONITZ on June 20, 2020 at 1:20 pm

What a great list! I’ve still yet to do some of these, but I’ll see them in my thirties, turning 30 this fall!

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:37 am

Thank you Jackie and yes, this is perfect for those in their 30s too. I still have so much more to experience!

  23. Michelle on June 20, 2020 at 2:45 pm

Well, I’m not in my 20s any longer, but I am still adding some of these to my list :). I am glad to say I have done so many of these. Great post!!

I love this Taylor! Glad you are able to take so many trips in your 20s. Wish I did that too but it’s never too late 🙂

Thank you Aswani and yes, it really is never too late. 🙂

  25. Elena Pappalardo on June 20, 2020 at 3:27 pm

What a fantastic round-up post with so many dreamy places, Taylor! Even though I’m in my 30’s I’m definitely looking to add these to my list! Love your photos as always 🙂

    • Taylor Deer on June 21, 2020 at 9:41 am

Thank you so much Elena and yes, these are all perfect trips for those 30 and beyond too. 🙂

  26. Lena on June 20, 2020 at 6:07 pm
